Book Unsteady Loads on Hydrofoils Including Free Surface Effects and Cavitation

Download or read book Unsteady Loads on Hydrofoils Including Free Surface Effects and Cavitation written by Sheila Evans Widnall and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linearized three-dimensional lifting surface theory is applied to a variety of problems of interest in hydrofoil application. The resulting integral equations are solved by numerical techniques on a high-speed digital computor to predict steady and oscillatory loads. The following cases are discussed: thin non-planar hydrofoils at infinite Froude number, the effect of gravity waves on the forces on an oscillating hydrofoil near the free surface, supercavitating hydrofoils of finite span in steady and oscillatory motion. Numerical results for lift and moment are presented and comparison with experiment is made whenever possible. Results of these calculations indicate that this numerical solution is a very practical and efficient way to obtain accurate prediction of unsteady loads for flutter calculations. (Author).

Book Hydroelasticity with Special Reference to Hydrofoil Craft

Download or read book Hydroelasticity with Special Reference to Hydrofoil Craft written by H. Norman Abramson and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monograph presents a comprehensive view of hydrofoil hydroelasticity. The field of unsteady hydrodynamics is reviewed for the subcavitating, cavitating, and ventilated flow regimes. Theoretical and experimental results for hydrofoil flutter and divergence are reviewed. The effects of the hydrodynamic and structural parameters in hydroelastic problems are discussed. An extensive bibliography is presented. (Author).

Book The Unsteady Hydrodynamics and Control of Hydrofoils Near a Free Surface

Download or read book The Unsteady Hydrodynamics and Control of Hydrofoils Near a Free Surface written by Joseph I. Smullin and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A discussion is given of the development of a digital computer program to compute hydrofoil loads and some aspect of hydrofoil control. The program computes the lift, pitching moment, and flap hinge moment on a two-dimensional hydrofoil with a trailing edge flap operating near a free surface with waves. The computational approach involves the numerical solution of an integral equation relating an upwash distribution to a kernel function and pressure distribution. The pressure distribution is expanded in a truncated Glauert series; the integration is carried out numerically using a Gaussian quadrature; and the coefficients of the Glauert series are evaluated by a minimum error collocation method. The control problem investigated involves the positioning of a pivoted hydrofoil by means of a servo-controlled trim tab. When the foil is pivoted at its quarter chord point and control is implemented solely by means of a servo tab, the system is virtually uncontrollable. However, by pivoting the foil off the quarter chord point or by augmenting the servo tab with a servo attached directly to the foil, the system can be controlled. (Author).

Book A Nonlinear Theory for Fully Cavitating Flows Past an Inclined Flat Plate

Download or read book A Nonlinear Theory for Fully Cavitating Flows Past an Inclined Flat Plate written by Stanford University. Department of Civil Engineering and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work considers a three-part sequence of problems in fully-cavitating flow theory which have practical applications in the design of hydrofoil vessels. In each problem a two-dimensional, inviscid, incompressible, irrotational flow is assumed. Results in each case include expressions for the physical-plane configuration and the lift and drag coefficients; they are developed by using conformal mapping and the solution to a Riemann-Hilbert mixed-boundary-value problem in an auxiliary half plane. The first part develops a nonlinear solution for a flat plate in an infinite flow field with gravity neglected. The remaining two parts are extensions of part one to consider in one case the effect of a free surface above the hydrofoil, and in the other case, the effect of a transverse gravity field on the initial problem. The use of a digital computer to perform numerical integrations is a feature common to the solution of all three problems. The solution to the gravity-affected case was found from the nongravity solution via a rapidly convergent iteration process. The results in each case agree well with other nonlinear and linear solutions. (Author).
