Book A Short Guide to Risk Appetite

Download or read book A Short Guide to Risk Appetite written by David Hillson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How much risk should we take? A Short Guide to Risk Appetite sets out to help all those who need to decide how much risk can be taken in a particular risky and important situation. David Hillson and Ruth Murray-Webster introduce the RARA Model to explain the complementary and central roles of Risk Appetite and Risk Attitude, and along the way they show how other risk-related concepts fit in. Risk thresholds are the external expression of inherent risk appetite, and the challenge is how to set the right thresholds. By progressively deconstructing the RARA Model, the authors show that the essential control step is our ability to choose an appropriate risk attitude. The book contains practical guidance to setting risk thresholds that take proper account of the influences of organisational risk culture and the individual risk preferences of key stakeholders. Alongside this, individuals and organisations need to choose the risk attitude that will optimise their chances of achieving the desired objectives.

Book Untangling the US Deficit

Download or read book Untangling the US Deficit written by Richard A. Iley and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book would be a good companion text for an undergraduate class in international finance or open-economy macroeconomics. Catherine L. Mann, Journal of Economic Literature Untangling the US Deficit is a unique and well-researched book and will be of great interest to academic economists and postgraduates. Policymakers, business and market economists will also find it an enlightening and challenging analysis. sirreadalot.org The book is written in a very accessible fashion, even though the authors strive to accommodate competing and complex views on the causes and cures of the US external deficit, which makes for enjoyable and informative reading. Their reliance on data, charts and bibliography result in persuasive arguments. Recommended. General readers; upper-division undergraduates through practitioners. A. Sharma, Choice What are the causes of the US current account deficit? Are the problems made in the US or the rest of the world? Are these deficits sustainable, at what level? These are the types of questions the authors set out to answer, and in essence conclude that the answers do not matter for global stability as long as imbalances are left to market forces and the US can avoid large net income outflows. The beauty of this book, however, is watching the authors (the unusual combination of a business economist and an academic economist) arrive at this conclusion. They provide insights that can come only from years of practical and theoretical experience. William E. Becker, Indiana University Bloomington, US As the US current account deficit has expanded to a record level of $811 billion in 2006, debate about the deficit s causes and consequences has also grown. Is the deficit a product of American profligacy or a glut of savings in the rest of the world? Is it a serious problem or essentially benign? Untangling the US Deficit charts a course between the competing explanations in a systematic and rigorous approach, incorporating the latest academic research and market data. Particular attention is given to the China United States trade imbalance and to the special role of the US dollar and US capital markets in global finance. This unique and well-researched book will be of great interest to academic economists and postgraduates. Policy-makers, business and market economists will also find it to be an enlightening and challenging account.

Download or read book Regulating From the Inside written by Iris H-Y Chiu and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-05 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines a key aspect of the post-financial crisis reform package in the EU and UK-the ratcheting up of internal control in banks and financial institutions. The legal framework for internal controls is an important part of prudential regulation, and internal control also constitutes a form of internal gate-keeping for financial firms so that compliance with laws and regulations can be secured. This book argues that the legal framework for internal control, which is a form of meta-regulation, is susceptible to weaknesses, and such weaknesses are critically examined by adopting an interdisciplinary approach. The book discusses whether post-crisis reforms adequately address the weaknesses in regulating internal control and proposes an alternative strategy to enhance the 'governance' effectiveness of internal control.

Book Rethinking Urban Risk and Resettlement in the Global South

Download or read book Rethinking Urban Risk and Resettlement in the Global South written by Cassidy Johnson and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2021-06-10 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental changes have significant impacts on people’s lives and livelihoods, particularly the urban poor and those living in informal settlements. In an effort to reduce urban residents’ exposure to climate change and hazards such as natural disasters, resettlement programmes are becoming widespread across the Global South. While resettlement may reduce a region’s future climate-related disaster risk, it often increases poverty and vulnerability, and can be used as a reason to evict people from areas undergoing redevelopment. A collaboration between the Bartlett Development Planning Unit at UCL, the Indian Institute for Human Settlements and the Latin American Social Science Faculty, Rethinking Urban Risk and Resettlement in the Global South collates the findings from 'Reducing Relocation Risks', a research project that studied urban areas across India, Uganda, Peru, Colombia and Mexico. The findings are augmented with chapters by researchers with many years of insight into resettlement, property rights and evictions, who offer cases from Monserrat, Cambodia, Philippines and elsewhere. The contributors collectively argue that the processes for making and implementing decisions play a large part in determining whether outcomes are socially just, and examine various value systems and strategies adopted by individuals versus authorities. Considering perceptions of risk, the volume offers a unique way to think about economic assessments in the context of resettlement and draws parallels between different country contexts to compare fully urbanised areas with those experiencing urban growth. It also provides an opportunity to re-think how disaster risk management can better address the accumulation of urban risks through urban planning.

Many recount the moment we rose up from the ashes and started anew. Others tell of the day we built a wall to keep them out. For some, they're nothing more than the vestiges left behind-a simple name carved into the knotty bark of a Juniper tree. My story begins with a boy. A mute, from the other side of the wall, known only as Six, who touched my heart in ways that words never could, and gave me the courage to face my darkest truth. Book excerpt: Longlisted for the FT/McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award A groundbreaking chronicle of the birth--and death--of a pair of jeans, that exposes the fractures in our global supply chains, and our relationships to each other, ourselves, and the planet Take a look at your favorite pair of jeans. Maybe you bought them on Amazon or the Gap; maybe the tag says "Made in Bangladesh" or "Made in Sri Lanka." But do you know where they really came from, how many thousands of miles they crossed, or the number of hands who picked, spun, wove, dyed, packaged, shipped, and sold them to get to you? The fashion industry operates with radical opacity, and it's only getting worse to disguise countless environmental and labor abuses. It epitomizes the ravages inherent in the global economy, and all in the name of ensuring that we keep buying more while thinking less about its real cost. In Unraveled, entrepreneur, researcher, and advocate Maxine Bédat follows the life of an American icon--a pair of jeans--to reveal what really happens to give us our clothes. We visit a Texas cotton farm figuring out how to thrive without relying on fertilizers that poison the earth. Inside dyeing and weaving factories in China, where chemicals that are banned in the West slosh on factory floors and drain into waterways used to irrigate local family farms. Sewing floors in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are crammed with women working for illegally low wages to produce garments as efficiently as machines. Back in America, our jeans get stowed, picked, and shipped out by Amazon warehouse workers pressed to be as quick as the robots primed to replace them. Finally, those jeans we had to have get sent to landfills--or, if they've been "donated," shipped back around the world to Africa, where they're sold for pennies in secondhand markets or buried and burned in mountains of garbage. A sprawling, deeply researched, and provocative tour-de-force, Unraveled is not just the story of a pair of pants, but also the story of our global economy and our role in it. Told with piercing insight and unprecedented reporting, Unraveled challenges us to use our relationship with our jeans--and all that we wear--to reclaim our central role as citizens to refashion a society in which all people can thrive and preserve the planet for generations to come.
