This book was released on 2021-11-22 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a critical edition of the immensely influential and popular first version of The Christian Directory, by the notorious Elizabethan Jesuit leader, Robert Persons. It was written during and immediately after the English Mission of 1580-1, which ended with the martyrdom of his companion Edmund Campion. Persons's work, originally entitled The First Booke of the Christian Exercise, appertayning to Resolution, attempts to persuade the reader to be resolved in the service of God. It deals with the motives and obstacles to such resolution. This edition includes a full apparatus of the alterations made to Persons's work by the Edmund Bunny, whose Protestant edition became an Elizabethan bestseller. It will be particularly useful to historians of the Catholic reformation and students of early modern English prose.

Book Standing Together In Troubled Times Unpublished Letters Of Pauli Einstein Franck And Others

Download or read book Standing Together In Troubled Times Unpublished Letters Of Pauli Einstein Franck And Others written by Misha Shifman and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2017-01-16 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This captivating book is a story of the friendship between a genius physicist Wolfgang Pauli and Charlotte Houtermans whose career in physics was not as glamorous. They met in the late 1920s in Germany, at the very onset of the quantum era and personally knew all the major players in the emergent quantum world that was very much part of central Europe: Germany, Austria, Hungary, Denmark and Switzerland. And Charlotte was a student at Göttingen that was right at the heart.Caught between two evils — Soviet Communism and German National Socialism — she would have probably perished if it were not for the brotherhood of physicists: Niels Bohr, Wolfgang Pauli, Albert Einstein, James Franck, Max Born, Robert Oppenheimer and many other noted scientists who tried to save friends and colleagues (either leftist sympathizers or Jews) who were in mortal danger of being entrapped in a simmering pre-WWII Europe.Using newly discovered documents from the Houtermans family archive: twenty three Pauli's letters to Charlotte Houtermans, her correspondence with other great physicists, Charlotte's diaries, interviews with her children, almost all documents presented in this book are published for the first time.

Book John Venn Unpublished Writings and Selected Correspondence

Download or read book John Venn Unpublished Writings and Selected Correspondence written by Lukas M. Verburgt and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-25 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to present a carefully chosen and annotated selection of the unpublished writings and correspondence of the English logician John Venn (1834-1923). Today remembered mainly as the inventor of the famous diagram that bears his name, Venn was an important figure of nineteenth-century Cambridge, where he worked alongside leading thinkers, such as Henry Sidgwick and Alfred Marshall, on the development of the Moral Sciences Tripos. Venn published three influential textbooks on logic, contributed some dozen articles to the then newly-established journal Mind, of which he became co-editor in 1892, and counted F.W. Maitland, William Cunningham and Arthur Balfour among his pupils. After his active career as a logician, which ended around the turn of the 20th century, Venn reinvented himself as a biographer of his University, College and family. Together with his son, he worked on the massive Alumni Cantabrigienses, which is still used today as a standard reference source. The material presented here, including the 100-page Annals: Autobiographical Sketch, provides much new information on Venn's philosophical development and Cambridge in the 1850s-60s. It also brings to light Venn's relation with famous colleagues and friends, such as Leslie Stephen, Francis Galton, and William Stanley Jevons, thereby placing him at the heart of Victorian intellectual life.

Book Imagine My Surprise

Download or read book Imagine My Surprise written by Iain Hollingshead and published by Aurum. This book was released on 2012-10-18 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essential humour gift book of the year returns in the anticipated fourth volume of this bestselling series Ð guaranteed to provoke laughter and amazement. The first volume of unpublished letters to the Daily Telegraph, Am I Alone in ThinkingÉ?, not only became a Christmas bestseller but also established the paperÕs letter-writers as a uniquely waggish, eccentric and maverick institution. They can be relied upon, particularly in the letters slightly too pungent or off-the wall to print, to offer a new and memorable take on the great events of the day. Now, with the fourth book in the series, Iain Hollingshead collects together our favourite letterwriters on everything from this summerÕs Olympics to the QueenÕs Diamond Jubilee, as well as the rather more obscure concerns voiced by ÔMÕ, the habitual correspondent who believes himself to be the head of MI5 but writes from an internet cafŽ in Bristol. Trenchant, choleric and hilariously funny, this will once again be the humour book of the year.

Book Collected Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson Volume VIII Letters and Social Aims

Download or read book Collected Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson Volume VIII Letters and Social Aims written by Ralph Waldo Emerson and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2010-02-15 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Letters and Social Aims, published in 1875, contains essays originally published early in the 1840s as well as those that were the product of a collaborative effort among Emerson, his daughter Ellen Tucker Emerson, his son Edward Waldo Emerson, and his literary executor James Eliot Cabot. The volume takes up the topics of Poetry and Imagination, Social Aims, Eloquence, Resources, The Comic, Quotation and Originality, Progress of Culture, Persian Poetry, Inspiration, Greatness, and, appropriately for Emerson's last published book, Immortality. The historical introduction demonstrates for the first time the decline in Emerson's creative powers after 1865; the strain caused by the preparation of a poetry anthology and delivery of lectures at Harvard during this time; the devastating effect of a house fire in 1872; and how the Emerson children and Cabot worked together to enable Emerson to complete the book. The textual introduction traces this collaborative process in detail and also provides new information about the genesis of the volume as a response to a proposed unauthorized British edition of Emerson's works.
