Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers ways to resolve the imbalance between the demand and supply of mental health services. Treatment services in most countries reach only a minority of people identified as suffering from a mental disorder. Few countries can provide adequate health services for all the mentally ill, yet none has developed a rational system to decide who should be treated. The questions are clear. Could we develop a staged treatment process to reach all in need? If not, how do we decide who to treat? What should the criteria be for deployment of scarce treatment resources? How do we determine such criteria? What are the ethical implications of applying such criteria? In this pioneering work, an international team of eminent psychiatrists, epidemiologists, health administrators, economists and health planners examine these questions. The result will inform and encourage all concerned with the equitable provision of mental health care.

Book The Most Beautiful Disaster

Download or read book The Most Beautiful Disaster written by Hope Carpenter and published by FaithWords. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hope Carpenter opens up about her personal struggles that nearly destroyed her family, her church, and her ministry, but then God did something miraculous—out of her brokenness, He made something beautiful. As co-pastor of one of the nation's largest megachurches, Hope Carpenter had perfected the roles of supportive wife, good mother, devoted worship leader, and dutiful homemaker. But inside, she was secretly ashamed, sad, and afraid. She didn't know who she was, and she didn't know how to ask for help without bringing down the whole façade. A series of bad choices led to multiple affairs; her husband kicked her out and announced from the pulpit of their church that their marriage was over. Hope was sure her life was done. But in her lowest moments, something beautiful happened. God met her there, and, with a lot of hard work, time, and mountains of therapy, she started to understand the pain that had caused her to act out. She and her family faced their brokenness together, and in powerful acts of forgiveness only God could have arranged, they all found real breakthrough and healing. Ron and Hope rebuilt their marriage and their family, and their ministry thrives today. In The Most Beautiful Disaster, Hope helps readers understand the lasting impact of childhood trauma and gives readers practical steps to uncovering the root of pain in their own lives. She shows how small decisions can lead to big changes, and helps readers find healing and wholeness in Scripture and prayer. Ultimately, readers will be led to hope, reconciliation, and true freedom.

Book Cancer Care for the Whole Patient

Download or read book Cancer Care for the Whole Patient written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-03-19 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer care today often provides state-of-the-science biomedical treatment, but fails to address the psychological and social (psychosocial) problems associated with the illness. This failure can compromise the effectiveness of health care and thereby adversely affect the health of cancer patients. Psychological and social problems created or exacerbated by cancer-including depression and other emotional problems; lack of information or skills needed to manage the illness; lack of transportation or other resources; and disruptions in work, school, and family life-cause additional suffering, weaken adherence to prescribed treatments, and threaten patients' return to health. Today, it is not possible to deliver high-quality cancer care without using existing approaches, tools, and resources to address patients' psychosocial health needs. All patients with cancer and their families should expect and receive cancer care that ensures the provision of appropriate psychosocial health services. Cancer Care for the Whole Patient recommends actions that oncology providers, health policy makers, educators, health insurers, health planners, researchers and research sponsors, and consumer advocates should undertake to ensure that this standard is met.

Book Ocular Pharmacology Recent Breakthroughs and Unmet Needs

Download or read book Ocular Pharmacology Recent Breakthroughs and Unmet Needs written by Claudio Bucolo and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-03-28 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research on ocular pharmacology has increased significantly, over the past decade. More recently, the discovery and approval of eye disease modifying treatments is considered an unbelievable scientific breakthrough. Anti-VEGF molecules, cell therapy and gene therapy for age-related retinal degeneration, autologous corneal cells replacement, and Leber’s congenital amaurosis to name a few as some impressive examples. New drugs have been recently introduced for the treatment of glaucoma focusing on new pharmacological targets, such as Rho kinase inhibitors. For example, such novel treatments have been approved for optic neuromyelitis spectrum disorders. Regarding diseases of the front of the eye, advances have been reached with approval of recombinant Nerve Growth Factor (cenegermin) for treatment of neurotrophic keratitis. New discoveries and treatments recently introduced in ophthalmology should promote new efforts and encourage research in ocular pharmacology. It is noteworthy that several medical unmet needs remain in the field of ocular diseases, particularly for glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy (DR) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Early stages of DR or dry AMD need a cure and glaucoma deserves a new therapeutic approach in terms of retinal ganglion cells protection. Furthermore, current pharmacological treatments of glaucoma do not address one major issue underlying the pathology: neuroinflammation. When it comes to dry eye disorders, novel ophthalmic formulations and research findings focusing on immunomodulatory responses are welcomed to provide new insights on these conditions. Finally, one of the most challenging aspects in ocular pharmacology is related to ocular drug delivery. This Research Topic would like to address and discuss important medical unmet needs, and include a tangible contribution to handle sight threatening diseases that have a devastating impact not only for the patients but also for the healthcare system. This Research Topic aims to translate new basic science into clinically breakthrough therapies to help patients faced with debilitating ocular diseases. The Topic welcomes submissions of Original Research, Reviews, Clinical trials, and Case Reports articles that cover the following topics, but not limited to: • Diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers as potential pharmacological target of eye diseases (glaucoma, retinal diseases, ocular surface diseases). • Investigation on novel pharmacological targets for treatment of diabetic retinopathy, age related macular degeneration, glaucoma and dry eye. • New ocular drug delivery systems.

Book Addressing the Unmet Needs of Cataract Patients When Quality of Vision Can Make the Difference in Quality of Life

Download or read book Addressing the Unmet Needs of Cataract Patients When Quality of Vision Can Make the Difference in Quality of Life written by Rita Mencucci and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-10-13 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the ageing population, the need for cataract surgery is increasing very steeply in line with demographic change. Cataract surgery is a highly successful and cost-effective intervention, but the implantation of conventional monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) only allows a restoration of distance vision, with minimal postoperative functionality of near and intermediate vision, which are necessary for many common daily tasks. Although the removal of the opacified crystalline lens has been demonstrated to have a very positive impact on the mental health, daily functioning, and Quality of Life (QoL) of patients, it is not surprising that the poor visual restoration achieved with conventional monofocal IOLs at different near and intermediate distances might limit patient functioning and consequently QoL, considering changing lifestyles and increased working years. Therefore, this has led to a growing interest toward IOLs that may also reduce spectacle dependence for intermediate and near distances.
