Book Unmasking Me

Download or read book Unmasking Me written by Winny Mbianda and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-11-03 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry is the love of my life. In it, I have learned to let my thoughts flow. It taught me to paint the pictures the world gave me. The poems you will read in this book are those I wrote during my bipolar moments, or should I say, my moments of both uncertainty and contentment. They narrate my path. They paint the beauty of the hills I have traveled, the swampy rivers I have swum in, and the scenic oceans I have sailed. I am where I am today because I believed words held my destiny. Words and I began courting the day I learned how to write. They seduced me, broke my heart, and yet had the power to mend it. For years, I have thought of whether unveiling my life this way would be an efficient way to portray to individuals out there that no matter the turmoil they may encounter, Christ will always be present. I am taking a leap of faith, trusting that through these autobiographical words of mine, God will enable me to penetrate the hearts of his beloved. The purpose of this book is to unveil the love of God through the magical imagery often portrayed through poetry. I think a lot, and I often like to travel through these thoughts. The dimensions I go through teach me, mold me, and thus open my eyes a tad wider. I wish to share my visions particularly with the youth of today. May these words enlighten you as they do me every time I lay eyes on them. May they fortify, transform, and push you to become stronger individuals. May your faith be augmented, your hopes be intensified, and your will to dwell in Christ outshine every other desire you may have. Enjoy, and God bless you all.

Book excerpt: A deep dive into the spectrum of Autistic experience and the phenomenon of masked Autism, giving individuals the tools to safely uncover their true selves while broadening society’s narrow understanding of neurodiversity “A remarkable work that will stand at the forefront of the neurodiversity movement.”—Barry M. Prizant, PhD, CCC-SLP, author of Uniquely Human: A Different Way of Seeing Autism For every visibly Autistic person you meet, there are countless “masked” Autistic people who pass as neurotypical. Masking is a common coping mechanism in which Autistic people hide their identifiably Autistic traits in order to fit in with societal norms, adopting a superficial personality at the expense of their mental health. This can include suppressing harmless stims, papering over communication challenges by presenting as unassuming and mild-mannered, and forcing themselves into situations that cause severe anxiety, all so they aren’t seen as needy or “odd.” In Unmasking Autism, Dr. Devon Price shares his personal experience with masking and blends history, social science research, prescriptions, and personal profiles to tell a story of neurodivergence that has thus far been dominated by those on the outside looking in. For Dr. Price and many others, Autism is a deep source of uniqueness and beauty. Unfortunately, living in a neurotypical world means it can also be a source of incredible alienation and pain. Most masked Autistic individuals struggle for decades before discovering who they truly are. They are also more likely to be marginalized in terms of race, gender, sexual orientation, class, and other factors, which contributes to their suffering and invisibility. Dr. Price lays the groundwork for unmasking and offers exercises that encourage self-expression, including: • Celebrating special interests • Cultivating Autistic relationships • Reframing Autistic stereotypes • And rediscovering your values It’s time to honor the needs, diversity, and unique strengths of Autistic people so that they no longer have to mask—and it’s time for greater public acceptance and accommodation of difference. In embracing neurodiversity, we can all reap the rewards of nonconformity and learn to live authentically, Autistic and neurotypical people alike.

Book excerpt: The journey of becoming a healer is never achieved by the acquisition of knowledge, power, or external recognition. When we stop clinging to our pursuit of greatness, healing comes naturally. Unmasking: A Journey of Awakening is a soulful allegory about one man’s healing journey. Mason was born to an Indigenous father and an English Canadian mother, but having lost them both at a young age, he is abruptly severed from his roots. In the wake of his parents’ death, he weathers immeasurable loss, foster homes, and childhood trauma. Before getting to high school, Mason becomes an expert on suffering. Mason pulls himself up by his bootstraps and, through the generosity of strangers, manages to get to university, where he ultimately pursues doctoral studies in psychology. His intellectual travels launch him on a lifelong search of his identity in relation to others. Along the way, he encounters remarkable people who reveal him to himself—character flaws and all. Through his investigations of issues such as death and dying, personality development, humans’ propensity to needlessly suffer, mental health, and healing the mind-body-spirit, Mason understands that his efforts to become a healer were a projection of his own healing needs. By probing his journey to become a healer, he releases himself from his attachment to his identity as a psychologist and discovers the freeing impact of truly healing others. Drawing from a dazzling array of psychological and philosophical frameworks, Unmasking: A Journey of Awakening explores personal growth, the limitations and power of the ordinary mind, humans’ preoccupation with suffering, the impact of community.

Book Unmasking AI

Download or read book Unmasking AI written by Joy Buolamwini and published by Random House. This book was released on 2024-11-19 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • “The conscience of the AI revolution” (Fortune) explains how we’ve arrived at an era of AI harms and oppression, and what we can do to avoid its pitfalls. “AI is not coming, it’s here. If we answer the beautiful call inside these pages, we can decide who we are going to be and how we’re going to use technology in service of what it means to be fully human.”—Brené Brown, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Dare to Lead A LOS ANGELES TIMES BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR • Shortlisted for the Inc. Non-Obvious Book Award To most of us, it seems like recent developments in artificial intelligence emerged out of nowhere to pose unprecedented threats to humankind. But to Dr. Joy Buolamwini, who has been at the forefront of AI research, this moment has been a long time in the making. After tinkering with robotics as a high school student in Memphis and then developing mobile apps in Zambia as a Fulbright fellow, Buolamwini followed her lifelong passion for computer science, engineering, and art to MIT in 2015. As a graduate student at the “Future Factory,” she did groundbreaking research that exposed widespread racial and gender bias in AI services from tech giants across the world. Unmasking AI goes beyond the headlines about existential risks produced by Big Tech. It is the remarkable story of how Buolamwini uncovered what she calls “the coded gaze”—the evidence of encoded discrimination and exclusion in tech products—and how she galvanized the movement to prevent AI harms by founding the Algorithmic Justice League. Applying an intersectional lens to both the tech industry and the research sector, she shows how racism, sexism, colorism, and ableism can overlap and render broad swaths of humanity “excoded” and therefore vulnerable in a world rapidly adopting AI tools. Computers, she reminds us, are reflections of both the aspirations and the limitations of the people who create them. Encouraging experts and non-experts alike to join this fight, Buolamwini writes, “The rising frontier for civil rights will require algorithmic justice. AI should be for the people and by the people, not just the privileged few.”

Book Unmasking the Male Soul

Download or read book Unmasking the Male Soul written by Wilmer G. Villacorta and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-09-23 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unmasking the Male Soul is about freedom that confronts the innate and enslaving obsession for power and control in destructive ways. At the core of this liberating process, we must acknowledge that we cannot escape the sociocultural matrix in which every human being emerges. In denying their fallen nature, human beings set aside their dependency on God and become self-centered and self-reliant. It is from their self-centered hearts that human beings foster dynamics of coercion, domination, competition, and distorted self-realization at the expense of others. This cycle of shame and guilt is well-disguised behind a mask which enables them to enact these dynamics in subtle ways. At times even in the name of religion, men followed the illusion of their internal insecurities and became dependent on masks of power and control. It is time to break away from the chains of exclusion and devaluation of women in Christian leadership. Masculinities have only perpetrated a narrative of exceptionalism as the apex of humankind, and often they have contrasted to subservient expectations of women in leading others. Each chapter responds to the implicit male silence on the issue in a multidisciplinary way with historical, sociocultural, theological, and scriptural implications. In this book, I will endeavor to challenge the masks of masculinities and dismantle several mental models that foment a gender divide in Christ-like leadership in the twenty-first century.
