Book Unmasking Barriers Unleashing Potential

Download or read book Unmasking Barriers Unleashing Potential written by William London Thompson and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black male student-athletes at predominantly White institutions (PWI) are funneled through Student-athlete Academic Support Services (SASS) programs where advisors primarily focus on maintaining NCAA athletic eligibility instead of degree completion, which is detrimental to their academic identity development. The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of academic advisors within SASS programs at PWIs to understand how they perceive their role in supporting the academic identity development and degree completion of Black male student-athletes. To investigate this phenomenon, the researcher conducted semi-structured interviews, a focus group, and maintained a researcher's journal. This research was guided by one overarching central research question, with two sub-questions: 1. How do academic advisors who support Black male student-athletes as part of a Student-athlete Academic Support Services (SASS) program at predominantly White institutions describe their lived experience? a. How do academic advisors describe the challenges they face in supporting the academic identity development of Black male student-athletes at predominantly White institutions? b. How do social justice frameworks inform advising practice within Student-athlete Academic Support Services (SASS) programs at predominantly White institutions? Three interconnected modes of thought supported the conceptual framework that informed this study: (a) college student development theory, (b) advising practice, and (c) critical race theory. The researcher introduced the CSS Framework identifying critical support practices that activate student success which includes: (a) centering the lived experiences of Black male student-athletes, (b) naming and resisting structural violence, and (c) implementing critical pedagogies. Four recommendations were suggested: (1) Top-level university leadership should prioritize diversity and inclusion in their hiring practices within Student-athlete Academic Support Services (SASS) programs to ensure their most at-risk populations, who are overwhelmingly Black and male student-athletes, receive the support they need; (2) Athletic programs (recruiters, coaches) should involve Student-athlete Academic Support Services (SASS) advisors in the recruiting process and vet potential recruits with consideration of their academic dispositions; (3) In consideration for the academic implications of student-athletes transferring from one institution to another, policymakers should work with NCAA member institutions to create standardized four to six-year student-athlete degree paths and waive residency requirements; and (4) Because of the valuable work Student-athlete Academic Support Services (SASS) advisors perform in support of vulnerable student-athlete populations, their practice should be informed by an intimate knowledge and dependence on theory as a basis for practice. Keywords: academic identity, academic advising, anti-racism, degree completion, Black male student-athletes, student-athlete academic support programs.

Book Dare to Lead

Download or read book Dare to Lead written by Brené Brown and published by Random House. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Brené Brown has taught us what it means to dare greatly, rise strong, and brave the wilderness. Now, based on new research conducted with leaders, change makers, and culture shifters, she’s showing us how to put those ideas into practice so we can step up and lead. Don’t miss the five-part HBO Max docuseries Brené Brown: Atlas of the Heart! NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY BLOOMBERG Leadership is not about titles, status, and wielding power. A leader is anyone who takes responsibility for recognizing the potential in people and ideas, and has the courage to develop that potential. When we dare to lead, we don’t pretend to have the right answers; we stay curious and ask the right questions. We don’t see power as finite and hoard it; we know that power becomes infinite when we share it with others. We don’t avoid difficult conversations and situations; we lean into vulnerability when it’s necessary to do good work. But daring leadership in a culture defined by scarcity, fear, and uncertainty requires skill-building around traits that are deeply and uniquely human. The irony is that we’re choosing not to invest in developing the hearts and minds of leaders at the exact same time as we’re scrambling to figure out what we have to offer that machines and AI can’t do better and faster. What can we do better? Empathy, connection, and courage, to start. Four-time #1 New York Times bestselling author Brené Brown has spent the past two decades studying the emotions and experiences that give meaning to our lives, and the past seven years working with transformative leaders and teams spanning the globe. She found that leaders in organizations ranging from small entrepreneurial startups and family-owned businesses to nonprofits, civic organizations, and Fortune 50 companies all ask the same question: How do you cultivate braver, more daring leaders, and how do you embed the value of courage in your culture? In this new book, Brown uses research, stories, and examples to answer these questions in the no-BS style that millions of readers have come to expect and love. Brown writes, “One of the most important findings of my career is that daring leadership is a collection of four skill sets that are 100 percent teachable, observable, and measurable. It’s learning and unlearning that requires brave work, tough conversations, and showing up with your whole heart. Easy? No. Because choosing courage over comfort is not always our default. Worth it? Always. We want to be brave with our lives and our work. It’s why we’re here.” Whether you’ve read Daring Greatly and Rising Strong or you’re new to Brené Brown’s work, this book is for anyone who wants to step up and into brave leadership.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) was the first global pandemic of the twenty-first century, spreading within weeks from southern China to over thirty-seven countries around the world. In Canada intense news media coverage had a profound impact on how the disease was perceived, with frontline health care workers, despite their heroic efforts, stigmatized due to their contact with patients. Will SARS or another pandemic influenza reoccur and, if it does, have we learned how to manage pandemics more effectively? In SARS Unmasked risk communication expert Michael Tyshenko offers answers to this and other questions. Cathy Peterson, who worked as a nurse clinician during the Toronto SARS crisis, adds an important view from the frontlines. Their analysis reveals an out-of-control situation with mixed risk communication messages, a lack of leadership, and an overwhelmed health care system that was unable to both cope with the crisis in Toronto and provide adequate support for their most valuable employees at the time - health care workers. Taking a very broad perspective, grounded in risk assessment, SARS Unmasked adds important information to what has already been said about the 2003 crisis, focusing on the human and societal effects of an infectious disease pandemic and providing tangible guidance for future pandemic threats.

Book Hegel and Contemporary Practical Philosophy

Download or read book Hegel and Contemporary Practical Philosophy written by James Gledhill and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-08 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Kantian constructivism has become one of the most influential and systematic schools of thought in analytic moral and political philosophy, Hegelian approaches to practical normativity hold out the promise of building upon Kantian insights into individual self-determination while avoiding their dualistic tendencies. James Gledhill and Sebastian Stein unite distinguished scholars of German idealism and contemporary Anglophone practical philosophy with rising stars in the field, to explore whether Hegelian idealist philosophy can offer the categories that analytic practical philosophy requires to overcome the contradictions that have so far plagued Kantian constructivism. The volume organizes the contributions into three parts. The first of these engages debates in metaethics regarding the relationship between realism and constructivism. The second part sees contributors draw on debates about the nature of political normativity, focusing primarily on the problems of historical contextualism, relativism, and critical reflection. The concluding part considers the application of the Hegelian framework to contemporary debates about specific ethical issues, including multiculturalism, democracy, and human rights. Hegel and Contemporary Practical Philosophy contributes to the on-going debate about the importance of systematic philosophy in the context of practical philosophy, engages with contemporary discussions about the shape of a rational social order, and gauges the timeliness of Hegelian philosophy. This book is a must read for scholars interested in Hegel and in the contemporary tradition of Kantian constructivism in moral and political philosophy.
