Book Unmasking the Pain Poetry Journal

Download or read book Unmasking the Pain Poetry Journal written by Alicia Brennen and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2006-12-06 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of 'Unmasking The Pain' is not to male-bash or take revenge on the men who have hurt me. Its true purpose is to help men and women alike confront the issues in their lives that prevent them from experiencing healthy, happy, secure, mature relationships. I have tried to sound off to other women, but I find that too many are in denial and are still trying to cover up the reality of their own pain. Many times, by the time you finish sharing with them, the women friends are off gossiping about your problem with others rather than sitting with you, holding your hand and walking with you through the pain. I tried to tell the men in my life what pain they were causing, but they did not want to take responsibility for their behavior and blamed me for everything. I even bared my soul early in a new relationship, I guess, hoping he would understand what I had been through and not hurt me too. However, my sounding board soon became my dartboard as he very quickly inflicted new hurt upon old, unhealed wounds. It was then that I woke up to the reality that hurting people, unwilling to confront what ails them, are incapable of loving, only hurting. And so, I write. I write for myself. It only took a little over a week to express myself in these words but this book represents over twenty years of hurt and pain that I carried all bottled up inside. Writing this book has served as a much needed release valve as I found that expressing my pain in this way provided good therapy for a wounded heart. I call it my 11-day Therapeutic Wonder! I write for all my children: Andrew, Zoe, Destiny and the yet unborn (Danielle, born 2002). I do not want my son to become the kind of men expressed in thesepages. Neither do I want my daughters to experience this kind of pain at the hands of emotionally crippled men. So if I can help them to make good choices from an early age then my labor would not have been in vain. Also I hope to influence other fathers and mothers to commit to raising emotionally healthy sons and daughters. After all, it may be one of their children who has a relationship with one of mine. I write for the next generation. The women of the generation before me are not talking. No one ever told me about the hurts and pain. And no one ever told me how to get over. Many of them have not gotten over themselves, living lives of bitterness and anger, denying the existence of pain buried and suppressed for years on end. And until they are willing to confront their own issues and deal with the bad choices of the past they will continue on in their emotionally crippled state. They need healing too. I write because I want to be a stepping-stone and not a stumbling block to the generation of younger women who are hurting today and in need of answers. Sometimes just knowing that you are not alone is the first in the step towards healing. I write because raw naked emotions like, love and pain, scare people. We cannot run away from who we really are. Our ability to love and experience emotions like joy and pain is what separates us from the lower animal order. They make us human. And when we deny and suppress these feelings we become inhumane. I write because I want to open wounds, unmask pain and confront issues that we do not want to address. And until we women and men begin to look at ourselves, and this pattern of destructive behavior constantly being played out in our adultlives, we will never heal and experience the joy of happy relationships, rich in positive emotions. Healthy relationships we can model for our children. I write because I want to end the Cycle of Abuse! This book is more than a book of poetry. The book is deliberately designed as a help tool and is divided into two sections: Poetic Expressions and Private Journal. Poetic Expressions is where I took the time I needed to express myself. Private Journey is to give you an opportunity to express yourself in response to eac

Book The Culture of Pain

Download or read book The Culture of Pain written by David B. Morris and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1991-09-09 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about the meanings we make out of pain. The greatest surprise I encountered in discussing this topic over the past ten years was the consistency with which I was asked a single unvarying question: Are you writing about physical pain or mental pain? The overwhelming consistency of this response convinces me that modern culture rests upon and underlying belief so strong that it grips us with the force of a founding myth. Call it the Myth of Two Pains. We live in an era when many people believe--as a basic, unexamined foundation of thought--that pain comes divided into separate types: physical and mental. These two types of pain, so the myth goes, are as different as land and sea. You feel physical pain if your arm breaks, and you feel mental pain if your heart breaks. Between these two different events we seem to imagine a gulf so wide and deep that it might as well be filled by a sea that is impossible to navigate.

Download or read book Pain written by Marni Jackson and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is pain so poorly understood? Why do we still distinguish between mental pain and physical pain, when pain is always an emotional experience? How can it be that science is about to clone a human being but still can't cure the pain of a bad back? If pain is the reason why most people visit the doctor, why are most doctors so bad at addressing the problem of suffering? Marni Jackson's PAIN: THE FIFTH VITAL SIGN is a witty, personal and groundbreaking inquiry into the nature, treatment and definition of human pain, one of the most misunderstood and elusive subjects to challenge humankind. In the questing and narrative manner of Oliver Sacks, Jackson takes us back into the history of pain and forward into the possibilities of pain genetics, Jackson brings us stories both of people in pain and the pain pioneers: eccentrics and artists, wrestlers and writers, psychologists and philosophers, nurses and doctors. Above all, Pain makes an elusive subject vivid and readable. We all know what pain is. Now Marni Jackson has given it a voice.

Book Pain Generation

Book excerpt: "This book troubles the phenomenon of feminists turning to social media to respond to and enact the political potential of pain inflicted in the acts of sexual harassment, sexual violence, and sexual abuse. Anchoring its analysis in theories and criticisms of neoliberal feminism, this book illustrates the complexity of how in using digital platforms that are governed by neoliberal logic, feminists take on a "neoliberal self(ie) gaze" in their social media activism, potentially undercutting their work toward social justice"--

Book Diary of Agony and Hope

Download or read book Diary of Agony and Hope written by E. Hammond Oglesby and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-11-18 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book, Diary of Agony and Hope, explores the ethical themes of justice and hope through the lens of folk sayings, case studies, and real-life experiences on the part of the writer as a resident of St. Louis County for over thirty years. The writer believes that the tears for the fruits of justice in the Michael Brown, Jr. case are tears that will be further reckoned with in light of their implications for reform--especially in the use of deadly force--among police departments throughout the community of Ferguson and our troubled land. Here every American must work together for a better society! The writer believes that the daunting task of working together will build bridges of trust, understanding, and hope between police officers and the communities in which they serve: particularly communities of color. Research for this volume was largely taken from the writer's diary. Insightful and engaging, this book is a "must read" for morally concerned Americans who want to know more about the story of the Ferguson Movement. In the movement itself for justice on the part of peace protestors, we see the force of love among ordinary people of goodwill.

Download or read book Unmasking Autism written by Devon Price, PhD and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2022-04-05 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A deep dive into the spectrum of Autistic experience and the phenomenon of masked Autism, giving individuals the tools to safely uncover their true selves while broadening society’s narrow understanding of neurodiversity “A remarkable work that will stand at the forefront of the neurodiversity movement.”—Barry M. Prizant, PhD, CCC-SLP, author of Uniquely Human: A Different Way of Seeing Autism For every visibly Autistic person you meet, there are countless “masked” Autistic people who pass as neurotypical. Masking is a common coping mechanism in which Autistic people hide their identifiably Autistic traits in order to fit in with societal norms, adopting a superficial personality at the expense of their mental health. This can include suppressing harmless stims, papering over communication challenges by presenting as unassuming and mild-mannered, and forcing themselves into situations that cause severe anxiety, all so they aren’t seen as needy or “odd.” In Unmasking Autism, Dr. Devon Price shares his personal experience with masking and blends history, social science research, prescriptions, and personal profiles to tell a story of neurodivergence that has thus far been dominated by those on the outside looking in. For Dr. Price and many others, Autism is a deep source of uniqueness and beauty. Unfortunately, living in a neurotypical world means it can also be a source of incredible alienation and pain. Most masked Autistic individuals struggle for decades before discovering who they truly are. They are also more likely to be marginalized in terms of race, gender, sexual orientation, class, and other factors, which contributes to their suffering and invisibility. Dr. Price lays the groundwork for unmasking and offers exercises that encourage self-expression, including: • Celebrating special interests • Cultivating Autistic relationships • Reframing Autistic stereotypes • And rediscovering your values It’s time to honor the needs, diversity, and unique strengths of Autistic people so that they no longer have to mask—and it’s time for greater public acceptance and accommodation of difference. In embracing neurodiversity, we can all reap the rewards of nonconformity and learn to live authentically, Autistic and neurotypical people alike.

Book excerpt: This is designed as a textbook for medical practitioners preparing for higher qualification examinations in pain medicine, as well as a reference book for other medical and allied healthcare workers. A unique feature of the book is its multidisciplinary approach to manage pain. This is reflected by the contributors' multi-national/cultural origin and the diversity in their medical background (anaesthesiology, neurosurgery, orthopaedic surgery, internal medicine, clinical oncology, clinical psychology, nursing, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy). Essential topics in pain medicine are grouped under five sections: scientific basis of pain medicine, common clinical pain conditions, pain pharmacology, interventional procedures, and multidisciplinary approach. Different aspects and approaches in modern pain medicine are covered, including advances in research on pain mechanism, pain psychology, epidemiology, diagnosis, pain assessment, patient evaluation, pain medications, up-to-date interventional procedures, cognitive behavioral therapy, and other specialized therapeutic modalities. Besides the above topics, which assist the patient in fighting acute, chronnic, and cancer pain, there are two chapters dedicated to paediatric and geriatric patients respectively, as special consideration is need for these age groups.
