  • Pages : 296 pages

Download or read book Singles written by Leonard Cargan and published by SAGE Publications, Incorporated. This book was released on 1982-04 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people, on learning that someone is unmarried, assume that it is not by choice. Unmarried women, particularly, are seen as being incompetent or unattractive. Marriage, in an economy dominated by males, is still seen as a form of success, while a single woman is regarded as a failure. Single men are often seen as being immature, selfish, tied to mother, or deeply inadequate. The authors of this book compare singles with marrieds to separate myths and realities. Questionnaires were also given to members of a singles organization. The research yielded such interesting results as: far from being selfish, singles devote more time to community work. They are not richer, even without the expense of children, because they have to pay so much tax. They do have more fun, but they are indeed more lonely. This book presents one of the first extended scientific studies of this much misunderstood minority. 'This is a well-conducted survey of a group that has not received much attention in the past, and should be of interest to all professionals concerned with marriage and family.' -- Personality and Individual Differences

Book excerpt: SINGLE or UNMARRIED IS A QUESTION OF CATATONIC EXISTANCE VERSUS LIVING EFFECTIVELY. since the dawn of humanity, not everyone attains the state of true singleness in their lifetime. To be married—like being single—is simply a legal marital status. A truly single person—single or married—is an individual who has discovered God’s purpose for his or her life, pursues excellence as a matter of policy in all endeavors, and is matured spiritually, emotionally, and mentally. Notable by their signature fingerprint—excellence—and footprint—matured character, true singles are like the salt of the earth, the light of the world, and a city set on a hill. Employing his innovative and ground-breaking concepts—such as the ‘Troublemaker’ and ‘Artistic-soldier’ models—the author discloses in his Magnum Opus that true singleness is a goal to be pursued. It is neither an embarrassment to be avoided nor a burden to do away with at all costs. Achieving true singleness will transform your preferences and priorities. It will help you to differentiate right from good, choose what is right, and, more importantly, do what is right for the right reason(s). To the global community of single adults, this book will help you discover whether you are just an unmarried or a truly single person. It uncovers ancient hidden secrets to becoming a truly single person, living a fulfilling life, and building a firm foundation for marital success. "The awareness Single or Unmarried seeks to generate is well-timed." —REV. JOHN KWESI DARKU Executive Director—Africa, Christ For All Nations (CFAN) "I have been married for over half a century, and the secret is this—discover your life assignment and seek self-knowledge…Single or Unmarried will show you how." —GODFREY DANSO ABRAH Marriage Coach and Mentor, Wisdom Wedge

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A close-up examination and exploration, How We Live Now challenges our old concepts of what it means to be a family and have a home, opening the door to the many diverse and thriving experiments of living in twenty-first century America. Across America and around the world, in cities and suburbs and small towns, people from all walks of life are redefining our “lifespaces”—the way we live and who we live with. The traditional nuclear family in their single-family home on a suburban lot has lost its place of prominence in contemporary life. Today, Americans have more choices than ever before in creating new ways to live and meet their personal needs and desires. Social scientist, researcher, and writer Bella DePaulo has traveled across America to interview people experimenting with the paradigm of how we live. In How We Live Now, she explores everything from multi-generational homes to cohousing communities where one’s “family” is made up of friends and neighbors to couples “living apart together” to single-living, and ultimately uncovers a pioneering landscape for living that throws the old blueprint out the window. Through personal interviews and stories, media accounts, and in-depth research, How We Live Now explores thriving lifespaces, and offers the reader choices that are freer, more diverse, and more attuned to our modern needs for the twenty-first century and beyond.

Download or read book Sacred Singleness written by Leslie Ludy and published by Harvest House Publishers. This book was released on 2009-08-01 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leslie Ludy, popular writer and speaker, has a powerful message for today’s single adults. Through personal experience and in interaction with thousands of young women over the past fourteen years, she has found that most Christian young women fall into one of two categories: those who are discontent and unfulfilled, constantly searching for the “right one,” and those who are consumed by a passionate romance with Jesus Christ and are living joyful, satisfied lives. Her desire is to help readers move toward the totally surrendered and fulfilling experience rather than one of striving and disappointment. Leslie shares firsthand stories and testimonials of modern–day single women who may sometimes struggle with loneliness and personal desires but who, in following God’s plan for them, have discovered a deeper delight, purpose and true joy in their lives. Sacred Singleness gives every single woman the inspiration to live counter to the culture and find amazing opportunity in this sacred season.

Book 7 Myths about Singleness

Download or read book 7 Myths about Singleness written by Sam Allberry and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2019-02-14 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If marriage shows us the shape of the gospel, singleness shows us its sufficiency. Much of what we commonly assume about singleness—that it is primarily about the absence of good things like intimacy, family, or meaningful ministry—is either flat-out untrue or, at the very least, shouldn’t be true. To be single, we often think, is to be alone and spiritually hindered. But the Bible paints a very different picture of singleness: it is a positive gift and blessing from God. This book seeks to help Christians—married and unmarried alike—value singleness as a gift from God so that we can all encourage singles to take hold of the unique opportunities their singleness affords and see their role in the flourishing of the church as a whole.

Book Single and Satisfied

Download or read book Single and Satisfied written by Nancy Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Single women can sometimes be magnets for awkward questions, especially within the church community. What do you do with your life if you're not married? With an emphasis on strong marriages and biblical childrearing, unmarried women in the church can begin to think that they are somehow on the sidelines. But this is not the case. In this helpful volume, Nancy Wilson provides straightforward counsel and encouragement for those struggling with "the wait." She addresses practical concerns like building a career but focuses more specifically on important relational issues such as interacting with competitive women, respecting your parents even after you've left their home, establishing standards for male friends, and keeping the right outlook on your life. Whether a woman is called to singleness for a short time or for her whole life, she is called to be fruitful in God's kingdom"--

Book Marriage Markets

    Book Details:
  • Author : June Carbone
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2014-04-01
  • ISBN : 0199916594
  • Pages : 267 pages

Download or read book Marriage Markets written by June Carbone and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There was a time when the phrase "American family" conjured up a single, specific image: a breadwinner dad, a homemaker mom, and their 2.5 kids living comfortable lives in a middle-class suburb. Today, that image has been shattered, due in part to skyrocketing divorce rates, single parenthood, and increased out-of-wedlock births. But whether it is conservatives bewailing the wages of moral decline and women's liberation, or progressives celebrating the result of women's greater freedom and changing sexual mores, most Americans fail to identify the root factor driving the changes: economic inequality that is remaking the American family along class lines. In Marriage Markets, June Carbone and Naomi Cahn examine how macroeconomic forces are transforming our most intimate and important spheres, and how working class and lower income families have paid the highest price. Just like health, education, and seemingly every other advantage in life, a stable two-parent home has become a luxury that only the well-off can afford. The best educated and most prosperous have the most stable families, while working class families have seen the greatest increase in relationship instability. Why is this so? The book provides the answer: greater economic inequality has profoundly changed marriage markets, the way men and women match up when they search for a life partner. It has produced a larger group of high-income men than women; written off the men at the bottom because of chronic unemployment, incarceration, and substance abuse; and left a larger group of women with a smaller group of comparable men in the middle. The failure to see marriage as a market affected by supply and demand has obscured any meaningful analysis of the way that societal changes influence culture. Only policies that redress the balance between men and women through greater access to education, stable employment, and opportunities for social mobility can produce a culture that encourages commitment and investment in family life. A rigorous and enlightening account of why American families have changed so much in recent decades, Marriage Markets cuts through the ideological and moralistic rhetoric that drives our current debate. It offers critically needed solutions for a problem that will haunt America for generations to come.
