Book Unlocking the Torah Text Set

Download or read book Unlocking the Torah Text Set written by Shmuel Goldin and published by . This book was released on 2014-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlocking the Torah Text provides an in-depth journey into the Torah portion through a series of studies on each parsha. Each study opens with a brief summary of the narrative and then presents probing questions designed to strike to the core of the text. These questions are addressed through a review of traditional commentaries spanning the ages, combined with original approaches. Deep philosophical issues and perplexing textual questions are carefully examined and discussed in clear and incisive fashion. The actions and motivations of the patriarchs, matriarchs and other biblical figures are probed with an eye towards determining the lessons to be learned from the lives of these great personalities. Clear distinction is made between pshat (straightforward literal meaning) and Midrash (rabbinical exegesis) as both of these approaches to biblical text are carefully defined and applied. Finally, thought-provoking connections are raised between the eternal Torah narrative and critical issues of our time. Each study is thus constructed to encourage continued discussion and study of the Torah narrative.

Book The Jewish Book of Numbers

Download or read book The Jewish Book of Numbers written by Ronald H. Isaacs and published by Jason Aronson. This book was released on 1996 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is the number 13 considered lucky in Jewish tradition? What role do mathematics play in the Bible? How can numbers be used to uncover the "hidden" meanings of the Torah? Discover the fascinating world of Jewish numerology in The Jewish Book of Numbers. Noted rabbi and best-selling author Ronald H. Isaacs presents a delightful, easy-to-read introduction to the ways in which numbers are utilized in the Bible and rabbinic writings. Included are references to biblical arithmetic and the methods of expressing numbers in the Bible, examples of sacred numbers, biblical and rabbinic units of weights and measures, numbered Jewish lists, a section on gematria - the method of textual interpretation based on the numerical value of words, and notable Jewish quotations that feature numbers. In some cases, numbers in sacred texts are meant to be taken at face value, but more often they are noteworthy for their symbolic nuances. Since each Hebrew letter has a numerical equivalent, Jewish numerology is often used as a commentary to explain Jewish texts. Often used in the study of kabbalah (Jewish mysticism), gematria offers untold insights into Jewish tradition, as well as novel and curious interpretations of both biblical and rabbinic texts. Throughout the generations, Jewish folklore has also made use of interpretive numerology and expressed the importance of numbers in all phases of life. From 1 to 100,000,000, numbers play a variety of roles in Jewish tradition. They are used to mark life-cycle events such as the bris and religious observances such as the counting of the omer between Passover and Shavuot. They play prominent roles in our most well-known stories - such as Noah and the flood that lasted for 40 days and nights - and in our most sacred liturgy, like the Shema ("Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One"). Filled with interesting facts and intriguing details, The Jewish Book of Numbers is an entertaining way to explore Jewish literature that will most likely inspire further study.

Book Torah and the Book of Numbers

Download or read book Torah and the Book of Numbers written by Christian Frevel and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Documentary Hypothesis, which in the 20th century was the standard theory to explain the development of the Pentateuch, has been challenged from different angles. One important text corpus where new proposals have been brought into the debate is the Book of Numbers. The articles in this volume address the formation of the Book of Numbers from the earliest to the latest strata. They focus on topics like the source-source critical placement of the texts in Deuteronomy that retell events from Numbers and the status of the late priestly legal additions and their relation to prior texts of the Torah. Special attention is given to the composition of the final text of the Book of Numbers and its understanding of law and narrative. The authors of this volume partially contributed to a symposium on the topic "Torah in the Book of Numbers" at the Ruhr-Universitat Bochum, held on April 12-13, 2011.

Book Sefer BeMidbar as Sefer HaMiddot

Download or read book Sefer BeMidbar as Sefer HaMiddot written by Reuven Travis and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-09-07 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While it is true the Bible does relate important episodes in the history of the Jewish people, it is thought of as being much more than a history book. This is why many question the Bible's rationale for including a book such as Numbers, one that seems to be little more than a history book. In comparison, Genesis as a history book makes sense. It tells of the creation of the heavens and earth and the foundational stories of the Jewish people. Even Exodus, which relates the departure of the Jewish people from Egypt, has many legal sections. This thus begs the question: what exactly is the Book of Numbers, and what role does it play in the overall narrative of the Bible? Presenting Numbers as the book of character development is the major guiding principle of the pedagogical approach set forth in this book for teaching Numbers. This approach can also be used for teaching Genesis. However, the characters in Genesis are portrayed as either "very good" or "evil." Not so in Numbers, whose main personalities can and should be viewed in hues of grey, making it a very appropriate vehicle for teaching character development to high school students.
