Book Working with Analogies Grades 2 3

Download or read book Working with Analogies Grades 2 3 written by Sue Jeweler and published by Educational Impressions, Incorporated. This book was released on 2004-09-22 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding and decoding analogies is a skill that is transferable to reading comprehension, critical thinking, and creativity. Analogies can be expressed in visual, symbolic, numerical, verbal, and inferential terms. Analogies help students develop the ability to make and appreciate connections between and among a variety of stimuli. As students become more adept at using, creating, and deciphering analogies, the process of transferring and expressing the inherent nature of analogies becomes a "thinking game" for them. The game can be successfully played at almost any level of thinking. The use of analogy-based thinking can then be applied effectively to thinking about ideas and concepts in the array of facts, terms, and information presented throughout the various curricula students encounter at any grade in school. This book is divided into five main sections based upon the type of relationship described by the analogies in it: Part to Whole / Whole to Part; Synonyms / Antonyms; Cause to Effect / Effect to Cause; Purpose, Use or Function; and Degree; Part to Whole / Whole to Part. The analogies in this section describe the relationship between a thing and a piece or building block of that thing and vice versa; Synonyms / Antonyms. The analogies in this section describe the relationship between a thing and something that is similar in meaning (Synonym) or a thing and something that is opposite in meaning (Antonym); Cause to Effect / Effect to Cause. The analogies in this section describe the relationship between an event or happening and a resulting change or outcome and vice versa; Purpose, Use or Function. The analogies in this section describe the relationship between an object or a concept and how it works or why it exists; Degree. The analogies in this section describe the relationship between an object or an idea and the increasing or decreasing value of that object or idea.

It is an excellent, easy-to-use starting point for teaching well-established forms of logical thinking. Each skill is introduced with examples, and then worksheets give students an opportunity to practice the skill. Group lessons and worksheets provide practice in: finding relationships, analogies, thinking logically using “all” and “none” statements, syllogisms, and deductive reasoning using logic puzzles. Logical thinking is both enjoyable and challenging for students as they build a sound foundation for further instruction in critical thinking. Suggestions for related activities are included in the Instructions for Teachers section. For easier logic activities for younger students, try Lollipop Logic. Grades 2-4

Book From Molecule to Metaphor

Download or read book From Molecule to Metaphor written by Jerome Feldman and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2008-01-25 with total page 758 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In From Molecule to Metaphor, Jerome Feldman proposes a theory of language and thought that treats language not as an abstract symbol system but as a human biological ability that can be studied as a function of the brain, as vision and motor control are studied. This theory, he writes, is a "bridging theory" that works from extensive knowledge at two ends of a causal chain to explicate the links between. Although the cognitive sciences are revealing much about how our brains produce language and thought, we do not yet know exactly how words are understood or have any methodology for finding out. Feldman develops his theory in computer simulations—formal models that suggest ways that language and thought may be realized in the brain. Combining key findings and theories from biology, computer science, linguistics, and psychology, Feldman synthesizes a theory by exhibiting programs that demonstrate the required behavior while remaining consistent with the findings from all disciplines. After presenting the essential results on language, learning, neural computation, the biology of neurons and neural circuits, and the mind/brain, Feldman introduces specific demonstrations and formal models of such topics as how children learn their first words, words for abstract and metaphorical concepts, understanding stories, and grammar (including "hot-button" issues surrounding the innateness of human grammar). With this accessible, comprehensive book Feldman offers readers who want to understand how our brains create thought and language a theory of language that is intuitively plausible and also consistent with existing scientific data at all levels.

Book Start with Why

Download or read book Start with Why written by Simon Sinek and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2011-12-27 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspirational bestseller that ignited a movement and asked us to find our WHY Discover the book that is captivating millions on TikTok and that served as the basis for one of the most popular TED Talks of all time—with more than 56 million views and counting. Over a decade ago, Simon Sinek started a movement that inspired millions to demand purpose at work, to ask what was the WHY of their organization. Since then, millions have been touched by the power of his ideas, and these ideas remain as relevant and timely as ever. START WITH WHY asks (and answers) the questions: why are some people and organizations more innovative, more influential, and more profitable than others? Why do some command greater loyalty from customers and employees alike? Even among the successful, why are so few able to repeat their success over and over? People like Martin Luther King Jr., Steve Jobs, and the Wright Brothers had little in common, but they all started with WHY. They realized that people won't truly buy into a product, service, movement, or idea until they understand the WHY behind it. START WITH WHY shows that the leaders who have had the greatest influence in the world all think, act and communicate the same way—and it's the opposite of what everyone else does. Sinek calls this powerful idea The Golden Circle, and it provides a framework upon which organizations can be built, movements can be led, and people can be inspired. And it all starts with WHY.
