Book The Green Imperative Ecology and Ethics in Design and Architecture

Download or read book The Green Imperative Ecology and Ethics in Design and Architecture written by Victor Papanek and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2022-02-01 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh edition of the sustainable design pioneer Victor Papanek’s classic and ever-relevant book examining the important role of design in combating climate change. Whether it’s horror at the plastic littering the world’s beaches or despair at the melting polar ice caps, the world is gradually waking up to the impending climate disaster. In The Green Imperative, Papanek argues for design that addresses these issues head-on. This means using materials that can be recycled and reused, no more pointless packaging, thinking about how products make us feel and engage all our senses, putting nature at the heart of design, working at a smaller scale, rejecting aesthetics for their own sake, and thinking before we buy. First published at the end of the twentieth century, this book offered a plethora of honest advice, clear examples, and withering critiques, laying out the flaws of and opportunities for the design world at that time. A quarter of a century on, Papanek’s lucid prose has lost none of its verve, and the problems he highlights have only become more urgent, giving today’s reader both a fascinating historical perspective on the issues at hand and a blueprint for how they might be solved.

  • Pages : 354 pages

Download or read book Check written by Michael Burton and published by . This book was released on 2021-05 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Miles Norris, a retired computer salesman, has lost the will to live. Approaching 80 years of age, his wife taken by cancer, he was banished from an assisted living center in Florida because of violent behavior. Now his only son, Scott, is moving him, against his will, to the Better Life Spa, an expensive, state-of-the-art Alzheimer's center outside Washington, D.C. that claims to be able to provide all the care the old man could ever need--or so they think. Scott is unaware that the Better Life also operates a parallel business, a secret one, unrelated to healthcare. However, also like Scott, they too, the Better Life Spa, fail to appreciate that the old man that they have admitted to their facility, depressed and unresponsive, is much more than he appears. When the two forces collide, Miles Norris and The Better Life Spa, a violent game of human chess plays out. A fun rollercoaster of intrigue and revelations leads to one truth: there can be no stalemate or surrender in this contest. It will only end with checkmate. Amazon review, 5 stars, "James Bond in an Assisted Living Center" The lead character is really a 'geriatric James Bond'. As his skill set is unveiled the reader is lead to conclude there is more to this man than just another slightly confused patient in an assisted living facility. The action of this lead character is 'age appropriate' and not the fantasy of so many thriller/suspense characters. The epilogue is poignant and brings the reader full circle as one life has ended and another is beginning. This is the best crime/thriller book I have read in ages. It would make a wonderful movie. Tommy Lee Jones should play Miles Norris. I would pay to see that. Amazon Review, 5 stars, Gripping and thrilling spy mystery! Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2021 Verified Purchase I like spy thriller novels and this one kept my interest from the beginning. It's setting is in an assisted living center where you wouldn't expect to have such suspenseful drama take place. The author drew me in and built up the suspense till the very end. All the chess moves were intriguing. I highly recommend this novel.

Download or read book US of AA written by Joe Miller and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In US of AA, Miller shares the never-before-told story of how in the aftermath of prohibition America's top scientists helped launch a movement that would give rise to a multi-million-dollar treatment industry and a new government agency devoted to alcoholism that has made available millions of dollars for research. Despite the fact that this research showed that alcoholism is a complex disease requiring an array of treatment strategies, among which Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is one of the least effective, money continued to flow to treatment facilities using approaches similar to AA. Five years in the making, his brilliant, in-depth investigative reporting into the history, politics and science of alcoholism will show how AA became our nation's de facto treatment policy, even as evidence for more effective remedies accumulated. US of AA is a character-driven, beautifully written exposé, full of secrecy, irony, liquor industry money, the shrillest of scare tactics and, at its center, a grand deception. In the tradition of Crazy by Pete Earley, and David Goldhill's Catastrophic Care, US of AA shines a much-needed spotlight on the addiction treatment industry. It will forever change the way we think about the entire enterprise.

Book excerpt: As a pandemic and racial reckoning exposed society's faults, Christian thinkers were laying the groundwork for a better future. A public health and economic crisis provoked by Covid-19. A social crisis cracked open by the filmed murder of George Floyd. A leadership crisis laid bare as the gravity of a global pandemic met a country suffocating in political polarization and idolatry. In the spring of 2020 Comment and Plough magazines created a joint publishing project that would tap the resources of the Christian humanist tradition to respond collaboratively and imaginatively to these crises. This volume, written in real time during a year that revealed the depths of our society's fissures, provides a wealth of proposals and reflections on what should come after: how we can truly renew our civilization. Breaking Ground has grown into a network of institutions and people that will continue to respond to these ongoing challenges with a deeply Christian and human vision for the future. Book excerpt: The first book to present a comprehensive overview of postwar Japanese design For the Japanese, the concept of design is not limited to functionality or materiality--it is deeply connected with ancient culture and rituals. In this sense, a chair is much more than what you sit on, a cup more than what you drink from: these objects are to be reflected upon, to be touched and cherished. As mass manufacture became widespread in the post-war period, fascinating cross-cultural exchanges began to take place between Japan and the West. And in recent years, a new generation of designers has taken Japanese creativity into entirely new territory, reconceptualizing the very meaning of design. Showcasing over 80 designers, hundreds of objects, and contributions from both Japanese and Western designers inspired by Japan, this volume will remain the definitive work on the subject for many years to come.
