Download or read book Archive Fever written by Jacques Derrida and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a depository of civic record and social history whose very name derives from the Greek word for town hall, the archive would seem to be a public entity, yet it is stocked with the personal, even intimate, artifacts of private lives. It is this inherent tension between public and private which inaugurates, for Derrida, an inquiry into the human impulse to preserve, through technology as well as tradition, both a historical and a psychic past. What emerges is a marvelous expansive work, engaging at once Judaic mythos, Freudian psychoanalysis, and Marxist materialism in a profound reflection on the real, the unreal, and the virtual.

Book The Last Utopia

  • Author : Samuel Moyn
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2012-03-05
  • ISBN : 0674256522
  • Pages : 346 pages

Download or read book The Last Utopia written by Samuel Moyn and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-05 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human rights offer a vision of international justice that today’s idealistic millions hold dear. Yet the very concept on which the movement is based became familiar only a few decades ago when it profoundly reshaped our hopes for an improved humanity. In this pioneering book, Samuel Moyn elevates that extraordinary transformation to center stage and asks what it reveals about the ideal’s troubled present and uncertain future. For some, human rights stretch back to the dawn of Western civilization, the age of the American and French Revolutions, or the post–World War II moment when the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was framed. Revisiting these episodes in a dramatic tour of humanity’s moral history, The Last Utopia shows that it was in the decade after 1968 that human rights began to make sense to broad communities of people as the proper cause of justice. Across eastern and western Europe, as well as throughout the United States and Latin America, human rights crystallized in a few short years as social activism and political rhetoric moved it from the hallways of the United Nations to the global forefront. It was on the ruins of earlier political utopias, Moyn argues, that human rights achieved contemporary prominence. The morality of individual rights substituted for the soiled political dreams of revolutionary communism and nationalism as international law became an alternative to popular struggle and bloody violence. But as the ideal of human rights enters into rival political agendas, it requires more vigilance and scrutiny than when it became the watchword of our hopes.

Book Pelvic Floor Exercises for Erectile Dysfunction

Download or read book Pelvic Floor Exercises for Erectile Dysfunction written by Grace Dorey and published by Wiley. This book was released on 2003-11-21 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text reaches beyond the boundaries of mainstream physiotherapy into a novel area for physiotherapists and nurses. It provides information on the prevalence and risk factors for erectile dysfunction, the anatomy and physiology of normal erectile function and the role played by the pelvic floor muscles in men. A successful randomised controlled trial exploring pelvic floor muscle exercises and manometric biofeedback for both erectile dysfunction and post-micturition dribble is clearly reported. This is the first time that erectile dysfunction has been associated with post-micturition dribble due to poor pelvic floor musculature. The discussion covering each aspect of the trial adds knowledge to a poorly researched subject. This book provides professionals with first-line treatment guidance based on evidence for the well-being of men with erectile dysfunction and their partners. It should be of interest to all professionals working in the area of urology.

Download or read book New Sex Therapy written by Helen Singer Kaplan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1975. The last two decades have brought remarkable advances in our knowledge of human sexuality. These data are in the process of being assimilated into the main body of psychiatric thought, which is being greatly enriched thereby. Our increased understanding of sexuality is also currently being translated into innovative new approaches to the treatment of sexual difficulties. These developments promise relief to many persons with distressing sexual problems who were previously thought to be beyond help. At the present time, the specific approach to sex therapy described in this volume is being employed, further developed and, most important, systematically evaluated at the Sex Therapy and Education Program of the Payne Whitney Psychiatric Clinic of the Cornell University-New York Hospital Center. The Cornell program is psychiatrically oriented. It regards sex therapy as a specialized branch of psychotherapy. The Clinic conceives of sexual dysfunctions as psychosomatic symptoms and it’s orientation is multicausal and eclectic in that it believes that sexual dysfunctions are the product of multiple etiologic factors, and our treatment armamentarium comprises an amalgam of experiential, behavioral and dynamically oriented modalities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clinical practice related to sleep problems and sleep disorders has been expanding rapidly in the last few years, but scientific research is not keeping pace. Sleep apnea, insomnia, and restless legs syndrome are three examples of very common disorders for which we have little biological information. This new book cuts across a variety of medical disciplines such as neurology, pulmonology, pediatrics, internal medicine, psychiatry, psychology, otolaryngology, and nursing, as well as other medical practices with an interest in the management of sleep pathology. This area of research is not limited to very young and old patientsâ€"sleep disorders reach across all ages and ethnicities. Sleep Disorders and Sleep Deprivation presents a structured analysis that explores the following: Improving awareness among the general public and health care professionals. Increasing investment in interdisciplinary somnology and sleep medicine research training and mentoring activities. Validating and developing new and existing technologies for diagnosis and treatment. This book will be of interest to those looking to learn more about the enormous public health burden of sleep disorders and sleep deprivation and the strikingly limited capacity of the health care enterprise to identify and treat the majority of individuals suffering from sleep problems.
