Book Higher Education and Global Poverty

Download or read book Higher Education and Global Poverty written by Christopher S. Collins and published by Cambria Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is founded on several case studies which examine countries, including Thailand and Uganda, where impact analyses were done on World Bank loans dedicated to the expansion of higher education in science and technology. These two countries were chosen because they are in two different regions with dissimilar colonial histories and their loans are relatively recent. A case study on crossborder university partnerships also provides a model which other universities and development agencies may utilize when positioning higher education as a poverty reduction strategy. Delivering extensive frontline information on education, international development, and the challenges that follow, this book also includes a review of poverty reduction strategies as well as a theoretical framework that covers colonialism, development, and indigenous knowledge. This research conducted on the World Bank and the impact of its policies in two developing countries offers primary source information on work related to the topic. A major portion of the book looks at the effort put forth by U.S. universities in partnership with universities in developing countries for the purpose of using knowledge creation and dissemination as a poverty reduction strategy. The policy recommendations presented are useful for international development agencies like the World Bank, and the model demonstrated can be used by universities interested in cross-border partnerships across lines of economic development. This book will be invaluable to educational researchers, qualitative and ethnographic researchers, international development specialists, and scholars in international education.

Book Universities and Global Human Development

Download or read book Universities and Global Human Development written by Alejandra Boni and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes the case for a critical turn in development thinking around universities and their contributions in making a more equal post-2015 world. It puts forward a normative approach based on human development and the capability approach, one which can gain a hearing from policy, scholarship, and practitioners dealing with practical issues of understanding policy, democratising research and knowledge, and fostering student learning - all key university functions. The book argues that such an approach can elucidate development debates drawing on local, national and international issues and examples to show why higher education matters for sustainable development goals both in educational and social terms. It advocates a new arena of engagement with universities as key sites of development and freedoms beyond human capital and challenges development omissions and gaps around university education. The book explores how the human development approach addresses the following core ideas: the meaning of well-being, the idea of agency, participation and democratic citizenship, how to address inequalities, the relation between local and global, and the idea of equitable partnerships. This book is addressed to researchers and postgraduate students in development studies, university education, the capability approach and human development community.

This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global development community has articulated many collective aspirations in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aimed at transforming the world. Given the complicated issues that accompany globalization, State and non-State actors continue to explore the utility of public-private cooperation mechanisms. Public- private cooperation initiatives strive for global governance mechanisms involving oversight by all of the actors and operating frameworks that include multiple states, intergovernmental organizations, NGOs, private sector companies and prominent individuals. This book examines global public-private initiatives which attempt to form new institutions to achieve cooperation objectives in contrast to traditional PPP models which rely on contract arrangements between governments and service providers. Students of these initiatives from many interconnected disciplines, including law, finance, international relations and governance will find this introduction to this growing field of development cooperation timely and informative.
