Book A Thousand Blunders

Download or read book A Thousand Blunders written by Frank Leonard and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Thousand Blunders, Frank Leonard looks at why the 'Road of a Thousand Wonders' failed to live up to the expectations forecast by company president Charles M. Hays and other senior managers. Not only was the railway built through a sparsely settled region, which generated little immediate traffic, but its economic difficulties were also compounded by the numerous mistakes made by managers at all levels: for example, their failure to respond adequately to labour shortages caused serious delays and prevented the company from proving Prince Rupert as an effective alternative harbour before World War I broke out. For this book, Frank Leonard had access to a wealth of original documents, among them the GTP legal department files, providing him with insights into the decisions that formed the basis for policies in townsites and on Indian reserves. A Thousand Blunders is a provocative account of one of the greatest failures in Canadian entrepreneurial history. Richly detailed and thoroughly documented, it makes an important contribution to the fields of railway and business history, as well as to the study of the history of northern British Columbia.

Book Enterprise Learning in Action

Download or read book Enterprise Learning in Action written by Dale Shuttleworth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-11-01 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over a decade the education and employment systems of western industrialized countries have had to adapt to the changes brought about by the post-industrial age. The recession of the early 1990s has led the education and business communities increasingly to look for ways to co-operate in preparing young people and unemployed workers for a new social and economic order. Enterprise learning in action draws on case studies in community and enterprise learning from around the world to show how young people and the unemployed can be taught the enterprise skills which will enable them to survive in an uncertain world. Dale E.Shuttleworth looks in particular at how this can be done outside the formal school system and within the community in ways which are responsive to the particular needs of each locality. His message is overall one of great optimism for a future in which those who are at present rejected by the system can become active and valued contributors. Enterprise learning in action will appeal to all students and researchers from primary through to adult education and to those in local economic development.

Book Canada s Community Colleges

Download or read book Canada s Community Colleges written by John D. Dennison and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community colleges evolved in Canada during the "golden years" of educational innovation between 1960 and 1975. A diversity of factors - historical, socio-economic, political and educational - contributed to the development of college systems with distinctive goals and structures. This book is the first up-to-date and comprehensive study of a potent national educational and social phenomenon, largely unknown and largely unappreciated. The authors describe provincial and territorial college systems as they have evolved to 1985, discussing problems particular to each system and evaluating the extent to which often idealistic early goals have been realized. They identify key issues which are critical to the future of these systems and which, if ignored, will undermine community college education across Canada. These include accessibility, identity, relations with governments, management and leadership, and evaluation and accountability. In each case the authors draw upon their own expertise and experience to describe directions for resolution of these issues. The book contains a comprehensive and topical bibliography of both published and unpublished material related to many aspects of Canadian community college development. It also includes a French language bibliography. Unique in many aspects, this book is designed to interest both graduate and undergraduate students in adult and higher education and administration as well as those directly involved in community colleges, government education ministries and a broad lay public.

Book The Royal Prerogative and Constitutional Law

Download or read book The Royal Prerogative and Constitutional Law written by Noel Cox and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-31 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the royal prerogative in terms of its theory, history and application today. The work explores the development of the royal prerogative through the evolution of imperial government, and more recent structural changes in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in the Commonwealth. While examining specific prerogative powers, the development of justiciability of the prerogative, and the exercise of the prerogative, it lays bare the heart of constitutionality in the Westminster system of government. There is said to be a black hole of unaccountable authority at the heart of the constitution and it is this which this book examines. The focus is upon the constitutional development of the United Kingdom and the old dominions of Canada, Australia and New Zealand. This approach is comparative and historical, using specific case studies of such events as the dissolution of Parliament and the appointment and dismissal of Prime Ministers. The book will be of interest to academics and researchers working in the areas of Constitutional Law and Politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As late as the beginning of the nineteenth century, despite the many years of direct contact with European traders and the influx of European goods, most African societies still produced their own iron and its products, or obtained them from neighbouring communities through local trade. The quality of iron products was such that, despite competition from European imports, local iron production survived into the early twentieth century in some parts of the continent. The production process covered prospecting, mining, smelting, and forging. Different types of ore were available all over the continent and were extracted by shallow or alluvial mining. A variety of skills were required for building furnaces, producing charcoal, smelting, and forging iron into goods. Iron production was generally not an enclave activity but a process that fulfilled the totality of socio-economic needs. It also fit the gender division of labour within communities.
