Book University of Pennsylvania in Its Relations to the State of Pennsylvania Classic Reprint

Download or read book University of Pennsylvania in Its Relations to the State of Pennsylvania Classic Reprint written by Samuel Whitaker Pennypacker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-23 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University of Pennsylvania in Its Relations to the State of Pennsylvania The settlement of Pennsylvania being due to the unrest of the members of a religious sect whose advanced thought brought them into conflict with existing conditions in Eng land, and the moral and mental breadth of its founder having led him to offer it as a home, not only for those of his own way of thinking, but for all in that island and upon the Continent who had in vain wrestled against intolerance, it was but natural that his province should attract more men of learning than other colonies whose promoters were simply seeking for profit, or were bent upon the enforcement of illiberal policies. Therefore it came about that among the early colonists of Pennsylvania were an unusual number of men of scholarly attainments, some of Whom had been doughty champions upon one side or the other in the po lemical warfare then being everywhere waged, a struggle necessary for, and preparatory to, the establishment of the principle that humanity is capable of governing itself. Penn, the founder of a successful State and a practical legislator whose work has stood the test of time, as well as the most conspicuous figure among the colonizers of America, was a student of Oxford University and a profuse Writer of books of verse, travel, doctrine, and controversy, which made a strong impress upon the thought of his time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University of Pennsylvania, 1740-1893: The History of the University and Its Present Work The Wharton School and the School of American His tory represent each a new idea in American education. The former was founded as an experiment in the education of busi ness men, and as a preliminary to the law, journalism or public life and has eminently justified the foresight of its founder. It recognizes the need for a broader preparation than has usually been given in the fields just mentioned, especially that of gen eral business. The quality of work done in the school is best shown in two volumes, one on The Development of American Industries, prepared and published by the Class of 1891, and the valuable work on Philadelphia and its Government, which has just been published by the Class of 1893. The school's success is also seen in the places held by its graduates, and the high praise accorded it by such a body as the American Bankers' Association. The special Work of the school is done in the Junior and Senior years. An excellent library in economics, history, and public law is owned by the school. In the year 1689, only seven years after the foundation of Philadelphia, a public school was established in this city, by members of the Society of Friends, which was 1ncorporated in 1697, and after undergoing various changes in its organization, re ceived, in 1711, a final charter from William Penn. Pif teen discreet and religious persons, of the people called Quakers, were constituted a Board of Overseers, and were vested with all the property and privileges of the corpora tion, together with the right of supplying vacancies in their own numbers George Keith, a native of Aberdeen, a man of learning, and famous in the history of the Friends, was the first teacher employed. In the school were taught the Latin language, the Mathematics, and the rudiments of an English education. Though supported by funds derived from the Society of Friends, and under the exclusive direc tion of members of that society, it was open indiscriminate ly to individuals of all religious denominations and for more than sixty years, continued to be the only public place of instruction m the province. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address Before the Alumni of the University of Pennsylvania Gentlemen of the Alumni Association: On Dr. Franklin's return from his most brilliant visit to Europe, where for eight years he had been the companion of princes and nobles, of philosophers and wits, - the inmate of a Court, even in its decay, the most fascinating and luxurious the modern world had ever seen, the following entry appears to have been made in his Diary: "Wednesday, September 14, 1785. With the flood-tide in the morning came a light breeze, which brought us above Glocester Point, and then we saw Dear Philadelphia." This is my text to-night, 'Dear Philadelphia;' the home of our nativity, of our education, of our school and college days - of our manhood and active life; whose modest charms, simple and unobtrusive in every sense, are more interwoven in our fancy than we are aware of; whose resources, physical and intellectual, we enjoy half the time without appreciating them; whose honors any one may be proud to share; - in short, this City of ours, with its claims, especially in relation to mental culture and high education, is a theme which, in a spirit of honest and manly self-complacency, I think well worth illustration. Especially is it so at the hands of those who have met together as children of an Institution of learning so venerable and so beneficent as this. For self-complacency I have no apologies to make. I am speaking to Philadelphians of Philadelphia; and my wish is to utter some words that may invigorate the sentiment of local pride which is a community's surest reliance. There is no one amongst us, who has ever bestowed a serious thought on the subject, that does not feel, - strangers have discovered it, and we may as well confess it, - that the defect of our character is a habit of mutual and self-disparagement. We are not true to each other. We are not loyal to our home. We have allowed other parts of the country to boast us into silence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University of Pennsylvania: Its History, Influence, Equipment and Characteristics; With Biographical Sketches and Portraits of Founders, Benefactors, Officers and Alumni Much has been done since, by the publishers of college books and journals, and specially by the issue of college histories by the Bureau, to disseminate this information. These results have been increased by the multiplication of alumni associations. But all that has been done does not set forth the needs which remain, which your plan will so far meet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University of Pennsylvania Library Chronicle, 1937, Vol. 5 It is timely for us to remember today that Penn's Frame of Government for Pennsylvania laid down the doctrine, revolutionary then, that Governments rather depend upon men than men upon governments, but with all this idealism he was exceedingly practical although he had never had any experience in business. He was a good organizer and prob ably the greatest real estate salesman in history. He wrote with his own hand a pamphlet advertising the advantages of Pennsylvania, which was spread far and wide in translations into Dutch, German, and French. He wanted solid, trained, equipped colonists, and this pamphlet brought them by the thousands and tens of thousands. As a result, Pennsylvanialand was not held in large blocks, as in Virginia and Ne York. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University of Pennsylvania: Official Guide To acquaint the members of the Student Guides' Association, and others, with the physical equipment and resources of the University of Pennsylvania, and to assist the students and friends of the University in escorting visitors through the institution, the editor prepared, in 1904, a pamphlet descriptive of the principal buildings and objects of interest, which was the first edition of this Guide Book. The present edition is illustrated and has been greatly enlarged. It is hoped that the book will prove itself invaluable to all who may have occasion to use it. The editor is indebted to many officers of the University for the assistance given him in the preparation of this edition, and is under obligation to Rev. Oliver Huckel, Mr. J. Hartley Merrick and Mr. Joseph G. Rosengarten for material on portraits owned by the University; and to Prof. Warren P. Laird, the Deans, and other officers who revised the material on their respective departments. The illustrations are from the large collection of negatives made for the University by the editor. No attempt has been made to give an exhaustive historical account of the University, to include any historical illustrations, or to give a detailed description of each of the departments and the buildings connected therewith. The primary object of the Guide is to acquaint the public with the present resources of the University. Those wishing detailed information on the courses and various departments are referred to the general catalogues and departmental publications, and those desirous of looking up the historical development or any phase of University history or college life are referred to the list of publications printed in the appendix to this edition. This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorial to the Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania American Medical and Surgical Journal, as long ago as the year 1826. He believes that his representations on the subject, coupled with the fact of his having taught the Institutes of Medicine for some years, in the course of summer instruction in the Medical Institute of Philadelphia, had a no small share of influence in inducing the Board of Trustees of the University to agree to the proposal of Dr. Chapman, that the latter should be allowed an assistant, whose duties were to consist in lecturing on this branch. A great step was thus made towards the creation of a separate chair of the Institutes of Medicine.* While supporting the just interests of your institution, the undersigned has not withheld his friendly criticism on what he believed to be wrong in its course. His frankness in this way may have been displeasing to the Medical Faculty, as conflicting with its notions of temporary expediency and pliant policy. Be this as it may, he cannot abandon, at once, his early habit of watchful regard for the prosperity of the University, nor with hold some remarks and suggestions to your honourable body, of a tenor similar to that in which he would have spoken to his colleagues of the Faculty, if he had been made one of its members.
