Book University of California Publications in Philosophy Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book University of California Publications in Philosophy Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by University Of California and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-05 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University of California Publications in Philosophy, Vol. 1 The second meaning of 'good' is 'desired.' Whatever we wish for, is in so far good' in this signification of the term, which is likewise very common and should no more be criticised than the actually current signification of any other term in gen eral use. It may also be pointed out that it is quite possible to reconcile the definition of 'good' as 'pleasant' and that of 'good' as desired, ' by referring to the psychological fact that What is pleasant is generally also desired. Now Whether we say that a thing is good just because it is pleasant, or whether we say that the pleasant thing is good' because as pleasant it is desired, is, as we have already indicated, to be decided only by an arbitrary choice in favor of one or other of the two possible definitions. Personally I must confess that I prefer to merge the first meaning of 'good' as 'pleasant' into the second meaning of it as 'desired, ' for the reason that the second can easily be made to include the first by reference to the psychological fact just stated. Thus our list of the various meanings of the term is shortened, and we get a more comprehensive conception, including both the 'pleasant, ' because what is pleasant is desired, and also things not pleasant which may likewise be desired. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Philosophy, Vol. 1 IN these times, when knowledge of all sorts is making such general progress, and science continually open ing further discoveries in nature, and also the means of practically applying them, it doubly imports that the moral progress - the progress of the mind - sh ould be equally attended to. I say, doubly; for first, the mind, as mind, is of most consequence, and that that therefore should be set in a state to take right views and form just conclusions, is the primary concern; for did not the mind first conceive, no action at all would follow, and where it conceives erroneously, ill effects result: secondly, therefore, when knowledge begins to enlighten mankind, and science, as now, to put power into their hands, by enabling them to lay hold, as it were, on the elements, -to use, and in some de gree, command them, - it is of vital importance that the directing mind should be enlarged with that increase of power. It would be dreadful, indeed, if the power were increased, but the mind not at the B. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Stoicism written by John Sellars and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-05 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first introduction to Stoic philosophy for 30 years. Aimed at readers new to Stoicism and to ancient philosophy, it outlines the central philosophical ideas of Stoicism and introduces the reader to the different ancient authors and sources that they will encounter when exploring Stoicism. The range of sources that are drawn upon in the reconstruction of Stoic philosophy can be bewildering for the beginner. Sellars guides the reader through the surviving works of the late Stoic authors, Seneca and Epictetus, and the fragments relating to the early Stoics found in authors such as Plutarch and Stobaeus. The opening chapter offers an introduction to the ancient Stoics, their works, and other ancient authors who report material about ancient Stoic philosophy. The second chapter considers how the Stoics themselves conceived philosophy and how they structured their own philosophical system. Chapters 3-5 offer accounts of Stoic philosophical doctrines arranged according to the Stoic division of philosophical discourse into three parts: logic, physics, and ethics. The final chapter considers the later impact of Stoicism on Western philosophy. At the end of the volume there is a detailed guide to further reading.

Book Knowing Words

Download or read book Knowing Words written by Lisa Raphals and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-05 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the Greeks, the craft of Odysseus and the wisdom of Athena were examples of metis, an elusive cast of mind that ranged from wisdom and forethought to craft and cunning. Although it informed many aspects of Greek society, metis was all but absent from the language of Greek philosophy. Invoking Indigenous Chinese debates, Lisa Raphals here examines the role and significance of metic intelligence in classical Chinese philosophy, literature, history, and military strategy. Raphals first examines the range of meanings of the Chinese word zhi. As with the Greek metis, the uses of zhi include "wisdom, " "knowledge, " "intelligence, " "skill, " "cleverness, " and "cunning." Drawing on parallels between the two traditions, she argues that, in China as in Greece, metic intelligence tacitly informed many aspects of cultural and social life. In China, these included views of the nature of knowledge and language, standards of personal and social morality, and theories of military strategy and statecraft. After surveying representative texts from the Warring States period, Raphals considers the function of metic intelligence as the dominant quality of central characters in two novels from the Ming dynasty, the Romance of Three Kingdoms and Journey to the West. Finally, she compares the treatment of themes of heroism and recognition in the Chinese and Greek narrative traditions. Knowing Words will be welcomed by sinologists, classicists, and scholars of comparative philosophy and literature.

Book A History of the Problems of Philosophy Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of the Problems of Philosophy Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Paul Janet and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Problems of Philosophy, Vol. 1 These characteristics are conspicuous in our bearing towards the History of philosophy, as well as other universal undertakings. We can boast of no serious attempt at presenting in rational order the great systems of philosophy, which are the successive exponents of the main stages of Western civilization. We have written text-books for students, and some very competent and illuminating monographs on individual thinkers. But there has been no attempt at the effective co - ordination of these, nor have we sought to give effect to the conviction that philosophy is, in truth, a continuous endeavour, and the reflection of a continuous experience. And yet one has to go but a little way in philosophy to realize that its great systems can be interpreted only in their context, and its problems effectively handled only through their history. We have to go back to the past not merely because here, as elsewhere, we require the help of earlier thinkers so as to start from their results, but because philosophy must reflect life. It is the exposition of experience. It is experience itself breaking out into explicitness, blossoming into clear consciousness, comprehending itself - at least to some extent. And experience always garners its past into its present: what it is can be discovered only by laying out what it has been, by following the steps of its self-articulating, self-concreting process. Both on account of the bearing of philosophy upon life, and of the history of philosophy upon philosophy itself, one may say that a competent account of its great systems is the most urgent desideratum of English reflective thought at the present time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rollo Philosophy, Vol. 1 The main design in view, in the discussions which are offered to the juvenile world, under the title of The Rollo Philosophy, relates rather to their effect upon the little reader's habits of thinking, reasoning, and observation, than to the additions they may make to his stock of knowledge. The benefit which the author intends that the reader shall derive from them, is an influence on the cast of his intellectual character, which is receiving its permanent form during the years to which these writings are adapted. The acquisition of knowledge, however, though in this case a secondary, is by no means an unimportant object; and the discussion of the several topics proceeds accordingly, with regularity, upon a certain system of classification. Book Pragmatism Old And New

Download or read book Pragmatism Old And New written by Susan Haack and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2011-02-10 with total page 741 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Morris R. Cohen once described pragmatism as "a philosophy for people who cannot think"; and Bertrand Russell feared that pragmatism would lead philosophy into "cosmic impiety." Nothing could be further from the truth. Pragmatism was one of the most fruitful philosophical movements of the late nineteenth century, and has continued to be a significant influence on some of the major figures in philosophy - F. P. Ramsey, W. V. Quine, Sidney Hook, Nelson Goodman, Hilary Putnam, and many others.Today some even speak of a remarkable renaissance of pragmatism. Very often, though, what they have in mind is not the rich heritage of the classical pragmatist tradition, but a radical self-styled neo-pragmatism that has of late transmuted the reformist aspirations of classical pragmatism into a kind of revolutionary anti-intellectualism - a radical neo-pragmatism that seems to confirm Russell''s worst fears.Asking what we can learn from the older pragmatist tradition, and what we can salvage from the intellectual shipwreck of the new, Susan Haack, with the assistance of Robert Lane, has put together a wide-ranging anthology that tells the story of the evolution of pragmatism from its origins in C. S. Peirce''s hopes of making philosophy more scientific and William James''s of "unstiffening our theories," to the radical literary-political neo-pragmatism recently popularized by Richard Rorty. Opening with a history of pragmatism from its inception to the present day, and closing with Haack''s famous "interview" with Peirce and Rorty, the book presents a broad and diverse selection of pragmatist writings - classical and contemporary, reformist and revolutionary - on logic, metaphysics, theory of inquiry, philosophy of mind, philosophy of religion, aesthetics, philosophy of education, and moral, social, and political philosophy.

Download or read book Dark Nature written by Richard Schneider and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Ecological Thought, eco-philosopher Timothy Morton has argued for the inclusion of “dark ecology” in our thinking about nature. Dark ecology, he argues, puts hesitation, uncertainty, irony, and thoughtfulness back into ecological thinking.” The ecological thought, he says, should include “negativity and irony, ugliness and horror.” Focusing on this concept of “dark ecology” and its invitation to add an anti-pastoral perspective to ecocriticism, this collection of essays on American literature and culture offers examples of how a vision of nature’s darker side can create a fuller understanding of humanity’s relation to nature. Included are essays on canonical American literature, on new voices in American literature, and on non-print American media. This is the first collection of essays applying the “dark ecology” principle to American literature.
