Book excerpt: Excerpt from University of California Publications in American Archaeology and Ethnology, 1919-1920, Vol. 16 While pursuing other investigations among the Miwok Indians of the Sierra Nevada region during the summer of: 1906, I incidentally secured the following Short series of myths. These are presented without exhaustive study, just as they were obtained from certain Mariposa, or Southern Sierra, Miwok informants. The investigations I refer to formed part of the work of the Archaeological and Ethno logical Survey of California, conducted by the University of California through the munificence of Mrs. Phoebe A. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University of California Publications in American Archaeology and Ethnology, 1919-1922, Vol. 15 The Ifugaos are a tribe of barbarian head-hunters. Nevertheless, after living among them for a period of eight years, I am fully satisfied that never, even before our government was established over them, was the loss of life from violence of all descriptions nearly so great among them as it is among ourselves. I do not, however, wish to be under stood as advocating their state of society as ideal, or as in any way affording more than a few suggestions possibly to our own law-makers. Given dentists and physicians, however, I doubt gravely if any society in existence could afford so much advantage in the way of happiness and true freedom as does that of the Ifugaos. But we must realize that probably neither security of the individual life nor even happiness are the chief ends of existence. The progress and evolution of our people are much more important in all prob ability, and this seems to demand the sacrifice of ease and freedom and of much happiness on the part of the individuals composing our society. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University of California Publications in American Archaeology and Ethnology, 1911-1916, Vol. 2 It has been thought sufficient, considering the treatment already given the Hupa language, to provide descriptions of the individual sounds occurring in Kato, illustrated as fully as pos sible with tracings; and to list the morphological elements, accompanying each with a few examples. This has been done with the expectation that the chief use made of the work would be comparative. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Destroy the Copy Plaster Cast Collections in the 19th 20th Centuries

Download or read book Destroy the Copy Plaster Cast Collections in the 19th 20th Centuries written by Annetta Alexandridis and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-09-05 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on two international conferences held at Cornell University and the Freie Universität of Berlin in 2010 and 2015, this volume is the first ever to explicitly address the destruction of plaster cast collections of ancient Mediterranean and Western sculpture. Focusing on Europe, the Americas, and Japan, art historians, archaeologists and a literary scholar discuss how different museum and academic traditions – national as well as disciplinary –, notions of value and authenticity, or colonialism impacted the fate of collections. The texts offer detailed documentation of degrees of destruction by spectacular acts of defacement, demolition, discarding, or neglect. They also shed light on the accompanying discourses regarding aesthetic ideals, political ideologies, educational and scholarly practices, or race. With destruction being understood as a critical part of reception, the histories of cast collections defy the traditional, homogenous narrative of rise and decline. Their diverse histories provide critical evidence for rethinking the use and display of plaster cast collections in the contemporary moment.
