Book excerpt: In this study I focus on whether the media has any effect on victim-blaming in the universities setting. I looked particularly at Ivy league universities due to their prestige. I focus on how they handled the assault, the language used by the media for the perpetrator and the survivor. In this study the university that I studied were Duke University, Vanderbilt University, and Stanford University. I used a critical content to analysis to find emerging themes throughout national newspapers, The New York Times and USA Today. I also looked at the student newspaper for each university. My findings concluded that the media framed the stories in favor of the perpetrator giving them a certain credibility While, they framed their language to dehumanize the survivor.

Beyond Blurred Lines traces ways that sexual violence is collectively processed, mediated, negotiated, and contested by exploring public reactions to high-profile incidents and rape narratives in popular culture. The concept of rape culture was initially embraced in popular media – mass media, social media, and popular culture – and contributed to a social understanding of sexual violence that mirrored feminist concerns about the persistence of rape myths and victim-blaming. However, it was later challenged by skeptics who framed the concept as a moral panic. Nickie D. Phillips documents how the conversation shifted from substantiating claims of a rape culture toward growing scrutiny of the prevalence of sexual assault on college campuses. This, in turn, renewed attention toward false allegations, and away from how college enforcement policies fail victims to how they endanger accused young men. Ultimately, she successfully lends insight into how the debates around rape culture, including microaggressions, gendered harassment and so-called political correctness, inform our collective imaginations and shape our attitudes toward criminal justice and policy responses to sexual violence.

With the high competition and the constant deadline pressure, reporters are usually pressured to talk to the subjects of these traumatic accidents too soon to publish their stories. This in turn leaves limited room for them to think about how this coverage is affecting their interviewees. This study aims to examine the impact of the media's coverage of sexual assault on the victims/survivors of the assault themselves. Media outlets often follow stories of sexual violence, tackling a lot of their details yet, it is unclear whether the interaction with journalists or the frames used in this coverage do more harm or good to the subjects of the assault cases in the Egyptian context. Before answering that, a content analysis on three highly popular Egyptian sexual assault cases is conducted to identify the main frames used in the media while reporting assault. Moreover, interviews with journalists are done to discuss the measures and approaches they take while covering these stories. Afterwards, interviews with survivors of sexual assault and activists working on the cause are conducted to reveal why they seek the media, their feelings after the media exposure, the main issues with the media coverage, and so forth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to observe how the framing of rape and sexual assault within The New York Times has changed from 1980 to 2020. To achieve this study, I conducted a content analysis of 150 New York Times articles divided into three separate time periods and taking 50 randomized articles from each timeframe. The first data set was taken from 1980-84 to provide a baseline to work from. The second set is from 1993-97 to encompass significant legislative changes about sexual violence. The final data set is from 2016-2020 and provides the most recent conversation about rape and sexual assault within the news publication. The importance of the specific time periods is that they each coincide with a noticeable cultural shift in society regarding sexual violence. My coding focused on four main categories that included; the presence of rape myths and stereotypes, who was quoted first, episodic and thematic framing and semantic framing. This study shows that the framing of rape and sexual assault within The New York Times has made some significant changes since the 1980s that indicate greater insight into the complexities of sexual violence. However, this study also highlights the areas that could use improvement such as increased victim blaming attitudes and the lack of representation for certain victim groups. To better understand why accurate representation about rape and sexual assault is so important, we first need to examine the different power structures involved, what rape myths and stereotypes are, and the influential role that mass media framing plays in shaping public discourse. It is important to observe the way that news organizations represent sex crimes, perpetrators and victims since the media can be crucial in shaping public beliefs about rape and sexual assault which can result in significant repercussions for victims and society as a whole.
