Book British University Libraries

Download or read book British University Libraries written by Toby Burrows and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-05 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British university libraries face major financial, technological, and organizational challenges. Cuts in funding, the spread of new technology, and changes to the provision of university education as a whole are combining to fundamentally alter the circumstances in which university libraries operate. This book, first published in 1989, provides a thorough understanding of the major trends that have emerged during the past decade and projects them into the future to assess their likely effect over the next few years. By focusing on the most important developments in the areas of finance, staffing, collections, services, automation, and relations with other libraries, author Toby Burrows exposes the forces that threaten the very nature of the British university library. The changes affecting British universities as a whole are also analysed since these broad influences have been a major cause of change in libraries and are essential to an understanding of that change. The future of the British university library depends on its ability to clearly articulate a coherent vision of its own future; this book takes a crucial step toward this goal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Geddes was incontestably a man of great learning and independence of mind and his work as a pioneer of modern biblical scholarship is one of the greatest historical importance' (J.G. Macgregor). Yet the work of this eighteenth-century scholar is largely unknown today, though his name is often linked with the 'fragment hypothesis' of Pentateuchal composition which he initiated and which was developed by Vater. But perhaps his most significant contribution is in the field of mythology at the moment when J.G. Eichhorn was himself engaged in this development. Making full use of contemporary sources, and drawing upon hitherto unpublished material, Dr Fuller writes the first full-scale study of this remarkable man who with courage, not unmixed with rashness, stood almost alone in his endeavours to introduce principles of literary and historical criticism into Bible study in Britain.

Book The Academic Library and Its Users

Download or read book The Academic Library and Its Users written by Peter Jordan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The many recent changes in higher and further education mean that it is more important than ever to analyse the needs of academic library users, and both promote and provide the service they require. This constructive book, pervaded throughout by the impact of IT on the learning environment, surveys the influences on today's academic library, and explains how to increase user satisfaction through quality management. The author focuses particularly on users' behaviour in the library, the problems they cause or encounter, and how libraries cope. The book examines the varying needs of undergraduate and graduate, mature and part-time students, overseas students, franchised students, distance learners and other groups with special needs, explaining ways in which these needs can be identified and the service evaluated. One chapter is devoted to research and researchers' information demands. The particular requirements of subject communities and their consequences for academic libraries are also investigated, as well as the requirements of teaching staff and ways in which the library can work with them. The author emphasizes the importance of user education programmes and explains how to promote the library effectively with limited resources. For librarians, heads of services and senior library managers in further and higher education, and those, such as subject librarians, responsible for specific student groups, this book provides a comprehensive and realistic guide to providing and promoting a quality service. Students of librarianship and information management will gain valuable insight from this book into user analysis and improving the performance of information provision.

Book Two Centuries of British Symphonism

Download or read book Two Centuries of British Symphonism written by Jürgen Schaarwächter and published by Georg Olms Verlag. This book was released on 2015-02-27 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Only in relatively recent times has any real attention been given to British symphonies. So a comprehensive survey, showing what exists and how the situation in the United Kingdom developed, from the beginnings in the 18th century until well into the 20th century, is long overdue. The preliminary survey presented here shows how a British symphonic identity gradually took shape over more than a century, through influences from abroad and, at home, enterprising attempts to find new ways of expression. By the end of the 19th century, British symphonists had produced an impressive body of work, yet only with the appearance of Elgar’s two symphonies in the following decade did this flourishing school find a champion of international renown. In this publication, light is shone on those works that have to some extent been overshadowed, as well as on those that have remained unpublished or unperformed. The result is a multi-faceted panorama of British symphonism, offering many insights into the composers’ thinking and their socio-cultural contexts. A comprehensive catalogue of all known works and an extensive bibliography invite readers to delve further into the subject.
