Book Governance of the Third Mission at a Multi Campus University

Download or read book Governance of the Third Mission at a Multi Campus University written by Benjamin Robert Schiller and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-12 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book appeals to higher education scholars from various disciplines and practitioners looking for an overview and in-depth insight into cooperative study programs (CSPs). The CSPs combine elements of higher education with elements of professional work and illustrate how a teaching-related third mission achieves a socioeconomic contribution through its underlying stakeholder interactions. In Germany, CSPs are a growing phenomenon and, at the same time, a niche in higher education with approximately 100,000 students. Higher education scholars identified CSPs a challenge to higher education governance despite the simultaneous lack of empirical data. In this vein, this book pursues the question of how stakeholders influence the governance of the third mission in the case of CSPs. The study in this book refers to the “prime” example of CSPs at a German university of applied sciences—the Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University. The analysis revealed that four stakeholder groups are salient and influence the governance of the CSPs. These include professors, industry representatives, students, and representatives of government and higher education policy.

Book Leading America s Branch Campuses

Download or read book Leading America s Branch Campuses written by Samuel Schuman and published by R&L Education. This book was released on 2009-06-16 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Branch campuses are a growing and vital segment of the American higher education community. But these campuses, and the particular challenges of leading them, have received far less attention than other types of institutions. Leading America's Branch Campuses remedies this by providing focused, pragmatic advice, by experienced branch campus professionals, across a very broad range of leadership issues. These include areas such as curriculum, system relations, fund raising, student affairs, athletics, public relations, faculty issues, communication (internal and external), program creation, strategic planning, campus organization and assessment. Chapter contributors include campus presidents/chancellors, provosts, deans, program directors and faculty members. They represent two-year, baccalaureate and graduate institutions, and span the nation, from Florida to Washington State. Dr. Schuman's style is direct and jargon-free, and he emphasizes practical issues more than abstract theories.

Book A Third University Is Possible

Download or read book A Third University Is Possible written by la paperson and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Third University is Possible unravels the intimate relationship between the more than 200 US land grant institutions, American settler colonialism, and contemporary university expansion. Author la paperson cracks open uncanny connections between Indian boarding schools, Black education, and missionary schools in Kenya; and between the Department of Homeland Security and the University of California. Central to la paperson’s discussion is the “scyborg,” a decolonizing agent of technological subversion. Drawing parallels to Third Cinema and Black filmmaking assemblages, A Third University is Possible ultimately presents new ways of using language to develop a framework for hotwiring university “machines” to the practical work of decolonization. Forerunners: Ideas First is a thought-in-process series of breakthrough digital publications. Written between fresh ideas and finished books, Forerunners draws on scholarly work initiated in notable blogs, social media, conference plenaries, journal articles, and the synergy of academic exchange. This is gray literature publishing: where intense thinking, change, and speculation take place in scholarship.

Download or read book The Pursuit of Knowledge written by Richard C. Atkinson and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2007-04-26 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard C. Atkinson’s eight-year tenure as president of the University of California (1995–2003) reflected the major issues facing California itself: the state’s emergence as the world’s leading knowledge-based economy and the rapidly expanding size and diversity of its population. As this selection of President Atkinson’s speeches and papers reveals, his administration was marked by innovative approaches that deliberately shaped U.C.’s role in this changing California. These writings tell the story of the national controversy over the SAT and Atkinson’s successful challenge to the dominance of the seventy-five-year-old college entrance examination. They also highlight other issues with national significance: U.C.’s experiments with race-neutral admissions programs; the challenges facing academic libraries and the University’s pioneering activities with the California Digital Library; and the University’s involvement in new paradigms of industry-university research. Together, these speeches and papers open a window on an eventful period in the history of the nation’s leading public research university and the history of American higher education.

Book Reawakening the Public Research University

Download or read book Reawakening the Public Research University written by Renée Beville Flower and published by University of California eScholarship. This book was released on 2014-03-28 with total page 647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A core institution in the human endeavor—the public research university—is in transition. As U.S. public universities adapt to a multi-decadal decline in public funding, they risk losing their essential character as a generator, evaluator, and archivist of ideas and as a wellspring of tomorrow’s intellectual, economic, and political leaders. This book explores the core interdependent and coevolving structures of the research university: its physical domain (buildings, libraries, classrooms), administration (governance and funding), and intellectual structures (curricula and degree programs). It searches the U.S. history of the public research university to identify its essential qualities, and generates recommendations that identify the crucial roles of university administration, state government and federal government.
