This book was released on 1989-01-01T00:00:00+01:00 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Milton Santos A Pioneer in Critical Geography from the Global South

Download or read book Milton Santos A Pioneer in Critical Geography from the Global South written by Lucas Melgaço and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-08 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, Milton Santos (1926-2001) has been considered one of the most influential thinkers in Brazilian and Latin American social sciences and geography. Yet his writings, most of which have not been translated into English, are largely unknown to European and North American audiences. This book introduces English-speaking scholars to Professor Santos through critical engagement with his ideas and writings. The chapters presented here reveal the breadth and originality of his critical thought, as well as its ongoing importance to contemporary debates. The book features a biography of Santos and includes an annotated translation of one of his most-cited texts, The Return of the Territory, offered here for the first time in English. This text demonstrates how Santos’s provocative insights continue to transform core concepts of political and human geography. The book also includes a number of short chapters written by scholars from Brazil, Spain and France. Through reflections on Santos’s work, the various authors demonstrate the value and possibilities of extending the geographer’s theories. They explore key geographical themes across political economy, rural studies, territorial planning, environmental crisis, digital networks, indigenous peoples, transportation and public health. This collection invites geographers from around the world to engage with this rich intellectual tradition from Brazil.

Book Popular Housing and Urban Land Tenure in the Middle East

Download or read book Popular Housing and Urban Land Tenure in the Middle East written by Myriam Ababsa and published by American University in Cairo Press. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irregular or illegal housing constitutes the ordinary condition of popular urban housing in the Middle East. Considering the conditions of daily practices related to land and tenure mobilization and of housing, neighborhood shaping, transactions, and conflict resolution, this book offers a new reading of government action in the cities of Amman, Beirut, Damascus, Istanbul, and Cairo, focussing on the participation of ordinary citizens and their interactions with state apparatus specifically located within the urban space. The book adopts a praxeological approach to law that describes how inhabitants define and exercise their legality in practice and daily routines. The ambition of the volume is to restore the continuum in the consolidation, building after building, of the popular neighborhoods of the cities under study, while demonstrating the closely-knit social relationships and other forms of community bonding.

Book D veloppement in galit s pauvret s

Download or read book D veloppement in galit s pauvret s written by Nicola Maria Boccella and published by KARTHALA Editions. This book was released on 2005 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Dans l'essai introductif Growth and Inegality.

Book The Shared Space

Download or read book The Shared Space written by Milton Santos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-29 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1979. In this forcefully argued book, Milton Santos shows that contemporary explanations of urbanization and spatial organization in underdeveloped countries are inadequate. This failure is attributable to their origins in theories elaborated to explain the development of advanced Western societies. Santos' work provides the basis for the new theory which is so badly needed. He describes the urban economy in these countries in terms of two circuits of activity – an upper circuit consisting of those enterprises and structures which are based on modern technology and are oriented towards the advanced capitalist world, and a lower circuit comprised of more traditional processes and forms of exchange. The dialectical interaction of these two circuits is seen to generate the patterns of growth, forms of State intervention and, above all, the spatial organization characteristic of Third World economies. This was a revision and translation of L’Espace Partagé (1975).

Book Postcolonial African Cities

Download or read book Postcolonial African Cities written by Fassil Demissie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book focuses on contemporary African cities, caught in the contradiction of an imperial past and postcolonial present. The essays explore the cultural role of colonial architecture and urbanism in the production of meanings: in the inscription of power and discipline, as well as in the dynamic construction of identities. It is in these new dense urban spaces, with all their contradictions, that urban Africans are reworking their local identities, building families, and creating autonomous communities – made fragile by neo-liberal states in a globalizing world. The book offers a range of scholarly interpretations of the new forms of urbanity. It engages with issues, themes and topics including colonial legacies, postcolonial intersections, cosmopolitan spaces, urban reconfigurations, and migration which are at the heart of the continuing debate about the trajectory of contemporary African cities. The collection discusses contemporary African cities as diverse as Dar Es Salaam, Dakar, Johannesburg, Lagos and Kinshasa – offering new insights into the current state of postcolonial African cities. This was previously published as a special issue of African Identities.

Book Pathways to Industrialization and Regional Development

Download or read book Pathways to Industrialization and Regional Development written by Allen J. Scott and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-09-27 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paradigm of mass production has given way to radically new forms of organizing industrial production based primarily on the need to foster continuous redesign of products and processes in the face of intensified competition. This change, which is designed to engender continuous adaptive learning in production systems, requires considerable organizational flexibility. The mass production systems constructed in the early post-war period foundered in the face of new forms of competition which put a premium on learning and flexibility.
