Book LAST PERIODS OF UNIVERSAL HIST

Download or read book LAST PERIODS OF UNIVERSAL HIST written by Emma Willard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-05 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Last Periods of Universal History Prefatory remarks.-the fresh events just added to my Universal History are, though forcibly condensed into small compass, numerous, and full of interest and importance. Like Columbus, I have steered my bark through untraveled seas, having collected my facts mostly from newspapers and periodicals, including annals; but I have journeyed in the meantime in my own and in foreign countries, and have often enjoyed the privilege of conversing with the actors of the historic drama, or those personally acquainted with their deeds. The ability to trace great events to their true causes, cannot exist without previous familiarity with his tory; nor is this alone sufficient. And here it becomes no historian to presume on his own success, but humbly to await the award of his judges. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of the Renaissance humanists comes to life in Anthony Graftonâe(tm)s exploration of the primary sources and modern scholarship, classical and modern elements in the world of European letters from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century.Tracing the ties that bound the world of humanistic learning in early modern Europe to other social and cultural spheres, Grafton defines the current state of the art of scholarship on early modern European cultural and intellectual history while simultaneously demonstrating how entertaining, enlightening, and relevant that history can be.Covering a dazzling variety of topics and authors as different as Alberti and Descartes, Grafton maps the grand and meticulous efforts of the past to connect the realm of nature with that of books, the realm of everyday experience with that of passionate reading in massive tomes, and the realm of codes of etiquette and institutions with that of extravagant and joyous eruditionâe"efforts that this book itself brilliantly carries on.

Book 80 Old Testament Characters of World History Chronological Historical and Archaeological Evidence

Download or read book 80 Old Testament Characters of World History Chronological Historical and Archaeological Evidence written by Gerard Gertoux and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-02-27 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the fact that the name of many characters mentioned in the Old Testament, like David, King of Israel, have been recently confirmed by archaeology as well as their epoch and the events in which they were involved, most archaeologists continue to deny the historicity of the Bible they view as pious fiction or a mythical account. They argue that the major events in the Bible such as the victory of Abraham against Chedorlaomer, an unknown king of Elam around 2000 BCE, the victory of Moses against an unknown Pharaoh around 1500 BCE or the victory of Esther, an unknown Persian Queen, against an unknown vizier of Xerxes, never existed because they left absolutely no evidence. They also explain that according to what we know today, these events could not have occurred. These logical arguments are impressive but a precise chronological analysis based on absolute dates, coupled with a rigorous historical investigation, shows that all those major events really took place at the dates and places indicated.

Book excerpt: The product of 10 years' research and support from leading American and European universities, A Universal History of the Destruction of Books traces the tragic story which spans: the smashed tablets of ancient Sumer; the widespread looting of libraries in post-war Iraq; the levelling of the Library of Alexandria; the burning of books by Crusaders and Nazis; and censorship against authors. With diligence and grace, Baez mounts a compelling investigation into the motives behind such destruction and the perverse 'anti-creationism' which it embodies.
