Book The Constants of Nature

Download or read book The Constants of Nature written by John Barrow and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2009-05-06 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reality as we know it is bound by a set of constants—numbers and values that dictate the strengths of forces like gravity, the speed of light, and the masses of elementary particles. In The Constants of Nature, Cambridge Professor and bestselling author John D.Barrow takes us on an exploration of these governing principles. Drawing on physicists such as Einstein and Planck, Barrow illustrates with stunning clarity our dependence on the steadfastness of these principles. But he also suggests that the basic forces may have been radically different during the universe’s infancy, and suggests that they may continue a deeply hidden evolution. Perhaps most tantalizingly, Barrow theorizes about the realities that might one day be found in a universe with different parameters than our own.

Book Units and Physical Constants Classic Reprint

Download or read book Units and Physical Constants Classic Reprint written by Joseph David Everett and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Units and Physical Constants A Russian translation was published at St. Petersburg in 1888, edited by Mr. P. N. Verbitsky and Captain J. Th. Gerabiatieff, and revised by Professor S. A. Ousoff. I am indebted to these gentlemen for pointing out several errors which they discovered in a searching scrutiny not only of the book itself but of the authorities quoted in it. They have, for example, corrected some numbers quoted from Peclet, by the aid of a table of errata in Pclet's book which I had overlooked. The following are the principal items of new matter: 1. A collection of determinations of viscosities of liquids and gases; in connection with which I have to express my deep obligations to Mr. Carl Barus, who lent me a large bundle of MSS., including all recent results on this subject. 2. A summary of recent investigations of the magnetic properties of iron and other substances, with the necessary expositions of theory and terminology. Under this head I have to acknowledge very special obligations to Mr. Shelford Bidwell, some six or eight pages of the new matter being substantially from his pen. I have also received valuable aid from Professor Ewing and Dr. Hopkinson. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Metrology and Physical Constants

Download or read book Metrology and Physical Constants written by A. Di Giuseppe and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2013-10-21 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reliability and accuracy of systems of measurement continue to advance. We are about to enter a period of the most stable measurement system we can imagine with the anticipated new definitions of the SI units of measurement; a direct link between fundamental physics and metrology which will eliminate the current definition of the kilogram, until now based upon an artifact. This book presents selected papers from Course 185 of the Enrico Fermi International School of Physics, held in Varenna, Italy, in July 2012 and jointly organized with the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM). The papers delivered at the school covered some of the most advanced topics in the discipline of metrology, including nano-technologies; quantum information and quantum devices; biology and medicine; food; surface quality; ionising radiation for health, environment, art and archaeology; and climate. The continuous and striking advances in basic research concerning atomic frequency standards operating both in the visible range and at microwave levels and the applications to satellite systems are also considered, in the framework of a historical review of the international organization of metrology, as are the problems inherent in uncertainty statements and definitions. This book will be of interest to all those whose work involves scientific measurement at the highest levels of accuracy.

Book Guidelines for Evaluating and Expressing the Uncertainty of NIST Measurement Results rev Ed

Download or read book Guidelines for Evaluating and Expressing the Uncertainty of NIST Measurement Results rev Ed written by Barry N. Taylor and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of measurements and conclusions derived from them constitute much of the technical information produced by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). In July 1992 the Director of NIST appointed an Ad Hoc Committee on Uncertainty Statements and charged it with recommending a policy on this important topic. The Committee concluded that the CIPM approach could be used to provide quantitative expression of measurement that would satisfy NIST¿s customers¿ requirements. NIST initially published a Technical Note on this issue in Jan. 1993. This 1994 edition addresses the most important questions raised by recipients concerning some of the points it addressed and some it did not. Illustrations.

Download or read book The Fundamental Physical Constants and the Frontier of Measurement written by Brian William Petley and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamental physical constants are used throughout the world by scientists and technologists in the course of every kind of theoretical and experimental research work. The book examines the present state of the measurement arts, and gives indications of likely future developments. This comprehensive and stimulating volume will certainly become a standard reference work in the field of measurement science for physicists, metrologists and workers in other physical science disciplines where a high accuracy of measurement is required.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time changes most things, and physical constants are seem ingly not immune from this contingency. The publishers' suggestion for a new edition has provided an opportunity for a thorough scrutiny of the contents of this book and for the adjustment to some fourteen years of changes since the last edition. At the same time the contents have been increased by the addition of one or two new tables, and current moves towards the adoption of an international system of units ex plain the appearance in the book, wherever it is practicable, of S. 1. units. However, the habits of a lifetime are not easily changed, and it is too much to expect that despite careful proofreading the change of units has been carried through without errors. I shall be grateful for intimation of such mis takes. I wish moreover to thank all those who in the past have taken the trouble to draw my attention to errors, or to superior determinations, or simply to offer advice or criticism. For those who do not find what they seek in this collection, more complete compilations of physical constants are to be found in: Tables of Physical and Chemical Constants, G. W. C. Kaye and T. H.
