Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2019 Missile Defense Review - January 2019 According to a senior administration official, a number of new technologies are highlighted in the report. The review looks at "the comprehensive environment the United States faces, and our allies and partners face. It does posture forces to be prepared for capabilities that currently exist and that we anticipate in the future." The report calls for major investments from both new technologies and existing systems. This is a very important and insightful report because many of the cost assessments for these technologies in the past, which concluded they were too expensive, are no longer applicable. Book Taiwan s Foreign and Defense Policies

Download or read book Taiwan s Foreign and Defense Policies written by Michael D. Swaine and published by Minnesota Historical Society. This book was released on 2001 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taiwan_s foreign and defense policies have evolved greatly since the days of Chiang Kai-Shek. Its leaders have created a government based on popular sovereignty rather than Chinese nationalism; adopted pragmatic and creative approaches to expanding its international presence, and sought to make itself safe from attack or coercion by Mainland China through acquiring modern weapons, building a more efficient military, and developing closer military and political ties with the United States. China, in turn, has adopted a complex strategy of pressures and enticements to arrest Taiwan_s moves toward greater independence. The United States and Japan also wield substantial influence over Taiwan_s foreign and defense policies, but U.S. influence is clearly the dominant influence on Taiwan_s decisions about theater ballistic missile defenses-providing information and advice that will strongly shape the course of Taiwan_s planning, procurement, and deployment. The authors conclude that the United States should continue to maintain a public allegiance to the One China concept, combined with a posture of public ambiguity regarding the level of the U.S. defense commitment. Privately, the United States should make it clear to Beijing that it will respond militarily to a Chinese attack on Taiwan, and should state to Taipei that it will prevent a unilateral attempt to gain independence.

Download or read book Theater Missile Defense TMD in East Asia written by Lars Assmann and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2007 with total page 545 pages. Book excerpt: As East Asia is entering the 21st Century, Japan, in reassessing its security environment and thus its strategic calculus, is on the verge of deploying latest jointly-researched theater missile defenses (TMD) to counter the threat of ballistic and cruise missiles. In parallel, the People's Republic of China is constantly modernizing its ballistic missile forces and is gearing up for a possible contingency with its self-proclaimed "high-tech adversaries". This work shows what drives Japan to deploy theater missile defenses and how the People's Republic of China is poised to be reacting to it.

Book Taiwan s Security in the Post Deng Xiaoping Era

Download or read book Taiwan s Security in the Post Deng Xiaoping Era written by Martin L. Lasater and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-31 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 2000, Taiwan’s Security in the Post-Deng Xiaoping Era analyses the many domestic and international factors comprising Taiwan’s security situation in the late 1990s and early 21st Century. The security of Taiwan remains of international strategic concern, and the military situation in the Taiwan Strait is increasingly volatile, nearly 25 years after this book was first published. This detailed study concludes that Taiwan’s overall security will become increasingly dependent on external factors and that the most important contribution Taipei can make to its own security, other than military preparation, is political astuteness.

Book Strategic Partners

Download or read book Strategic Partners written by Jeanne Wilson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russia's foreign policy experience in the first post-Soviet decade was marked by disappointments as well as surprising turns. Expectations that Russia would join the Western powers as an equal partner were frustrated, while relations with the People's Republic of China warmed considerably. Today, Russia's relationship with China is an important component of its overall foreign policy orientation, as the two states - one greatly diminished, the other clearly on the rise - have found themselves sharing an interest in curbing the power of the United States. In analyzing Russia's evolving foreign policy vis-a-vis China, the author takes into account the legacy of Soviet-era precedents; the simultaneous processes of economic policy change and integration into global economic structures; and military relations. By shedding light on the role of political realism, decision makers, and exogenous factors in Russian foreign policy, this analysis of an important bilateral relationship contributes to the larger project of understanding international relations and the dynamics of domestic and foreign policy change.

Book Interpreting U S China Taiwan Relations

Download or read book Interpreting U S China Taiwan Relations written by Xiabing Li and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2003-02-27 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpreting U.S.- China-Taiwan Relations presents an up-to-date, multidisciplinary approach to this often troublesome relationship through essays written by experts in the fields of political science, economics, military science, history and communications. It begins with a focus on the relationship between the U.S. and China as China presses forward with new development while the United States encourages a balance of power in East Asia. It evaluates the successes and failures of the relationship and the forces behind the stands that they take that feed the stress of the relationship. The second group of essays deals with the relationship between China and Taiwan. They examine the recent changes and tentativeness surrounding the situation caused by the death of Deng Xiaoping and the social and economic problems of China, yet communicate a tremendous optimism that a breakthrough will occur in the future. The final essays explore the evolution of China's perceptions of its international environment as it begins to understand and respond to external circumstances better and more positively.
