Book US Philippines Strategic Relations

Download or read book US Philippines Strategic Relations written by Chintamani Mahapatra and published by Ess Ess Publication. This book was released on 2007 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its long history of serving as a major world power, the United States has had only one major colonial possession in the Asia-Pacific - the Philippines. Soon after achieving victory in World War II, the US granted independence to the Philippines, while the European powers were striving hard to retain their colonial possessions. Why did the new global superpower end its colonial rule, while the weaker European imperial powers were tempted to keep theirs? It was actually a master political stroke by the Truman Administration. While giving political independence to the Filipinos, it deftly erected a structure of an unequal relationship with the Philippines to turn the country into a powerful military bastion to serve American interests. One of the consequences of this policy was reflected in Washington's need to maneuver and engineer the election process in the Philippines in order to keep in place a pro-American head of state. Filipino presidents, in the early 1950s, were made in the US, while elections took place in the Philippines. Based on archival research, this book examines the historical relationship between these two countries.

Book Illusions of Influence

Download or read book Illusions of Influence written by Nick Cullather and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the inner workings of the "special relationship" of the United States and the Philippines, this book challenges the accepted view that portrays the relationship as one of colonial domination and exploitation, with the United States controlling the Philippines for economic and geopolitical gain. Using Philippine sources released since the 1986 revolution and recently declassified U.S. records, the author finds instead a complex structure that allowed both nations to attain their most cherished goals while sacrificing interests of lesser importance. The United States obtained a military base complex it considered essential for the projection of American power in Asia. In return, the Philippines received a favored position in the American market and billions of dollars in economic and military aid. The Philippine elite manipulated the relationship and their nation's economy, creating a "crony capitalist" system that protected a traditional social order from the demands of a restive peasantry and an emerging Filipino-Chinese middle class. Though U.S. policy made crony capitalism possible, it could also threaten it, and Filipinos learned how to steer U.S. policy along lines advantageous to themselves by resorting to nonconfrontational resistance - thwarting development plans, harassing American businesses, diverting aid, restricting trade, and making military bases the target of nationalist attacks. The author rejects the myth that U.S. policy supported economic exploitation, finding instead that American business interests were docile bystanders sacrificed to U.S strategic imperatives. But American policymakers tolerated the manipulations that allowed Filipino oligarchs to plunder the economy and reinforce their political and economic dominance. The book thus forces us to rethink conventional assumptions about dependent relationships, and shows that generalizations about client states need to be qualified by considerations of culture and political economy.

Book Lansdale Magsaysay America and the Philippines a Case Study of Limited Intervention Counterinsurgency

Download or read book Lansdale Magsaysay America and the Philippines a Case Study of Limited Intervention Counterinsurgency written by Combat Studies Institute Press U S Army and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-08-02 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians tend to agree that Ramon Magsaysay's leadership and his relationship with Edward Lansdale are two of the most important features of the Philippine governments campaign against the Huks from 1946-1954. Yet the nuances of his leadership and the nature of their relationship deserve greater investigation. This thesis seeks to further illuminate Magsaysay and Lansdale's relationship by focusing on the role of empathy and sociocultural understanding, in defeating the Huks and restoring the Philippine government's legitimacy. US policy in the Philippines at the time, bolstered regimes riddled with corruption, graft, and nepotism, reinforcing poor governance, and resulting in a loss of government legitimacy. This energized the Huk movement until they were on the verge of toppling the government. A change in US policy coincided with the emergence of Magsaysay and Lansdale. They reversed Huk momentum, rejuvenated the demoralized and oppressive armed forces, and restored the Philippine government's legitimacy, all in less than four years. Their shared, genuine empathy for the Filipino people fostered deep sociocultural understanding. Their combined capabilities and resources then translated empathy and sociocultural understanding into concrete measures to combat the Huks and rebuild popular support for the government.
