Topics covered include the impact of taxes on economic performance; international and corporate taxation; personal tax and welfare systems; environmental taxation; and country-specific tax reform experiences. Bringing together leading international experts to explore specific policy reforms, this book will prove essential reading for academics and researchers of public economics, fiscal policy and tax reform. It will also be warmly welcomed both by undergraduate and graduate students of public economics or the economics of taxation, as well as policymakers and government officials working in the area of tax policy.

Book Civil Procedure

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jack H. Friedenthal
  • Publisher : West Academic Publishing
  • Release : 2008
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 1342 pages

Download or read book Civil Procedure written by Jack H. Friedenthal and published by West Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 1342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The revised ninth edition of this popular casebook fully reflects the restyled Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and covers important new Supreme Court cases on pleading, federal jurisdiction, summary judgment, and due process. The revised edition integrates and does not simply add recent decisions, including Bell Atlantic, Flowers, and Grable. The cases are carefully edited and followed by notes and questions. This revised edition also treats the latest electronic discovery amendments and addresses significant developments in class-action practice. As has been the practice with all of the past editions, the casebook offers a substantial emphasis on the operation of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, but also draws comparisons with state and international practice. Because courses in civil procedure vary greatly as to the hours allotted, we have designed and revised this casebook for maximum flexibility in terms of an individual classroom's coverage, depth, sensibility, and emphasis. The casebook is accompanied by an up-to-date Supplement that includes not only the federal statutes and rules governing procedure, but also comparative state provisions. A number of other materials, such as Advisory Committee notes, proposed rule alternatives, and local court rules, also are included. The Supplement contains, as well, a litigation time chart and an illustrative problem, showing how a case develops in practice and samples of the documents that actually might have formed a portion of the record.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From an outsider perspective learning about a sometimes misunderstood cultural pastime, a beautifully written and contrarian narrative about what it means to hunt in America today. When Lily Raff McCaulou traded in an indie film production career in New York for a reporting job in central Oregon, she never imagined that she'd find herself picking up a gun and learning to hunt. She'd been raised as a gun-fearing environmentalist and an animal lover, and though a meat-eater, she'd always abided by the principle that harming animals is wrong. But Raff McCaulou's perspective shifted when she began spending weekends fly-fishing and weekdays interviewing hunters for her articles, realizing that many of them were more thoughtful about animals and the environment than she was. So she embarked upon the project of learning to hunt from square one. From attending a Hunter Safety course designed for children to field dressing an elk and serving it for dinner, she explores the sport of hunting and all it entails, and tackles the big questions surrounding one of the most misunderstood American practices and pastimes. Not just a personal memoir, this book also explores the role of the hunter in the twenty-first century, the tension (at times artificial) between hunters and environmentalists, and new models of sustainable and ethical food procurement.

Book Unequal Cities

    Book Details:
  • Author : Richard McGahey
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2023-01-10
  • ISBN : 0231557736
  • Pages : 424 pages

Download or read book Unequal Cities written by Richard McGahey and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-10 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities are central to prosperity: they are hubs of innovation and growth. However, the economic vitality of wealthy cities is marred by persistent and pervasive inequality—and deeply entrenched anti-urban policies and politics limit the options to address it. Structural racism, suburban subsidies, regional government fragmentation, the hostility of state legislatures, and federal policy all contribute to an unequal status quo that underfunds cities while preventing them from pursuing fairer outcomes. Economist Richard McGahey explores how cities can foster equitable economic growth despite the obstacles in their way. Drawing on economic and historical analysis as well as his extensive experience in government and philanthropy, he examines the failures of public policy and conventional economic wisdom that have led to the neglect of American cities and highlights opportunities for reform. Unequal Cities features detailed case studies of New York, Detroit, and Los Angeles, tracing how their attempts to achieve greater equity foundered because of the fiscal and political constraints imposed on them. McGahey identifies key lessons about the political coalitions that can overcome anti-urban biases, arguing that alliances among unions, environmentalists, and communities of color can help cities thrive. But he warns that cities cannot solve inequality on their own: political action at state and federal levels is necessary to achieve systemic change. Shedding light on the forces that produced today’s dysfunction and disparities, Unequal Cities provides timely policy prescriptions to promote both growth and equity.
