Book Offshore Energy and Marine Spatial Planning

Download or read book Offshore Energy and Marine Spatial Planning written by Katherine L. Yates and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-29 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The generation of offshore energy is a rapidly growing sector, competing for space in an already busy seascape. This book brings together the ecological, economic, and social implications of the spatial conflict this growth entails. Covering all energy-generation types (wind, wave, tidal, oil, and gas), it explores the direct and indirect impacts the growth of offshore energy generation has on both the marine environment and the existing uses of marine space. Chapters explore main issues associated with offshore energy, such as the displacement of existing activities and the negative impacts it can have on marine species and ecosystems. Chapters also discuss how the growth of offshore energy generation presents new opportunities for collaboration and co-location with other sectors, for example, the co-location of wild-capture fisheries and wind farms. The book integrates these issues and opportunities, and demonstrates the importance of holistic marine spatial planning for optimising the location of offshore energy-generation sites. It highlights the importance of stakeholder engagement in these planning processes and the role of integrated governance, with illustrative case studies from the United States, United Kingdom, northern Europe, and the Mediterranean. It also discusses trade-off analysis and decision theory and provides a range of tools and best practices to inform future planning processes.

Book Big Bold and Blue

    Book Details:
  • Author : James Fitzsimons
  • Publisher : CSIRO PUBLISHING
  • Release : 2016-07
  • ISBN : 1486301959
  • Pages : 433 pages

Download or read book Big Bold and Blue written by James Fitzsimons and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2016-07 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world’s oceans cover about 70% of our planet. To safeguard the delicate ecological and environmental functions of the oceans and their remarkable biodiversity, networks of marine protected areas are being created. In some of these areas, human activity is restricted to non-exploitative activities and in others it is managed in a sustainable way. Australia is at the forefront of marine conservation, with one of the largest systems of marine protected areas in the world. Big, Bold and Blue: Lessons from Australia’s Marine Protected Areas captures Australia’s experience, sharing important lessons from the Great Barrier Reef and many other extraordinary marine protected areas. It presents real-world examples, leading academic research, perspectives on government policy, and information from indigenous sea country management, non-governmental organisations, and commercial and recreational fishing sectors. The lessons learnt during the rapid expansion of Australia’s marine protected areas, both positive and negative, will aid and advise other nations in their own marine conservation efforts.

Book Marine Pollution Contingency Planning

Download or read book Marine Pollution Contingency Planning written by Anastasia Telesetsky and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2017-09-25 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an ever-present threat of catastrophic marine pollution incidents, as illustrated by recent disasters such as the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Even small-scale accidental pollution discharges can have long-term consequences for marine and coastal resources. The UN Convention on the Law of Sea obliges all States to cooperate to prevent accidents and to minimize environmental damage during emergencies by jointly developing and implementing marine pollution contingency plans. The Asia-Pacific is one of the world’s busiest shipping regions, some of its mega-ports experience high rates of vessel congestion, and there are increasing numbers of offshore installations. Marine pollution prevention planning is thus vital for the region. Marine Pollution Contingency Planning: State Practice in Asia-Pacific States outlines and examines marine pollution contingency planning in Australia, Canada, China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Philippines, Singapore, and the United States.

Book Seasonal to Decadal Prediction of Marine Ecosystems Opportunities Approaches and Applications

Download or read book Seasonal to Decadal Prediction of Marine Ecosystems Opportunities Approaches and Applications written by Mark R. Payne and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-06-28 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tremendous advances in oceanographic observing and modeling systems over the last decade have led to unprecedented developments in the nature of information available to marine science. While improvements in observational technologies and networks have garnered much attention, remarkable developments in forecasting the ocean have received much less focus. Exploiting this new predictive skill to improve scientific understanding, generate advice and aid in the management of marine resources, is emerging as one of the new challenges of marine science. Translating predictions of the physical environment into biological outcomes, however, is not straightforward. Fisheries scientists, for example, have been trying to understand the links between physics and biology, and generate predictions of variables such as recruitment, for close to a century, with limited success. Nevertheless, spatial distributions and the timing of key events, which have received less focus, are often tightly linked to the physical environment and may have management-relevant applications. The first-such forecasts based on this skill are now starting to emerge. This Frontiers in Marine Science Research Topic provides a snapshot of the state-of-the-art in Marine Ecological Prediction. It covers the opportunities for developing such forecasts, technical approaches that could be employed, and examples where the technology is already being applied. This body of work therefore marks an important milestone on the route to developing this new and exciting field of marine science.

    Book Details:
  • Author : Andrew Butterworth
  • Publisher : Frontiers Media SA
  • Release : 2017-08-15

Download or read book People Marine Mammal Interactions written by Andrew Butterworth and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our relationships with marine mammals are complex. We have used them as resources, and in some places this remains the case; viewed them as competitors and culled them (again ongoing in some localities); been so captivated and intrigued by them that we have taken them into captivity for our entertainment; and developed a lucrative eco-tourism activity focused on them in many nations. When we first envisaged this special topic, we had two overarching aims: Firstly, we hoped to generate critical evaluation of some of our relationships with these animals. Secondly, we hoped to attract knowledgeable commentators and experts who might not traditionally publish in the peer-reviewed literature. We were also asking ourselves a question about what responsibility mankind might have to marine mammals, on our rapidly changing planet? The answer to the question; can, or should, humans have responsibility for the lives of marine mammals when they are affected by our activities? - is, in our opinion, ‘yes’ – and the logical progression from this question is to direct research and effort to understand and optimise the actions, reactions and responses that mankind may be able to take. We hope that the papers in this special issue bring some illumination to a small selection of topics under this much wider topic area, and prove to be informative and stimulating.

Book Australia s American Alliance

Download or read book Australia s American Alliance written by Peter Dean and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2016-11-14 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is specifically designed as a companion volume to Australia's Defence: Towards a New Era? The Australia-United States Alliance has been critical to Australian foreign and defence policy since the ANZUS Treaty was signed in 1951. For 63 years it has been an enduring feature of Australian defence planning, yet the contemporary alliance is, arguably, in one of the more important phases of reinterpretation in its long history. While the Alliance by its very nature is a bi-lateral relationship, this book will therefore specifically focus on Australian perspectives and policy choices, while providing context on the role of the United States in the Asia-Pacific and its position as a global power.

Book The Modern Law of Marine Insurance

Download or read book The Modern Law of Marine Insurance written by D. Rhidian Thomas and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-02-21 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fifth volume in the series comprises ten contributions written by an expert team of academics and practitioners. Collectively they analyse and expound many of the contemporary legal issues and debates in the law and practice of marine insurance. The new volume is not to be considered as a "new edition" superseding the earlier volumes. To the contrary, it extends on the previous coverage and contributes to the expanding coverage of the series. It achieves this by introducing new topics for analysis and by noting significant developments in themes considered in earlier volumes, thereby providing a useful tool for keeping abreast of an ever developing body of judicial law. This volume tackles topics such as the impact of the Insurance Act 2015 on remedies and the pre-contractual duty of insurers, as well as a contribution from Professor Wilhelmsen on the state ship arrest as a peril under the Nordic Marine Insurance Plan and London terms. It explores the impact of Brexit on jurisdiction in marine insurance whilst also dedicating time to the comparison of US and English law relating to the duties of brokers, and analyses the "but for" test in marine insurance as well as historical development of the law relating to fraudulent claims. Alongside many other important topics, this book meticulously examines Direct and Third-Party claims against P & I Insurers, Passenger liabilities and class actions, Seaworthiness and the operation of the MIA 1906 s.39 post Insurance Act 2015 and the insuring of autonomous and remote-controlled vessels. This book is essential reading for maritime lawyers, brokers and insurance market practitioners, academics, and companies associated with the marine insurance markets worldwide.
