Book Annals of the International Geophysical Year

Download or read book Annals of the International Geophysical Year written by W. J. G. Beynon and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annals of the International Geophysical Year, Volume 48: Bibliography and Index contains bibliography of articles published in connection with the International Geophysical Year (IGY). The preparatory and operational phases of the IGY occupied nearly a decade and the data accumulated in the many scientific disciplines by workers in some 67 countries will provide material for publication for many years. The references have been assembled from information supplied by a wide variety of sources. These references have been grouped into 21 sections, of which Sections I-XIV followed the discipline grouping adopted during the IGY. Within each section references have been arranged in alphabetical order according to the name of the principal author. Anonymous articles are listed at the end of each section, again arranged in alphabetical order by title. In the scientific literature, author's names originally printed in Cyrillic symbols sometimes appear with several different spellings because of the use of different transliteration systems. In the present Bibliography an attempt has been made to achieve consistency by using the same transliteration system throughout. This book will prove useful to geophysicists and researchers who are interested in the accomplishments of the International Geophysical Year.

Book The History of the International Polar Years IPYs

Download or read book The History of the International Polar Years IPYs written by Susan Barr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-02 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although international scientific cooperation - particularly in meteorology - was established previous to the first International Polar Year, the IPY-1 (1882-83) is considered to be the first revolutionary step towards an extensive international cooperation in the polar areas for the benefit of science rather than national prestige and territorial gain. This was followed by IPY-2 (1932-33) and IPY-3 - actually the International Geophysical Year (1957-58) - before the crowning effort of IPY-4 (2007-08). The history of these years is recounted here and explains the political, economic, technical and scientific conditions and expectations that laid the basis for each IPY and which gradually expanded both the scope and extent of our understanding of the complexities in polar regions

Book Sustaining Ocean Observations to Understand Future Changes in Earth s Climate

Download or read book Sustaining Ocean Observations to Understand Future Changes in Earth s Climate written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ocean is an integral component of the Earth's climate system. It covers about 70% of the Earth's surface and acts as its primary reservoir of heat and carbon, absorbing over 90% of the surplus heat and about 30% of the carbon dioxide associated with human activities, and receiving close to 100% of fresh water lost from land ice. With the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, notably carbon dioxide from fossil fuel combustion, the Earth's climate is now changing more rapidly than at any time since the advent of human societies. Society will increasingly face complex decisions about how to mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change such as droughts, sea-level rise, ocean acidification, species loss, changes to growing seasons, and stronger and possibly more frequent storms. Observations play a foundational role in documenting the state and variability of components of the climate system and facilitating climate prediction and scenario development. Regular and consistent collection of ocean observations over decades to centuries would monitor the Earth's main reservoirs of heat, carbon dioxide, and water and provides a critical record of long-term change and variability over multiple time scales. Sustained high-quality observations are also needed to test and improve climate models, which provide insights into the future climate system. Sustaining Ocean Observations to Understand Future Changes in Earth's Climate considers processes for identifying priority ocean observations that will improve understanding of the Earth's climate processes, and the challenges associated with sustaining these observations over long timeframes.

Book The Bunker Climate Atlas of the North Atlantic Ocean

Download or read book The Bunker Climate Atlas of the North Atlantic Ocean written by Hans-Jörg Isemer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine Meteorology has a long tradition, and studies of surface meteorological conditions have been published repeatedly since the end of the last century. Recently, the demand has grown for more detailed descriptions. This stems both from the public's interest in climatic change and from our growing ability to analyse atmospheric and oceanic processes with the aid of numerical models. These models require input data on a regular, finely spaced grid; the increased amount of oceanic data available permits us to provide detailed charts both of surface meteorological conditions and of air-sea interactions. The present atlas deals with the surface climate of the North Atlantic Ocean from the equator to 65°N, in the period 1941 to 1972. It is based on data originally evaluated by Andrew F. Bunker of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He analysed observations from the ships of the Voluntary Observing Fleet in many parts of the world ocean to calculate the various components of the heat budget at the air-sea interface. When Bunker died in 1979, he left the major part of his data and results in an unpublished state. Since he had spent considerable effort on validating the data and calculating air-sea fluxes by the so-called individual method, it was considered worthwhile to make this unique set of climate data available to the scientific community. The observed meteorological quantities are presented in Volume 1 of this atlas. Volume 2 contains the air-sea interaction fluxes.
