Book United States as an Ocean Nation

Download or read book United States as an Ocean Nation written by Mikkel Jorgensen and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The environmental integrity and sustainable productivity of the ocean, our coasts and coastal watersheds, and the Great Lakes play a central role in the well-being of all Americans. Every day, the marine environment supplies a multitude of products and services that enhance and support the lives and livelihoods of citizens. Over half of the United States population lives in coastal watershed counties, and these counties generate 58 percent ($8.3 trillion) of the Nation's gross domestic product (GDP), even though they comprise only 25 percent of the Nation's land area. Structured around six societal themes, this book recommends research priorities designed to advance our understanding of critical ocean processes and phenomena that are relevant to human health, economic well-being, environmental sustainability, adaptation to climate and other environmental change, and national and homeland security.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the opening of sea routes in the fifteenth century, groups of men and women left Portugal to establish themselves across the ports and cities of the Atlantic or Ocean sea. They were refugees and migrants, traders and mariners, Jews , Catholics, and the Marranos of mixed Judaic-Catholic culture. They formed a diasporic community known by contemporaries as the Portuguese Nation. By the early seventeenth century, this nation without a state had created a remarkable trading network that spanned the Atlantic, reached into the Indian Ocean and Asia, and generated millions of pesos that were used to bankroll the Spanish empire. A Nation Upon the Ocean Sea traces the story of the Portuguese Nation from its emergence in the late fifteenth century to its fragmentation in the middle of the seventeenth and situates it in relation to the parallel expansion and crisis of Spanish imperial dominion in the Atlantic. Against the backdrop of this relationship, the book reconstitutes the rich inner life of a community based on movement, maritime trade, and cultural hybridity. We are introduced to mariners and traders in such disparate places as Lima, Seville and Amsterdam, their day-to-day interactions and understandings, their houses and domestic relations, their private reflections and public arguments. This finaly-textured account reveals how the Portuguese Nation created a cohesive and meaningful community despite the mobility and dispersion of its members; how its forms of sociability fed into the development of robust transatlantic commercial networks; and how the day-to-day experience of trade was translated into the sphere of Spanish imperial politics of commercial reform based on religious-ethnic toleration and the liberalization of trade. A microhistory, A Nation Upon the Ocean Sea contributes to our understanding of the broader histories of capitalism, empire, and diaspora in the early Atlantic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the Makahs, a tribal nation at the most northwestern point of the contiguous United States, a deep relationship with the sea is the locus of personal and group identity. Unlike most other indigenous tribes whose lives are tied to lands, the Makah people have long placed marine space at the center of their culture, finding in their own waters the physical and spiritual resources to support themselves. This book is the first to explore the history and identity of the Makahs from the arrival of maritime fur-traders in the eighteenth century through the intervening centuries and to the present day. Joshua L. Reid discovers that the “People of the Cape” were far more involved in shaping the maritime economy of the Pacific Northwest than has been understood. He examines Makah attitudes toward borders and boundaries, their efforts to exercise control over their waters and resources as Europeans and Americans arrived, and their embrace of modern opportunities and technology to maintain autonomy and resist assimilation. The author also addresses current environmental debates relating to the tribe's customary whaling and fishing rights and illuminates the efforts of the Makahs to regain control over marine space, preserve their marine-oriented identity, and articulate a traditional future.

This book was released on 2014-11-02 with total page 110 pages. In 2011, Americans, on average, ate 15 pounds of fish and shellfish per person - 4.7 billion pounds all together - making the United States second in the world in total seafood consumption. Offshore oil production in Federal waters accounts for fully 24 percent of total U.S. crude oil production. More than half of the United States population lives in coastal watershed counties, and these counties generate 58 percent ($8.3 trillion) of the Nation's gross domestic product (GDP)-even though they comprise only 25 percent of the Nation's land area. If American coastal watershed counties were considered an individual country, that country would have a GDP higher than that of China. Recognizing the central role these environments and their resources play, and the many sometimes competing demands placed on them, President Obama issued Executive Order 13547, Stewardship of the Ocean, Our Coasts, and the Great Lakes, on July 19, 2010. The Executive Order established a comprehensive National Ocean Policy to improve the Nation's stewardship of the ocean, our coasts, and the Great Lakes. The Policy, which adopts the Final Recommendations of the Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force, calls for use of the best available science to inform decisions affecting these essential ecosystems as well as to enhance humanity's capacity to understand and respond to a changing global environment. Full implementation of the National Ocean Policy will require significant progress in ocean science and more effective application of research results to aid decision-making. These two important concepts drove the selection of issues that frame this document, Science for an Ocean Nation. Science for an Ocean Nation sets priorities for scientific research that support the National Ocean Policy goal of balancing the productive use of the marine environment with its stewardship and protection. It represents the consensus view of 25 Federal agencies regarding key ocean science research areas and incorporates extensive input from outside the Federal Government. This report is constructed around six societal themes that frame ocean research in terms of the needs of Americans. Within these societal themes, Science for an Ocean Nation presents research priorities with the greatest potential to provide benefits to the Nation. This report builds on its predecessor, Charting the Course for Ocean Science in the United States for the Next Decade ("Charting the Course"), by updating research priorities, addressing emerging areas of research, and highlighting accomplishments resulting from Charting the Course. It also highlights cross-cutting capabilities and approaches that can help provide the technological advancements, broad perspective, and community structure needed to address the research priorities. The themes that frame Science for an Ocean Nation represent key areas of interaction between human society and the ocean. The research priorities within each societal theme draw upon both natural and social sciences and aim to improve the tools required not only to carry out research but also to translate, disseminate, and apply the results of that research to address pressing issues facing the Nation and the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional narratives describe the United States as a continental country bordered by Canada and Mexico. Yet, since the late twentieth century the United States has claimed more water space than land space, and more water space than perhaps any other country in the world. This watery version of the United States borders some twenty-one countries, particularly in the archipelagoes of the Pacific and the Caribbean. In Borderwaters Brian Russell Roberts dispels continental national mythologies to advance an alternative image of the United States as an archipelagic nation. Drawing on literature, visual art, and other expressive forms that range from novels by Mark Twain and Zora Neale Hurston to Indigenous testimonies against nuclear testing and Miguel Covarrubias's visual representations of Indonesia and the Caribbean, Roberts remaps both the fundamentals of US geography and the foundations of how we discuss US culture.
