Book U S Army Mobilization and Logistics in the Korean War

Download or read book U S Army Mobilization and Logistics in the Korean War written by Terrence J. Gough and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In view of their crucial importance to military success, mobilization and logistics deserve thorough attention from historians. Although the Army's ability to mobilize has improved in recent years, much remains to be done, and the Korean War experience can provide valuable insights. Planners involved in the attempt to perfect current automated manpower mobilization systems need to prepare for possible strains and even collapse of those systems. In an emergency, we may have to rely on manual methods such as those that saw us through the Korean War. Industrial preparedness also has received increased emphasis and support in the last decade. But in this area, as well, there is much to be learned from the Korean War's partial mobilization. Finally, we can study with profit the problems encountered in supplying the large forces that we fielded in Korea. Planners who deal with theater logistics could benefit from detailed analysis, solidly grounded in original sources, of those problems and the solutions devised for them during the war. This monograph should provide impetus to examine Korean War mobilization and logistics. Through a discussion of the available literature, the author presents an overview of the most pertinent issues addressed thus far. He then suggests how future investigators might elaborate on particular points, and offers topics that warrant further research. WILLIAM A. STOFFT Brigadier General, USA Chief of Military History

Book The Inflexible Response United States Army Mobilization Doctrine 1945 1951

Download or read book The Inflexible Response United States Army Mobilization Doctrine 1945 1951 written by John Michael Kendall and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By examining the mobilization plans developed before the Korean War and the actual mobilization during the first year of that war, the author answers the question of why the Army mobilized in the manner it did for the war. After World War II the Army assumed unusual missions, the occupation of Europe and Japan and assistance to the fledgling Air Force, which hindered its readiness. While the Army developed traditional mobilization plans in 1946, the creation of the Department of Defense, uncertainty over the army's mission, and austere budgets prevented the development of a reserve force to support these plans. Only a partial mobilization was ordered for the Korean War but this put a strain on army readiness and created inequalities for those recalled. The burden fell on World War II veterans. The mobilization problems received political attention, and Congress passed the Armed Forces Reserve Act of 1952 to protect reservists. Universal Military Training, the keystone of the mobilization plans, never passed Congress. The author concludes that the political, economic, military, and international environment of the period created an uncertain situation which insured that the Army could not have the large responsive reserve that it had desired. This environment forced the Army into the inefficient mobilization used during the Korean War. (Author).

Book excerpt: "Army Reserve Heritage, 1775-Present. The citizen-soldiers of the American Revolution were the precursors of Army Reserve Soldiers-warrior-citizens --- who proudly serve our country today. Through the years, in the Civil War, Mexican Expedition, World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, Bosnia, and the Global War on Terrorism, federal citizen-soldiers have answered the call to duty. Army Reserve Soldiers have also contributed to our national security through humanitarian and nation-building actions both overseas and at home. Such activities have included aid to Somalia and Bangladesh, Kurdish relief efforts in Iraq, medical aid in Latin America, and disaster relief overseas and at home. Today's Army Reserve is ready to meet the challenges of the 21st century as it has in the past."--
