Book The United States Army at Fort Knox

Download or read book The United States Army at Fort Knox written by Matthew D. Rector and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located in north-central Kentucky, Fort Knox is one of the army's major installations and is home to several commands, including the United States Army School and Center and the United States Army Recruiting Command. The fort's history dates to 1903, when a series of military maneuvers was held by the United States Army in West Point, Kentucky. When World War I required the establishment of additional military training facilities, Camp Knox was created. The post closed as a permanent installation in 1922, but it remained an active training center for army programs and, briefly, a national forest. On January 1, 1932, Camp Knox was made a permanent installation again and has since been known as Fort Knox. In 1940, the Armored Force was established, paving the way for the continuing evolution of armed warfare. The United States Bullion Depository chose its location because of its proximity to this post.

Book The African American Soldier

Download or read book The African American Soldier written by Michael L. Lanning and published by Kensington Publishing Corp.. This book was released on 2012-08-24 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than five thousand blacks joined the rebel Americans in the war as soldiers, sailors, and marines; many more supported the rebellion as laborers. Their service went largely unrecognized and unrecorded. Few letters, journals, or other narratives by blacks about the Revolution exist because whites had denied most African Americans an education. White historians of the period, and for years after the war, ignored the contributions and impact of thousands of blacks participants for several reasons. First of all, prejudices were so deeply ingrained that it did not even occur to most whites of the time that blacks had played a significant role either as individuals who fought or labored or as a segment of the population that affected decisions. Prejudices also prevented some who did witness the contributions of African Americans from honestly reporting that blacks could perform equally with whites on the battlefield if given the opportunity. Others did not mention blacks because of the difficulty of explaining why the United States kept half a million men, women, and children enslaved while fighting for independence and liberty." From Defenders of Liberty, by Lt. Col. Michael Lee Lanning (Ret.)

Book United States Army Armor Center and Fort Knox 1996 Annual Command History

Download or read book United States Army Armor Center and Fort Knox 1996 Annual Command History written by Robert S. Cameron and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Army History Program became a major part of the Army's institutional memory during World War II. During that conflict the Army began compiling a detailed chronicle of its actions and the rationale for its decisions. This record was to " ... give an account of what was done from the point of view of the command preparing the history, including a candid, and factual account of difficulties, mistakes recognized as such ... the measures used to overcome them, and the effectiveness of such measures." As initially envisioned the History Program would feed the lessons learned process and help the Army grow. This intent continues to drive the Army History Program today, and it is embodied in the following pages. Command histories possess several intrinsic values. Not only do command histories represent legal public records of activities, they also serve as a reference, feeding current and future activities. Command histories capture information to support or protect the command in the future. Moreover, a sound, readable history increases knowledge within and beyond the command of key events, trends, and forces driving decisions. The 1996 Annual Command History provides an overview of key activities within the Armor Center and links them with broader trends within the military establishment. It is primarily based upon sources provided by organizations on post, the author's notes from interviews conducted and briefings attended, and a review of pertinent Army publications. The depth and breadth of analysis partially reflects the availability of source material that in some cases was unavailable. However, responsibility for the final presentation lies with the author alone.

Book The Evolution of US Army Tactical Doctrine 1946 76

Download or read book The Evolution of US Army Tactical Doctrine 1946 76 written by Robert A. Doughty and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper focuses on the formulation of doctrine since World War II. In no comparable period in history have the dimensions of the battlefield been so altered by rapid technological changes. The need for the tactical doctrines of the Army to remain correspondingly abreast of these changes is thus more pressing than ever before. Future conflicts are not likely to develop in the leisurely fashions of the past where tactical doctrines could be refined on the battlefield itself. It is, therefore, imperative that we apprehend future problems with as much accuracy as possible. One means of doing so is to pay particular attention to the business of how the Army's doctrine has developed historically, with a view to improving methods of future development.
