This book was released on 2020-05-11 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When many people hear the words United Kingdom, they instantly think of England. This region, part of the European island of Great Britain, is indeed a large part of the greater entity known as the United Kingdom. But many people do not realize that the UK also includes Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. Today the United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy. Many years ago, however, the area now known as the United Kingdom was made up of many smaller kingdoms. Through the centuries the leaders of those kingdoms fought for the right to rule the larger region. A long line of kings and queens played parts in those battles. Eventually, a government made up of the people emerged an ever-evolving government that exists to this day.

Book Betting The House

Download or read book Betting The House written by Tim Ross and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 18th April 2017, Theresa May stunned Britain by announcing a snap election. With poll leads of more than 20 points over Jeremy Corbyn's divided Labour Party, the first Tory landslide since Margaret Thatcher's day seemed certain. Seven weeks later, Tory dreams had turned to dust. Instead of the 100-seat victory she'd been hoping for, May had lost her majority, leaving Parliament hung and her premiership hanging by a thread. Labour MPs, meanwhile, could scarcely believe their luck. Far from delivering the wipe-out that most predicted, Corbyn's popular, anti-austerity agenda won the party 30 seats, cementing his position as leader and denying May the right to govern alone. This timely and indispensable book gets to the bottom of why the Tories failed, and how Corbyn's Labour overcame impossible odds to emerge closer to power than at any election since the era of Tony Blair. Who was to blame for the Tories' mistakes? How could so many politicians and pollsters fail to see what was coming? And what was the secret of Corbyn's apparently unstoppable rise? Through new interviews and candid private accounts from key players, political journalists Tim Ross and Tom McTague set out to answer these questions and more, piecing together the inside story of this most dramatic and important of elections.

This book consists of six chapters and opens with a discussion on Michael Faraday's discovery of electromagnetic induction that paved the way for the development of electric power, along with some major engineering achievements that contributed to advances in electricity generation. The next chapter looks at some of the laws enacted in Britain to regulate the use of electricity, including the Public Health Act of 1875 and the Gas Act of 1847. The debate over the merits of direct current vs. alternating current is also examined, together with attempts to remove legislative restrictions regarding the supply of electricity; Thomas Edison's establishment of Electric Light Company in America; and the emergence of the British manufacturing industry. The final chapter is devoted to the nationalization of the British electricity industry and the role played by the Central Electricity Board. This monograph will be of interest to energy policymakers as well as those in the electricity industry.
