Book excerpt: Each year this book celebrates achievements of the United Arab Emirates and in so doing it pays tribute to the architect of this stunning success story, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the greatly loved and respected founding father and President of the UAE from its formation on 2 December 1971 until his death on 2 November 2004. Sheikh Zayed displayed enormous wisdom and strength in overcoming the obstacles that faced him in constructing a modern nation. He never faltered on his course and knew exactly what he wanted to achieve - and why. He used to say that 'Wealth is not money. Wealth is in people.' And he devoted his efforts to providing education, health care and social services for all the country's citizens. At the same time he nurtured an environment in which business could flourish and people could live rewarding lives in freedom and peace.

Book Diplomacy and Defense Policy of the United Arab Emirates

Download or read book Diplomacy and Defense Policy of the United Arab Emirates written by William Rugh and published by Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research. This book was released on 2002-11-27 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the establishment of the UAE in 1971, the country's foreign and defense policies have largely been driven by UAE President HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan. From the beginning, Sheikh Zayed identified four objectives, namely: the establishment of good relations with immediate neighbors, peaceful settlement of disputes, solidarity with the Arab and Islamic worlds, and fruitful cooperation with all nations. Despite major challenges to foreign policy, such as the two Gulf wars, the Arab-Israeli conflict, and the dispute with Iran over the occupation of the three UAE islands in the Gulf, Sheikh Zayed has been able to adhere to the UAE's foreign policy objectives and steer its defense policy accordingly. This approach has ensured that the UAE, which in 1971 had been a weak fledgling state facing hostile neighbors and almost no friends, by 2001 had established strong alliances in the Gulf and the Arab world, strategic ties with the United States and the West, and a position of widespread respect and influence.

Book A Strategic Analysis of the Construction Industry in the United Arab Emirates

Download or read book A Strategic Analysis of the Construction Industry in the United Arab Emirates written by Viktor Gorgenl„nder and published by Diplomica Verlag. This book was released on 2011-02 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The construction industry is one of the most booming industries in the world. In particular, in the United Arab Emirates this industry has experienced a constant growth over the course of the last few years. Driven by the UAE’s oil wealth, the country has witnessed an unmatched development and transformation. Oil revenues have lead to a driving construction boom and completely change the face of the state. The construction industry is still one of the engines of economic growth in the UAE. One of the highest concentrations of cranes in the world speaks volumes about the incredible pace of construction taking place, particularly in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, but also in the other emirates. The fact that about 30,000, or 24 percent of the world's 125,000 construction cranes are currently operating in the region speaks for itself. The UAE’s construction projects stands out clearly from building projects in other parts of the world, due to the fact that there is no constraint on constructional imagination and there is no place in the world where construction moves as fast as in the UAE. With some of the most innovative mega projects such as "Burj Khalifa" (the tallest building in the world), or "The Palm Jumeirah", "The Palm Jebel Ali" and "The Palm Deira" (the world’s largest man-made islands) with epithets of world’s biggest, best, and tallest the UAE construction industry remains unbeaten. The construction industry is a complex environment in which each organization is faced with numerous opportunities and threats. This book provides an in-depth analysis of the fast growing construction industry in the UAE, while scanning the construction business for opportunities and threats. This book implements the PESTEL analysis that will be used to analyze the UAE’s construction industry. The main objective of the research reported in this book is to identify the factors in the macro-environment that might affect an organization. Having the PESTEL context, this output is used to execute a SWOT analysis. The PESTEL factors combined with external micro-environmental factors are classified as opportunities and threats in a SWOT analysis. Thus, this research also aims to identify the opportunities and threats in the construction business. This study does not assess company’s internal strengths and weaknesses. Through strategic analysis of the UAE’s construction business this book creates an adequate framework that helps participants of the construction business to take advantage of opportunities while protecting them from threats.

Download or read book Access Denied written by Ronald Deibert and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2008-01-25 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of Internet blocking and filtering around the world: analyses by leading researchers and survey results that document filtering practices in dozens of countries. Many countries around the world block or filter Internet content, denying access to information that they deem too sensitive for ordinary citizens—most often about politics, but sometimes relating to sexuality, culture, or religion. Access Denied documents and analyzes Internet filtering practices in more than three dozen countries, offering the first rigorously conducted study of an accelerating trend. Internet filtering takes place in more than three dozen states worldwide, including many countries in Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa. Related Internet content-control mechanisms are also in place in Canada, the United States and a cluster of countries in Europe. Drawing on a just-completed survey of global Internet filtering undertaken by the OpenNet Initiative (a collaboration of the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard Law School, the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto, the Oxford Internet Institute at Oxford University, and the University of Cambridge) and relying on work by regional experts and an extensive network of researchers, Access Denied examines the political, legal, social, and cultural contexts of Internet filtering in these states from a variety of perspectives. Chapters discuss the mechanisms and politics of Internet filtering, the strengths and limitations of the technology that powers it, the relevance of international law, ethical considerations for corporations that supply states with the tools for blocking and filtering, and the implications of Internet filtering for activist communities that increasingly rely on Internet technologies for communicating their missions. Reports on Internet content regulation in forty different countries follow, with each two-page country profile outlining the types of content blocked by category and documenting key findings.
