Book Unitary Symmetry and Elementary Particles

Download or read book Unitary Symmetry and Elementary Particles written by D Lichtenberg and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unitary Symmetry and Elementary Particles, Second Edition presents the role of symmetry in the study of the physics of the elementary particles. This book discusses the nature and scope of unitary symmetry in physics. Comprised of 12 chapters, this edition starts with an overview of the theories of electromagnetism and gravitation to describe the behavior of certain physical systems. This text then examines the two main categories of the mathematical properties of groups, namely, the properties of abstract groups and the properties of representations of groups. Other chapters consider the use of group theory, which is a significant tool in studying symmetry. This book discusses as well the states that are the basis vectors of irreducible unitary representations of Lie group. The final chapter deals with the quark model, which provides a useful way to understand many properties of hadrons in terms of simpler entities. This book is a valuable resource for physicists.

Book Unitary Symmetry and Elementary Particles

Download or read book Unitary Symmetry and Elementary Particles written by D. B. Lichtenberg and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unitary Symmetry and Elementary Particles discusses the role of symmetry in elementary particle physics. The book reviews the theory of abstract groups and group representations including Eigenstates, cosets, conjugate classes, unitary vector spaces, unitary representations, multiplets, and conservation laws. The text also explains the concept of Young Diagrams or Young Tableaux to prove the basis functions of the unitary irreducible representations of the unitary group SU(n). The book defines Lie groups, Lie algebras, and gives some examples of these groups. The basis vectors of irreducible unitary representations of Lie groups constitute a multiplet, which according to Racah (1965) and Behrends et al. (1962) can have properties of weights. The text also explains the properties of Clebsch-Gordan coefficients and the Wigner-Eckart theorem. SU(3) multiplets have members classified as hadrons (strongly interacting particles), of which one characteristic show that the mass differences of these members have some regular properties. The Gell-Mann and Ne-eman postulate also explains another characteristic peculiar to known multiplets. The book describes the quark model, as well as, the uses of the variants of the quark model. This collection is suitable for researchers and scientists in the field of applied mathematics, nuclear physics, and quantum mechanics.

Book Symmetry Principles Particle Physics

Download or read book Symmetry Principles Particle Physics written by W. M. Gibson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1976-03-11 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An understanding of the properties and interactions of the elementary particles is an essential prerequisite of research work in high energy physics. Much progress in the subject has been achieved with the aid of symmetry principles. In this 1980 book the concept of symmetry or invariance is employed as a unifying theme. Using a careful explanation of the mathematical formalism and with many applications to particular cases, the authors introduce the reader to the symmetry schemes which dominate the world of the particle physicist. The presentation will also appeal to mathematicians and physicists in other fields who are interested in the applications of the general principles of symmetry. After a brief survey of the particles and a review of the relevant quantum mechanics, the principal symmetries are studied in turn. Some technical points are relegated to appendices and the book contains extensive references.

Book Symmetries and Group Theory in Particle Physics

Download or read book Symmetries and Group Theory in Particle Physics written by Giovanni Costa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-05 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Symmetries, coupled with the mathematical concept of group theory, are an essential conceptual backbone in the formulation of quantum field theories capable of describing the world of elementary particles. This primer is an introduction to and survey of the underlying concepts and structures needed in order to understand and handle these powerful tools. Specifically, in Part I of the book the symmetries and related group theoretical structures of the Minkowskian space-time manifold are analyzed, while Part II examines the internal symmetries and their related unitary groups, where the interactions between fundamental particles are encoded as we know them from the present standard model of particle physics. This book, based on several courses given by the authors, addresses advanced graduate students and non-specialist researchers wishing to enter active research in the field, and having a working knowledge of classical field theory and relativistic quantum mechanics. Numerous end-of-chapter problems and their solutions will facilitate the use of this book as self-study guide or as course book for topical lectures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this textbook, all known fundamental interactions are considered and the main directions of their unification are reviewed. The basic theoretical ideas and experiments, which permit establishing a quark-lepton level of matter structure are discussed. A general scheme for the theory of interacting fields with the help of the local gauge invariance principle is given. This scheme is used for presentation of the basic aspects of the quantum chromodynamics and electroweak theory of Weinberg-Salam-Glashow. Principles of operation and designs of accelerators, neutrino telescopes, and elementary particle detectors are considered. The modern theory of the Universe evolution is described.

Download or read book The Origin of Mass written by John Iliopoulos and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-22 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery of a new elementary particle at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in 2012 made headlines in world media. Since we already know of a large number of elementary particles, why did this latest discovery generate so much excitement? This small book reveals that this particle provides the key to understanding one of the most extraordinary phenomena which occurred in the early Universe. It introduces the mechanism that made possible, within tiny fractions of a second after the Big Bang, the generation of massive particles. The Origin of Mass is a guided tour of cosmic evolution, from the Big Bang to the elementary particles we study in our accelerators today. The guiding principle of this book is a concept of symmetry which, in a profound and fascinating way, seems to determine the structure of the Universe.

Book Quantum Mechanics with Non Unitary Symmetries

Download or read book Quantum Mechanics with Non Unitary Symmetries written by Bojan Bistrovic and published by Marsonia Press LLC. This book was released on 2020-04-22 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows that with minimal modifications of postulates of non-relativistic quantum mechanics to allow for non-unitary representations of symmetry groups (Lorentz group in particular), one achieves a fully relativistic quantum theory without any of the issues (like negative energies, etc.) that led to the second quantization and QFT. It is shown that quite a few phenomena in elementary particle physics (like for example neutral kaon mixing, CP symmetry and it's supposed breaking) can be explained purely as a consequence of relativistic invariance and relativistic invariance alone. It is shown that by categorizing mesons via the representation of Lorentz group they belong to, one can explain a lot of their properties, as well as a lot of discrepancies in the particle data tables. It is also shown that based on properties of Lorentz representations of products of meson decays, a lot of excited states listed in PDG tables are really several different excitations with similar masses. Relativistic treatment of bound states in momentum space is developed and used to calculate decay widths of various composite particles like Positronium or mesons, and then those decay widths are used to calculate various properties of quarks (like their masses or charges) that were previously misunderstood. In particular, it is shown that quarks are actually quite heavy (around 3.5GeV for up/down quarks) and that while Lorentz invariance allows both fractional values (2/3, -1/3) as well as integer values (2,1), based on (very sparse) available experimental data, integer quark charges are more consistent with observed decay widths than fractional charges.
