Book An Unit in Agriculture

Download or read book An Unit in Agriculture written by Joseph Doliver Elliff and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-27 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Unit in Agriculture: An Outline Course of Study and Student's, Laboratory Manual, for Teachers and Students in Secondary Schools "The most significant fact in the educational world to-day is the demand that agriculture be taught in the public schools. I do not believe in that philosophy of education which would establish separate schools for the various industries and occupations of life." If we accept these statements, the conclusion is obvious: we should teach agriculture in existing high schools and we should do it now. We should teach this subject in existing schools because: 1. We are not ready to establish separate industrial or trade schools in this country. Such schools, if maintained at state expense, smack of European conditions and class distinctions. 2. We could not meet the expense of a dual system of secondary schools, even if we were willing to do so. Most districts find some difficulty in providing adequately for existing schools. To divide our energies and resources between two systems of high schools, would mean the ultimate failure of both. 3. The existing high schools can easily be made to fill the demand. When agriculture is put on an equal footing with other subjects, when teachers are employed who know and can teach the subject, and when they are given time and equipment to teach it, the problem will be solved. 4. Measured by any standards of educational aims and educational values, courses in agriculture will compare favorably with other courses taught. We should introduce this subject immediately, for the very excellent reason that the demand must and will be met. Book The New Agriculture

Download or read book The New Agriculture written by T. Byard Collins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Agriculture: A Popular Outline of the Changes, Which Are Revolutionizing, the Methods of Farming and the Habits of Farm Life Individualism - the right and power of the individual to regulate his own life, think his own thoughts, express his own convictions, carry out his own theories, and strive Without let or hindrance for the attainment of his own ideals, in so far as' all this may be done Without trespassing upon the rights of others - this undoubtedly constitutes the basis of many a man's aspiration who sees only a diminishing prospect of attaining his heart's desire in his present environment. He feels that the incorporation Of industries into one gigantic whole, or, at best, into a limited number of colossal units, renders him insignificant beyond What is right, deprives him of the dignity of manhood, and stifles his life. He feels that the embezzler, the speculator, and the thief in exalted places are given Opportunities for public exploitation and self-enrich ment, and that the common, ubiquitous and ever-hateful grafter is'an inevitable product of the system.
