Book Unit Groups of Representation Rings and Their Ghost Rings as Biset Functors

Download or read book Unit Groups of Representation Rings and Their Ghost Rings as Biset Functors written by Rob Carman and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of biset functors developed by Serge Bouc has been instrumental in the study of the unit group of the Burnside ring of a finite group, in particular for the case of p-groups. The unit group of the ghost ring of the Burnside ring defines a biset functor, and becomes a useful tool in studying the Burnside ring unit group functor itself. We are interested in studying the unit group of another representation ring: the trivial source ring of a finite group. Here we show how the unit group of the trivial source ring and its associated ghost ring define biset functors. Since the trivial source ring is often seen as connecting the Burnside ring to the character ring and Brauer character ring of a finite group, we study all these representation rings at the same time. We point out that restricting all of these representation rings' unit groups to their torsion subgroups also give biset functors, which can be completely determined in the case of the character ring and Brauer character ring.

Book Unit Groups of Classical Rings

Download or read book Unit Groups of Classical Rings written by Gregory Karpilovsky and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to give a self-contained, up-to-date account of the structure of unit groups of classical rings. In so doing, the work draws together four areas of mathematics: ring theory, group theory, group representation theory, and algebraic number theory. The ensuing interplay between these disciplines provides a unique source of enrichment for each of them. The main theme centers on two related problems: to determine the isomorphism class of the unit group (U)R of ring R in terms of natural invariants associated with R; and to find an effective method for the construction of units of ring R. Various threads of the development are tied together to convey a comprehensive picture of the current state of the subject. Examples are provided to help research workers who need to compute explicitly unit groups of certain rings. A familiarity with basic ring-theoretic and group-theoretic concepts is assumed, but a chapter on algebraic preliminaries is included. The text is distinguished by its very clear exposition.

Book Cogroups and Co rings in Categories of Associative Rings

Download or read book Cogroups and Co rings in Categories of Associative Rings written by George M. Bergman and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1996 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies representable functors among well-known varieties of algebras. All such functors from associative rings over a fixed ring R to each of the categories of abelian groups, associative rings, Lie rings, and to several others are determined. Results are also obtained on representable functors on varieties of groups, semigroups, commutative rings, and Lie algebras. The book includes a "Symbol index", which serves as a glossary of symbols used and a list of the pages where the topics so symbolized are treated, and a "Word and phrase index". The authors have strived -- and succeeded -- in creating a volume that is very user-friendly.

Book This is Your Brain on Music

Download or read book This is Your Brain on Music written by Daniel Levitin and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2019-07-04 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of The Changing Mind and The Organized Mind comes a New York Times bestseller that unravels the mystery of our perennial love affair with music ***** 'What do the music of Bach, Depeche Mode and John Cage fundamentally have in common?' Music is an obsession at the heart of human nature, even more fundamental to our species than language. From Mozart to the Beatles, neuroscientist, psychologist and internationally-bestselling author Daniel Levitin reveals the role of music in human evolution, shows how our musical preferences begin to form even before we are born and explains why music can offer such an emotional experience. In This Is Your Brain On Music Levitin offers nothing less than a new way to understand music, and what it can teach us about ourselves. ***** 'Music seems to have an almost wilful, evasive quality, defying simple explanation, so that the more we find out, the more there is to know . . . Daniel Levitin's book is an eloquent and poetic exploration of this paradox' Sting 'You'll never hear music in the same way again' Classic FM magazine 'Music, Levitin argues, is not a decadent modern diversion but something of fundamental importance to the history of human development' Literary Review

Book Algebras and Representation Theory

Download or read book Algebras and Representation Theory written by Karin Erdmann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-07 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully written textbook provides an accessible introduction to the representation theory of algebras, including representations of quivers. The book starts with basic topics on algebras and modules, covering fundamental results such as the Jordan-Hölder theorem on composition series, the Artin-Wedderburn theorem on the structure of semisimple algebras and the Krull-Schmidt theorem on indecomposable modules. The authors then go on to study representations of quivers in detail, leading to a complete proof of Gabriel's celebrated theorem characterizing the representation type of quivers in terms of Dynkin diagrams. Requiring only introductory courses on linear algebra and groups, rings and fields, this textbook is aimed at undergraduate students. With numerous examples illustrating abstract concepts, and including more than 200 exercises (with solutions to about a third of them), the book provides an example-driven introduction suitable for self-study and use alongside lecture courses.

Book Biset Functors for Finite Groups

Download or read book Biset Functors for Finite Groups written by serge Bouc and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-03-10 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume exposes the theory of biset functors for finite groups, which yields a unified framework for operations of induction, restriction, inflation, deflation and transport by isomorphism. The first part recalls the basics on biset categories and biset functors. The second part is concerned with the Burnside functor and the functor of complex characters, together with semisimplicity issues and an overview of Green biset functors. The last part is devoted to biset functors defined over p-groups for a fixed prime number p. This includes the structure of the functor of rational representations and rational p-biset functors. The last two chapters expose three applications of biset functors to long-standing open problems, in particular the structure of the Dade group of an arbitrary finite p-group.This book is intended both to students and researchers, as it gives a didactic exposition of the basics and a rewriting of advanced results in the area, with some new ideas and proofs.

Book Introduction to Soergel Bimodules

Download or read book Introduction to Soergel Bimodules written by Ben Elias and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-26 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive introduction to Soergel bimodules. First introduced by Wolfgang Soergel in the early 1990s, they have since become a powerful tool in geometric representation theory. On the one hand, these bimodules are fairly elementary objects and explicit calculations are possible. On the other, they have deep connections to Lie theory and geometry. Taking these two aspects together, they offer a wonderful primer on geometric representation theory. In this book the reader is introduced to the theory through a series of lectures, which range from the basics, all the way to the latest frontiers of research. This book serves both as an introduction and as a reference guide to the theory of Soergel bimodules. Thus it is intended for anyone who wants to learn about this exciting field, from graduate students to experienced researchers.

Book excerpt: An extraordinary modern novel in the Victorian tradition, Charles Palliser has created something extraordinary—a plot within a plot within a plot of family secrets, mysterious clues, low-born birth, high-reaching immorality, and, always, always the fog-enshrouded, enigmatic character of 19th century—London itself. “So compulsively absorbing that reality disappears . . . One is swept along by those enduring emotions that defy modern art and a random universe: hunger for revenge, longing for justice and the fantasy secretly entertained by most people that the bad will be punished and the good rewarded.”—The New York Times “A virtuoso achievement . . . It is an epic, a tour de force, a staggeringly complex and tantalizingly layered tale that will keep readers engrossed in days. . . . The Quincunx will not disappoint you. It is, quite simply, superb.”—Chicago Sun-Times “A bold and vivid tale that invites the reader to get lost in the intoxicating rhythms of another world. And the invitation is irresistible.”—San Francisco Chronicle “A remarkable book . . . In mood, color, atmosphere and characters, this is Charles Dickens reincarnated . . . It is an immersing experience.”—Los Angeles Times Book Review “To read the first pages is to be trapped for seven-hundred odd more: you cannot stop turning them.”—The New Yorker “Few books, at most a dozen or two in a lifetime, affect us this way. . . . For sheer intricacy and ingenuity, for skill and clarity of storytelling, it is the kind of book readers wait for, a book to get lost in.”—The Philadelphia Inquirer
