Book Union Wage Determination in Canadian and U S Manufacturing 1964 1990

Download or read book Union Wage Determination in Canadian and U S Manufacturing 1964 1990 written by John W. Budd and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author analyzes nominal and real wage changes in unionized manufacturing firms in Canada and the United States over the years 1964-90. He finds more differences between the two countries' patterns of wage determination in the years 1964-79 than have commonly been recognized. In the 1980s, the structure of nominal wage determination changed more sharply in the United States than in Canada. Real wage determination changed little in the United States before 1986, at which point real wages began falling relative to what would have been predicted based on patterns of bargaining in earlier years. In Canada, real wages in the 1980s were significantlyhigher than they would have been if the previous patterns of wage determination had persisted. Both the nominal and real wage change results suggest that unions in U.S. manufacturing fared poorly in wage bargaining in the 1980s by comparison with their Canadian counterparts.

Book The Effect of International Unions on Wage Determination in Canada

Download or read book The Effect of International Unions on Wage Determination in Canada written by Budd and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article uses collective bargaining agreement wage data spanning 1964 92 to analyse the effect of international unions on wage determination in Canadian manufacturing. Real wage levels for international unions relative to domestic unions are estimated to decline from approximately 4 per cent higher in the 1960s to 4 per cent lower in the 1990s. International unions are also found to be more responsive to US economic conditions. Finally, affiliation with different union federations is a significant determinant of real wage outcomes with AFL CIO affiliated unions having lower real wages, on average.

Book Power Politics and Principles

Download or read book Power Politics and Principles written by Taylor Hollander and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2018-06-12 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set against the backdrop of the U.S. experience, Power, Politics, and Principles uses a transnational perspective to understand the passage and long-term implications of a pivotal labour law in Canada. Utilizing a wide array of primary materials and secondary sources, Hollander gets to the root of the policy-making process, revealing how the making of P.C. 1003 in 1944, a wartime order that forced employers to the collective bargaining table, involved real people with conflicting personalities and competing agendas. Each chapter of Power, Politics, and Principles begins with a quasi-fictional vignette to help the reader visualize historical context. Hollander pays particular attention to the central role that Mackenzie King played in the creation of P.C. 1003. Although most scholars describe the Prime Minister’s approach to policy decisions as calculating and opportunistic, Power, Politics, and Principles argues that Mackenzie King’s adherence to moderate principles resulted in a less hostile legal environment in Canada for workers and their unions in the long run, than a more far-reaching collective bargaining law in the United States.

Book The Wage Curve

Download or read book The Wage Curve written by David G. Blanchflower and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wage Curve casts doubt on some of the most important ideas in macroeconomics, labor economics, and regional economics. According to macroeconomic orthodoxy, there is a relationship between unemployment and the rate of change of wages. According to orthodoxy in labor economics and regional economics an area's wage is positively related to the amount of joblessness in the area. The Wage Curve suggests that both these beliefs are incorrect. Blanchflower and Oswald argue that the stable relationship is a downward-sloping convex curve linking local unemployment and the level of pay. Their study, one of the most intensive in the history of social science, is based on random samples that provide computerized information on nearly four million people from sixteen countries. Throughout, the authors systematically present evidence and possible explanations for their empirical law of economics.
