Book excerpt: Excerpt from Union, or the Divided Church Made One And here it will be permitted by the reader, and will be suflicient for the writer, to assume, that the oneness intended is, at least, a union of affection. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye love one another. Every instance of division, therefore, which ia capacitates Christians for reciprocating sincere expressions Of Christian love with any part of the Church, is an unequivocal breach Of this great law Of unity. Let the subject Of differ ence be ever so trivial in itself, and the breach apparently ever so narrow, still, if it reach down to the heart, it is schism: or let it embrace ever so many particulars, and some Of them even of considerable importance, still if it leave the heart entire, and allow a visible interchange of Christian offices, the sin is absent. The law of Christ on the subject sis-se definite, that we can lay our finger, so to speak, on the very point where the sin of schism begins; and, by comparing the existing state of the Christian Church with the express requirements of that law, we can determine, with all the'exactness of a chemical analysis, the places and the de grees in which it exists. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church Union, Vol. 24: November, 1897 But, better yet, we would appeal to all college students, of true aims and gentle natures, to combine in a deter mined effort to make an end of this coarse and degrading system. We are well persuaded that it is the baser class of students who perpetuate the custom. Surely there ought to be enough of character and influence with the better class of men, backed as they would be by the faculty, to make the thing impossible in the future. The sentiment of Thomas Arnold, that it was not necessary that Rugby have two hundred or one hundred or fifty students, but it was necessary that it be a school of gen tlemen, might easily be made so prevalent as to sweep away such a low disgrace as hazing. We cannot but feel that the best men in college have either not realized the shame of the thing, or not realized their power to make an end of it. We have heard how much has been done by putting the students on their honor, and leaving much of the discipline of the college in the hands of the students themselves. This seems the very triumph of discipline. It would appear as if this same method could sweep hazing out of a college, amid the jeers and contempt of the solid mass of students. We would further suggest the carrying the war into Africa, by taking very special pains to receive and care for the new men, by laying out plans to make their eu trance as agreeable as possible, and by making the new friends graciously fill up the void caused by the home and friends left behind. This is the way of the true humanity much better, it is the way of the good God Himself. Toleration and shall the world be converted before Missions. The end of the century? Shall the world be converted in ten years? Shall it be converted in a hundred years A vast deal of the answer to this question is going to be given by the progress of church union. A house divided against itself cannot stand at home, much less grow stronger abroad. An intelligent Hindoo or Japanese, invited to Christianity, might well ask, Which? Which Christianity of them all is it, that I should turn unto? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. C. L., And the Author Here has Sprung up in many quarters an earnest feeling in favor of the reunion of Christendom Thoughtful persons readily admit that the condition of the Christian world is by no means satisfactory. The numerous divisions in the visible Church, the frequent controversies and heart burnings which occur among Christian people, and the small progress made in the evangelization of the world, indicate that, in some way; full justice has not been done to the Gospel system. It is not surprising, in the circumstances, that some have been led to turn to the organic union of the Churches of Christendom as a panacea for the evils which are seen to exist. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Gilded Age America, rampant inequality gave rise to a new form of Christianity, one that sought to ease the sufferings of the poor not simply by saving their souls, but by transforming society. In Union Made, Heath W. Carter advances a bold new interpretation of the origins of American Social Christianity. While historians have often attributed the rise of the Social Gospel to middle-class ministers, seminary professors, and social reformers, this book places working people at the very center of the story. The major characters--blacksmiths, glove makers, teamsters, printers, and the like--have been mostly forgotten, but as Carter convincingly argues, their collective contribution to American Social Christianity was no less significant than that of Walter Rauschenbusch or Jane Addams. Leading readers into the thick of late-19th-century Chicago's tumultuous history, Carter shows that countless working-class believers participated in the heated debates over the implications of Christianity for industrializing society, often with as much fervor as they did in other contests over wages and the length of the workday. The city's trade unionists, socialists, and anarchists advanced theological critiques of laissez faire capitalism and protested "scab ministers" who cozied up to the business elite. Their criticisms compounded church leaders' anxieties about losing the poor, such that by the turn-of-the-century many leading Christians were arguing that the only way to salvage hopes of a Christian America was for the churches to soften their position on "the labor question." As denomination after denomination did just that, it became apparent that the Social Gospel was, indeed, ascendant--from below. At a time when the fate of the labor movement and rising economic inequality are once more pressing social concerns, Union Made opens the door for a new way forward--by changing the way we think about the past.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Plea for Union and the Present Crisis The Disciples of Christ are old enough as a religious body to understand something of their place in the programme of American Christianity, as judged by their past career and their present standing; and no moment is more favorable for taking inventory of their position and promise than this hour, In which the two centuries meet. Are the people who comprise the membership of this communion content with the record already made? If they are, is there anything more to be sought for the future i If not content, how shall their purposes be realized? No one will deny that much has been done. The story of the eighty years since this reformation began is thrilling. From a feeble, protesting body we have become a mighty folk. From the state of an infant crying in the night, an infant crying for the light. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I have heard all the presidents from the days of Grover Cleveland, who was one of the greatest of American presidents, but I have heard no such utterance on the abundant life as was spoken by President Franklin D. Book The Church of Social Union Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Church of Social Union Classic Reprint written by F. D. Huntington and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church of Social Union The Church Social Union is a body of Churchmen devoted to the study of social problems. Among the many guilds and brotherhoods of the Church it is peculiar in having no definite scheme of action. It believes that action is often untimely and wasteful through lack of knowledge, and that in the presence of new and strange conditions, time may be saved and power gained by a patient, cautious, thorough examination alike of social ills and of the remedies proposed to relieve them. Individually its members may entertain what theories they please and do what they list to put such theories into practice, but as a union they have no other aim than the knowledge which brings wisdom. And while this aim seems over-academic and vague, especially to us Americans whose quick thought jumps to instant act, and has scarcely any other way of proving its truth than by success of action, yet when we consider how likely such thinking is to be crude and such conduct rash, how difficult is the repair of a foolish deed once done, and how much influence the doer and his good intentions lose by the folly; above all, when we consider that the Church herself is represented by her priests and is charged with their blunders, and may be thus robbed of the confidence of men, which is her opportunity to help them with a sure and divine relief, - when we consider these things, the consecration of earnest minds to study may appear quite practical enough to commend itself even to our fidgety American habits, with their tiresome glorification of "hustle." Book The Divided Mind of the Black Church

Download or read book The Divided Mind of the Black Church written by Raphael G. Warnock and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revealing look at the identity and mission of the Black church What is the true nature and mission of the church? Is its proper Christian purpose to save souls, or to transform the social order? This question is especially fraught when the church is one built by an enslaved people and formed, from its beginning, at the center of an oppressed community’s fight for personhood and freedom. Such is the central tension in the identity and mission of the Black church in the United States. For decades the Black church and Black theology have held each other at arm’s length. Black theology has emphasized the role of Christian faith in addressing racism and other forms of oppression, arguing that Jesus urged his disciples to seek the freedom of all peoples. Meanwhile, the Black church, even when focused on social concerns, has often emphasized personal piety rather than social protest. With the rising influence of white evangelicalism, biblical fundamentalism, and the prosperity gospel, the divide has become even more pronounced. In The Divided Mind of the Black Church, Raphael G. Warnock, Senior Pastor of the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, the spiritual home of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., traces the historical significance of the rise and development of Black theology as an important conversation partner for the Black church. Calling for honest dialogue between Black and womanist theologians and Black pastors, this fresh theological treatment demands a new look at the church’s essential mission.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essay on the Union of Church: And State If by any of my expressions I have nu necessarily wounded the feelings of any Christian brother, I ask him to forgive me. If I have unconsciously fallen into any exag geration, I deeply deplore it. Throughout the work I have made a clear distinction between evangelical and unevangelical cler gymen; between those who preach the Gos pel and those who do not preach it. No spurious liberality, no fear of censure, should obliterate the distinction; yet many, doubt less, who are not ranked among the evan gelical party, who do not support their insti tutions, and who do not usually act with them, may be converted and faithful ministers of Christ.
