Download or read book From the Folks Who Brought You the Weekend written by Priscilla Murolo and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2018-08-28 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newly updated: “An enjoyable introduction to American working-class history.” —The American Prospect Praised for its “impressive even-handedness”, From the Folks Who Brought You the Weekend has set the standard for viewing American history through the prism of working people (Publishers Weekly, starred review). From indentured servants and slaves in seventeenth-century Chesapeake to high-tech workers in contemporary Silicon Valley, the book “[puts] a human face on the people, places, events, and social conditions that have shaped the evolution of organized labor”, enlivened by illustrations from the celebrated comics journalist Joe Sacco (Library Journal). Now, the authors have added a wealth of fresh analysis of labor’s role in American life, with new material on sex workers, disability issues, labor’s relation to the global justice movement and the immigrants’ rights movement, the 2005 split in the AFL-CIO and the movement civil wars that followed, and the crucial emergence of worker centers and their relationships to unions. With two entirely new chapters—one on global developments such as offshoring and a second on the 2016 election and unions’ relationships to Trump—this is an “extraordinarily fine addition to U.S. history [that] could become an evergreen . . . comparable to Howard Zinn’s award-winning A People’s History of the United States” (Publishers Weekly). “A marvelously informed, carefully crafted, far-ranging history of working people.” —Noam Chomsky

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A city known historically for its ethnic diversity, Fayetteville has truly served as a leader and model in the state by providing opportunity to the African-American community. During the South's antebellum era, freedmen and local slaves established a strong black identity in the city, one that would grow cosmopolitan and evolve over the decades, surviving wars, depressions, and social inequalities. This work, with over 200 images, relates the black contribution to the city, featuring its earliest civic leaders, some of its older schools, such as Fayetteville State University, and a few of its outstanding citizens.
Download or read book 150 Years of Eastern Oregon History written by Joseph H. Labadie and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-25 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a real story about an ordinary family from Albia, Iowa, who in 1862 crossed the Oregon Trail and settled in the lower Powder River Valley in what today is Baker City, Oregon. Within two years, family members were part of a thriving dry-goods and mercantile business in the gold-mining town of Mormon Basin, selling rubber boots, shovels, and liquor to both American and Chinese miners. By the late 1860s, the easy gold had been panned and sluiced out so the miners moved on to chase bigger dreams in newer places. So too did some of the family members; they sold their business interests and with a saddlebag full of gold rode north to Umatilla County, Oregon, where in 1871 they started a ranch and cattle business. Portions of James Shumway’s Couse Creek Ranch near Milton-Freewater are still owned by descendants; it is an Oregon State Centennial Ranch. This book uses old photographs, letters, documents, business journals, personal diaries, and contemporary research to recount 150 years of Barton–Shumway family history in eastern Oregon. It is a story told through the lives of some of the real people who survived it.

Download or read book Scotch Plains and Fanwood written by Richard Bousquet and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1995-10-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating new addition to the Images of America series offers a glimpse into the unique history of Scotch Plains and Fanwood, New Jersey. This wonderful new book contains more than 200 fascinating photographs, maps, and prints and brings to life the people, places, and events which have defined Scotch Plains and Fanwood over the centuries. These images invite us to explore the area's rich history from the time of its first settlement, in 1684, to the present day. Scotch Plains and Fanwood were originally one community, also encompassing the area now known as Feltville or Glenside Park. From the beginning, the region played a critical role in American history. The Battle of the Short Hills, from June 14 to June 30, 1777, between the British under General Howe and the Revolutionary Army under George Washington, took place here. During the nineteenth century, Scotch Plains became an important stop on the Swift Sure stage line between New York and Philadelphia. As New York City burgeoned during the nineteenth century and the railroad arrived in Central New Jersey, Scotch Plains and Fanwood became a bedroom community of the metropolis. Finally, in 1895, Fanwood was chartered independently. Later, Feltville became part of the Union County Park System. Local authors Richard and Suzanne Bousquet have brought together a unique collection of photographs and maps from both the Historical Society of Scotch Plains and Fanwood and from private collections. They have combined this superb collection with informative captions to create a fascinating journey down memory lane that will be enjoyed by old and young, resident and visitor alike.

Download or read book From Riches to Rags at a Time of Prosperity written by Frederick Zimmerman and published by F & J Zimmerman Co. This book was released on 2011-08-05 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the framework of an increasingly troubled world, this manuscript presents a series of essays written over a twenty-year period offering some practical, non-partisan suggestions as to how our country, and other countries like it can pull together to improve the situations of our citizens, our nation, and our communities. The book suggests that the solutions to the problems we face do not fit neatly into any one political camp, but instead require innovation, system redesign, and fair mindedness on the part of both politicians and citizens. Informed world citizens are demanding far more objective analyses of our policies, our actions, and the values we employ in pursuing the policies we do. Should those of us in leadership fail to provide those valuable insights, the world is likely to deprive us of our leadership role. The title, From Riches to Rags at a Time of Prosperity, was purposely chosen. There is still time for us to modify our behavior. But, if we misread or ignore world events, we will be poorer as the time available for improvement is quite finite. The United States is currently the world's largest debtor by a substantial margin. Our prosperity is largely based on the rapid depletion of liquid fossil fuels which are likely to be virtually fully exhausted this century. Our education system is sub-par. Our retirement promises are vastly in excess of what we can afford. Our environment is eroding. Though most US citizens are comparatively prosperous at the moment, we are gradually transitioning to much less prosperous circumstances From Riches to Rags at a Time of Prosperity. The book is divided into eight major parts. The Introduction includes a brief history of some of the earlier writings in the field of management with particular emphasis on our responsibilities as managers. Part Two deals with the economy and what we may have to do to sustain prosperity for the world's citizens. Part Three includes some essays written in response to the euphoria of the stock markets. part Four deals with manufacturing and its role in an integrated society. Part Five discusses the role of business management in a wholesome society along with some suggestions and caveats for the practice of management. Part Six reviews the importance of education and the responsibilities of those of us who are educators. Part Seven deals with a few of the nation's pressing public policy questions. Part Eight closes with a question: Will real leadership emerge?
