Book Financial Accounting and Management Control

Download or read book Financial Accounting and Management Control written by Fredrik Nilsson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-02-20 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about financial accounting and management control and how these two information systems are related as well as how their objectives conflict. At the most fundamental level, the objective of financial accounting is to provide owners and funders with comparable information on a company's value creation. The aim of management control, on the other hand, is to give the board, senior executives and employees unique information for strategy formulation and implementation. One often-mentioned negative effect is the risk of financial accounting affecting management control design and use, making it less relevant for decision-making at the company level. The book provides an analysis of the complex relationship between financial accounting and management control. The analysis is based on theoretical reasoning as well as several examples of how financial accounting standards affect not only the annual report but also the control system. An interesting, and perhaps unexpected conclusion is that management control seems to affect financial accounting almost as much as financial accounting affects management control. These complex relationships, which can influence the design and use of both financial accounting and management control, are discussed in detail in this book.

Book Financial Reporting Uniformity

Download or read book Financial Reporting Uniformity written by Marcus L. Caylor and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We develop a Compustat-based financial reporting uniformity measure based on the presentation of common financial statement line items. We define uniformity as the average ratio of a firm's pairwise overlaps of non-missing Compustat data items with peer firms. Emphasizing the conceptual difference between uniformity and comparability, we find that uniformity is positively associated with output-based accounting comparability, and this association is impaired with high R&D intensity and frequent losses. We demonstrate that our uniformity measure is positively associated with analyst coverage and analyst forecast accuracy, and negatively associated with analyst forecast dispersion, consistent with presentational uniformity being related to information processing efficiencies. We partition our uniformity measure into separate income statement and balance sheet components. We find that income statement uniformity is associated with greater analyst coverage, while balance sheet uniformity is associated with higher forecast accuracy and lower forecast dispersion.

This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An innovative new valuation framework with truly useful economic indicators The End of Accounting and the Path Forward for Investors and Managers shows how the ubiquitous financial reports have become useless in capital market decisions and lays out an actionable alternative. Based on a comprehensive, large-sample empirical analysis, this book reports financial documents' continuous deterioration in relevance to investors' decisions. An enlightening discussion details the reasons why accounting is losing relevance in today's market, backed by numerous examples with real-world impact. Beyond simply identifying the problem, this report offers a solution—the Value Creation Report—and demonstrates its utility in key industries. New indicators focus on strategy and execution to identify and evaluate a company's true value-creating resources for a more up-to-date approach to critical investment decision-making. While entire industries have come to rely on financial reports for vital information, these documents are flawed and insufficient when it comes to the way investors and lenders work in the current economic climate. This book demonstrates an alternative, giving you a new framework for more informed decision making. Discover a new, comprehensive system of economic indicators Focus on strategic, value-creating resources in company valuation Learn how traditional financial documents are quickly losing their utility Find a path forward with actionable, up-to-date information Major corporate decisions, such as restructuring and M&A, are predicated on financial indicators of profitability and asset/liabilities values. These documents move mountains, so what happens if they're based on faulty indicators that fail to show the true value of the company? The End of Accounting and the Path Forward for Investors and Managers shows you the reality and offers a new blueprint for more accurate valuation.

Book Uniform Financial Reporting Standards

Download or read book Uniform Financial Reporting Standards written by Shyam Sunder and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Financial reporting environment of the world is dominated today by a top down push for uniform financial reporting standards. The advantages of uniformity and monopoly standards have been well-publicized compared to their disadvantages. No language, accounting included, can flourish under the protective umbrella of punitive authority of state. Like languages and dictionaries, accounting and other social phenomena develop best through bottom up processes. We do not have enough the design knowledge to set standards whose consequences cannot be undone by adjusting transactions. Elimination of alternative accounting treatments prevents credible revelation of information through financial statements. Codification of accounting diminishes the judgment-honing function of class room discourse to promote rote memorization that drives away talent from the profession. Introduction of regulatory competition among alternative sets of financial standards may help improve accounting practice.

Book Financial Accounting

Book excerpt: FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING A Distillation of Experience by v 4 - GEORGE O. MAY Formerly senior partner, Price, Waterhouse Co., Certified Public Accountants lecturer at the Graduate School of Business Administration, Harvard University NEW YORK THE MACMILLAN COMPANY 1946 THE MACMILLAN COMPANY. All rights reserved no part of this book may be reproduced in any form without permission in writing from the publisher, except by a reviewer who wishes to quote brief passages in connection with a review written for inclusion in magazine or newspaper. Reprinted December, 1947 Reprinted May, 1949 PRINTED IN THE UNITED STATES OF A1CVUCA In this volume the American Institute of Account ants is commonly referred to as the Institute, the American Accounting Association as the Associa tion, and the National Association of Railroad and Utilities Commissioners as the NARUC. Foreword FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING is now generally recognized as be ing primarily historical in character and as having for its most important function the extraction and presentation of the essence of the financial experience of businesses, so that decisions affecting the present and the future may be taken in the light of the past. The rules of accounting, even more than those of law, are the product of experience rather than of logic. Similarly, this book is an attempt to extract and present the essence of an experience in financial accounting in the hope that it may be helpful to those called upon to deal with the problems of the future. It is not the result of a study and appraisal of authorities, and the views that are expressed are those of its author alone indeed, publication has been delayed until formal ties and official positionswhich might have been deemed, to imply more than a personal responsibility for them have been relinquished. In part, it is based on lectures delivered at the Graduate School of Busi ness Administration of Harvard University and papers writ ten for other purposes since 1936. A few passages have been reproduced from the volume which those who were then partners, with generous insight, prepared in that year to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the authors assumption of senior partnership. The writing of such a book seemed to be justified by the fact that the experience on which it is based extended over a period of exceptional interest and was enriched by close association with men of eminence here and abroad, not only vii viii FOREWORD in accounting but in government, business, finance, law, and economics. The obligation owed to those who have con tributed to that experience is great, but can be expressed to them here only collectively. Grateful recognition must, however, be given to the guidance, friendship, and inspiration of Arthur Lowes Dickinson, who by his abilities, his writings, and above all, by his example, earned an outstanding place among the independent accountants of America, to whom this book is gratefully dedicated.
