As IWO prepares to unleash the most audacious terrorist attack in history, CIA operatives in Saudi Arabia scramble to uncover their diabolical plot. Despite the evidence, the Washington bureaucracy demands time-consuming confirmation. As this captivating tale of international intrigue unfolds, it's a race against time to save the Western world. "As someone who enjoys thrillers and international espionage, I was caught up in the plot from the very beginning! It is exciting and entirely within the realm of possibility. As a pastor, I was intrigued with Christianson's sensitive portrayal of the world's three great religions and how the faith of an individual can influence world events. To see a novel stay true to theological realities is a blessing! An exciting and engaging read!" Dwight "Ike" Reighard, Pastor, Author, and CEO of MUST Ministries "Armageddon convincingly portrayed. Breathtaking in its scope by connecting all the dots of international terrorism. A must read for anyone with interest or background in political-military affairs." Colonel Mike Boyce, USMC (Retired)

Book The Day Begins at Sunset

Download or read book The Day Begins at Sunset written by Barbara Freyer Stowasser and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fullest account ever written of the fascinating nexus between Islam and Time, this is a major contribution to the wider history of ideas and religion. Night and day, and the twelve lunar months of the year, are'appointed times for the believing people'. Reading the sky for the prayers of the hour has thus for Muslims been a constant reminder of God's providence and power. In her absorbing and illuminating new book, the late Barbara Freyer Stowasser examines the various ways in which Islam has structured, ordered and measured Time. Drawing on examples from Judaism and Christianity, as well as the ancient world, the author shows that while systems of time facilitate the orderly function of vastly different civilizations, in Islam they have always been fundamental. Among other topics, she discusses the Muslim lunar calendar; the rise of the science of astronomy; the remarkable career of al-Biruni, greatest authority in Muslim perceptions of Time; and the impact of technologies like the astrolabe, Indian numerals and paper. The fullest account ever written of the fascinating nexus between Islam and Time, this is a major contribution to the wider history of ideas and religion.

Book The Global Transformation of Time

Download or read book The Global Transformation of Time written by Vanessa Ogle and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-12 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As new networks of railways, steamships, and telegraph communications brought distant places into unprecedented proximity, previously minor discrepancies in local time-telling became a global problem. Vanessa Ogle’s chronicle of the struggle to standardize clock times and calendars from 1870 to 1950 highlights the many hurdles that proponents of uniformity faced in establishing international standards. Time played a foundational role in nineteenth-century globalization. Growing interconnectedness prompted contemporaries to reflect on the annihilation of space and distance and to develop a global consciousness. Time—historical, evolutionary, religious, social, and legal—provided a basis for comparing the world’s nations and societies, and it established hierarchies that separated “advanced” from “backward” peoples in an age when such distinctions underwrote European imperialism. Debates and disagreements on the varieties of time drew in a wide array of observers: German government officials, British social reformers, colonial administrators, Indian nationalists, Arab reformers, Muslim scholars, and League of Nations bureaucrats. Such exchanges often heightened national and regional disparities. The standardization of clock times therefore remained incomplete as late as the 1940s, and the sought-after unification of calendars never came to pass. The Global Transformation of Time reveals how globalization was less a relentlessly homogenizing force than a slow and uneven process of adoption and adaptation that often accentuated national differences.

Download or read book The Islamic World written by John L. Esposito and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-05-13 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the events of September 11, 2001, students and people everywhere are filled with questions about Islam. What do Muslims believe? Who is Osama bin Laden? What is a jihad? Even though Islam is a major religion with more than one billion followers worldwide and more than six million in the United States alone, there is still uncertainty and misunderstanding about the ideas, tenets, and practice of Islam. Understanding Islam and the people who believe in it has become crucially important in the greater world. The Islamic World: Past and Present is the ideal source for fostering understanding and answering questions. John Esposito's acclaimed four-volume The Encyclopedia of the Modern Islamic World (1995) set the standard in references on Islam. Adapted from this award-winning set, The Islamic World: Past and Present brings all the scholarship and information of the original to general readers and college and high school students. In addition to the more approachable language and user-friendly page layout, this reference covers events and changes of the last eight years. It also includes entirely new entries to provide coverage of the pre-modern world of Islam. Containing more than 300 articles, it provides an excellent, comprehensive resource for gaining understanding into a belief system that seems mysterious and incomprehensible to many.
