Book excerpt: General theorem providing a mathematical basis for a grand Unified Field Theory (GUT) is presented. The proof of the theorem is shown to be a recent work entitled 'Generalised Mathematical Proof of Einstein's Theory Using a New Group Theory', which has been reviewed by the American Mathematical Society. This work provides generic solutions to the unified field, from which both the Newtonian and Einsteinian gravitational fields seem to be recoverable. Furthermore, the electromagnetic field seems to be recoverable also from these solutions. Since the investigation does not assume the existence of particles a priori, matter could therefore be interpreted as high field intensity. Therefore, nuclear force fields (strong and weak) seem to be included. The solution seems to mathematically represent the modification of space-time predicted by Einstein's general relativity theory.

In What Is Systematic Theology? Robert M. Doran attempts to articulate and respond to these questions. Doran begins by accepting four emphases presented by Lonergan concerning systematics: first, that its principal function is the hypothetical and analogical understanding of the mysteries of faith; second, that it should begin with those mysteries of faith that have received dogmatic status; third, that it must proceed in the 'order of teaching' rather than the 'order of discovery'; and last, that it must be explanatory rather than merely descriptive. He then addresses questions that are raised by each of these emphases. What Is Systematic Theology? is the most thorough attempt undertaken to date to advance Lonergan's program for systematics, fully in the spirit of his work but addressing issues that he left to others. Doran's idea of a core set of meanings for systematics – or a 'unified field structure' – is highly original, as is the integration of the systematic ideal and contemporary historical consciousness.

In particular, this book seeks to reconcile the exciting discoveries of the first part of the Twentieth Century (including relativity and the Big Bang) with the perplexing discoveries of the second half of that troubled century, when strange and paradoxical solutions were offered by science (most notably quantum physics and Heisenberg's principle of uncertainty). The conclusions of the book can be summarized by saying that it is an admittedly immodest effort to compile a "theory of everything." Weaving together the theories of humanity's quest for harmonious understanding of nature, its origins and its destiny entailed many mysteries; solving those mysteries often required advancing novel ideas. Perhaps the most creative of all is the proposition that the Big Bang produced not just space and time, but order as well. This proposition is buttressed by the latest findings in astronomy, which suggest that order came quickly to our world, as if delivered in a package, complete with ribbons and wrapping intended for our appreciation and use. Does that mean that the package was created by anomnipotent being - the god of theology? The answer to that question is not tackled until the last two chapters. The first eight tackle a more elementary question: whether our species differs from the animals merely in the sense of being a more sophisticated aggregation of organic life, as Darwin argued. That view is contrasted to one characterized as Integral Humanism, a philosophical framework which offers the opposing argument, under which humans are understood to be an unpredictable and wonderful mixture of three distinct dimensions: mind, matter and spirit.

As well as being a healing and freeing life principle and practice, The Awareness Principle is also a new foundational principle for the sciences and religion - offering the sole possible philosophical basis for both a new Theology and a truly scientific 'Theory of Everything'. For the most fundamental scientific fact is not the objective existence of a manifest universe of bodies in space and time but awareness of that universe. In contrast to all current pseudo-scientific attempts to explain awareness or 'consciousness' however, The Awareness Principle is the recognition that awareness cannot - in principle - be explained by or reduced to any thing whatsoever that we are aware of, whether it be matter, energy or the human body and brain. Awareness is neither a by-product of our bodies and brains nor the private property of any being or beings - human or divine. What we call 'God' is neither 'Being' with a big 'B' nor some Supreme Being 'with' awareness. Instead God is awareness - and the entire universe its manifestation. And just as there can be nothing outside space or before time so there can be nothing outside or before the absolute and divine Awareness that is'God'. Neither the Big Bang of physics, the Big Being of philosophy nor a Supreme Being of the sort worshipped in the Abrahamic faiths - all expressions of 'The Being Principle' - can explain the fundamental nature of God and the Universe. The Awareness Principle can, based as it is on the recognition that: "The being of all things that exist in awareness in turn depends on awareness." (Abhinavagupta) Peter Wilberg's writings on 'The Awareness Principle', collected for the first time in this volume, reaffirm and rearticulate in a new and clear cut way a centuries-old understanding of Indian tantric philosophy - namely that the '1st Principle' of the universe is not matter or energy but the innate potentials and power (Shakti) of pure awareness (Shiva).
