Book excerpt: “In terrifying detail, Unholy illustrates how a vast network of white Christian nationalists plotted the authoritarian takeover of the American democratic system. There is no more timely book than this one.”—Janet Reitman, author of Inside Scientology Why did so many evangelicals turn out to vote for Donald Trump, a serial philanderer with questionable conservative credentials who seems to defy Christian values with his every utterance? To a reporter like Sarah Posner, who has been covering the religious right for decades, the answer turns out to be far more intuitive than one might think. In this taut inquiry, Posner digs deep into the radical history of the religious right to reveal how issues of race and xenophobia have always been at the movement’s core, and how religion often cloaked anxieties about perceived threats to a white, Christian America. Fueled by an antidemocratic impulse, and united by this narrative of reverse victimization, the religious right and the alt-right support a common agenda–and are actively using the erosion of democratic norms to roll back civil rights advances, stock the judiciary with hard-right judges, defang and deregulate federal agencies, and undermine the credibility of the free press. Increasingly, this formidable bloc is also forging ties with European far right groups, giving momentum to a truly global movement. Revelatory and engrossing, Unholy offers a deeper understanding of the ideological underpinnings and forces influencing the course of Republican politics. This is a book that must be read by anyone who cares about the future of American democracy.

Book excerpt: In 2002, an ancient limestone box called the James Ossuary was trumpeted on the world's front pages as the first material evidence of the existence of Jesus Christ. Today it is exhibit number one in a forgery trial involving millions of dollars worth of high-end, Biblical era relics, some of which literally re-wrote Near Eastern history and which could lead to the incarceration of some very wealthy men and embarrass major international institutions, including the British Museum and Sotheby's. Set in Israel, with its 30,000 archaeological digs crammed with biblical-era artifacts, and full of colorful characters—scholars, evangelicals, detectives, and millionaire collectors—Unholy Business tells the incredibly story of what the Israeli authorities have called "the fraud of the century." It takes readers into the murky world of Holy Land relic dealing, from the back alleys of Jerusalem's Old City to New York's Fifth Avenue, and reveals biblical archaeology as it is pulled apart by religious believers on one side and scientists on the other.

Book Unholy Hands on the Bible

Download or read book Unholy Hands on the Bible written by Dean J. Burgon and published by Sovereign Grace Publishers,. This book was released on 1990 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do you get when you buy this volume? You get all six of the Works of Dean John W. Burgon, which in effect gives you an excellent introduction to Textual Criticism in The Traditional Text of the New Testament. In The Causes of the Corruption of the Traditional Text of the Gospels you will learn how the Gnostics, Manecheans, Ebionites, Ariams, and other heretics sought to halt the spread of Christianity by putting out corrupt manuscripts. Discover the motivation that caused the critics to elevate these adulterated manuscripts to a place of adoration. See for yourself the overwhelming evidence against the thousands of changes in the popular new versions that dilute the Scriptures. The Last Twelve Verses According to the Gospel of Mark shows that over 2,000 manuscripts and as many Greek lectionaries contain these verses without any brackets or doubting footnotes. Did you know that except for the NKJV, MKJV, LITV, the nine other major new versions have bracketed the last 12 verses of Mark (or in a footnote indicated that they do not believe they are authentic). WHY? It's a mystery. There are only three (3) Greek manuscripts that do not have these verses. And in 200 pages of proofs, Burgon shows that those two are so edited at the place where these verses belong that anyone can see the scribes were looking at these verses in the older mss. they were copying. As Dr. Gordon H. Clark wrote, If a version brackets these verses, then you know that they are not going by the evidence. The Revision Revised is a Critique of the English Revised Version of 1881, with additional applications to the Modern Translations. There is an excellent critique of the Westcott and Hort textualtheories. Proof of the Genuineness of God Manifested in the Flesh contains an unanswered and unanswerable defense of 1 Timothy 3:16. The Woman Taken In Adultery gives a defense of the authenticity of John 7:53-8:11. Conflation and The 'Neutral' Text by Edward Miller, M.A. gives an additional critique of Dr. Hort's theories. Get this volume, and arm yourself to fight for the God-breathed words that God has preserved for you that you might have life and faith. Every one of His words are precious. We need not give up thousands of them...

  • ISBN : 9781675646335
  • Pages : 250 pages

Download or read book Unholy Christianity written by Gerald Haug and published by . This book was released on 2020-02-22 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unholy Christianity: How the Church Corrupted the Gospel Two thousand years ago, Jesus declared, "I will build My Church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." Yet, the fractured nature of today's church with its many sects and denominations begs the question: Are we the church Jesus built? Or have sin, egos, compromise, and ignorance ushered in an unholiness that is leading us astray from the church Christ called us to be? Unholy Christianity offers a candid depiction of Christianity, beginning with the apostles, journeying through the Medieval period and Reformation, and ending with the present. Gerald Haug examines the history of Christianity by investigating the actions, decisions, men, movements, and practices of past Christians that led to the doctrine, divisions, and sects we find today. Unholy Christianity examines Christianity from a global perspective rather than just the narrow lens of one's own culture. This insightful look into Christianity's rich history will help the reader accurately understand how both correct and incorrect actions of the past shape the church of the present. Unholy Christianity will build your faith, sharpen your knowledge, and help you make sense of church history and world events. You will be challenged to never do church the same way again!

Book excerpt: Paul urged Corinthian Christians to have no partnership with demons. Today Corinth's occultism returns in a psychological guise, often a Christian guise. Lois Chan demonstrates how the occult has transformed itself into enlightened modern psychological techniques, promising supernatural powers to gain mastery, control over others and circumstances. Veneered over by selective biblical quotations, occult promises offer empowerment so that Jesus' petition, "Father, not My will, but Thy will be done," is to be recast as "My will be done."

Book Unholy Writ

Download or read book Unholy Writ written by T. Joyner Drolsum and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-11-07 with total page 824 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During our brief and perilous journey ex irritum ad irritum, how are we to find, what the German philosopher Martin Heidegger (Sein und Zeit) would call, the true approach to being? How do we answer the question posed by the Apostle Thomas when he asked how can we know the way (Jn. 14:5)? In other words, how should we fill that parenthesis of infinitesimal brevity, which James Joyce (Ulysses) maintained, demarcates each of our lives? The Bible has often been put forth as a supposedly infallible guidebook charting the correct path to an authentic existence (e.g. 2 Tim. 3:16-17). According to its proponents, Scripture is an absolutely dependable life-manual because it is the word of God (Summa Theologica, First Part, Q. 1, Art. 10). However, close inspection of the Bible calls into question its divine authorship; and, thus, its reliability as an accurate roadmap for the soul. In fact, under close examination it proves to be nothing more than a mundane and cobbled together collection of archaic superstitions beginning with the outlandish speculations of Moses concerning the creation of the world and ending with the maniacal ravings of John regarding its destruction. Exposing the true nature of Holy Writ was the main purpose for writing Unholy Writ. The modus operandi for this expos involved a thoroughgoing critical analysis of Scripture. The results from such a careful consideration of its contents clearly demonstrated that any claim that the Bible is some sort of sacrosanct ethical vade mecum is completely invalid. Specifically, the multiple contradictions and absurdities contained in the Bible confer an unreliability upon it that undermines its function as a guide for anything, let alone as some sort of moral map for the journey through life. Furthermore, many of the ideas that are promoted in Holy Writ are actually spiritually harmful. In addition, unless the condoned misogyny, violence, intolerance, injustice, and cruelty can be removed, then it is difficult to view the Scriptures as anything like an unwavering celestial beacon that clearly lights the way through the moral fog that at times engulfs our lives. Moreover, the many errors that it contains, including those about the natural world, undermine the pivotal claim that the Bible is divinely inspired.

Book Christians Against Christianity

Download or read book Christians Against Christianity written by Obery M. Hendricks, Jr. and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2021-07-06 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timely and galvanizing work that examines how right-wing evangelical Christians have veered from an admirable faith to a pernicious, destructive ideology. Today’s right-wing Evangelical Christianity stands as the very antithesis of the message of Jesus Christ. In his new book, Christians Against Christianity, best-selling author and religious scholar Obery M. Hendricks Jr. challenges right-wing evangelicals on the terrain of their own religious claims, exposing the falsehoods, contradictions, and misuses of the Bible that are embedded in their rabid homophobia, their poorly veiled racism and demonizing of immigrants and Muslims, and their ungodly alliance with big business against the interests of American workers. He scathingly indicts the religious leaders who helped facilitate the rise of the notoriously unchristian Donald Trump, likening them to the “court jesters” and hypocritical priestly sycophants of bygone eras who unquestioningly supported their sovereigns’ every act, no matter how hateful or destructive to those they were supposed to serve. In the wake of the deadly insurrectionist attack on the US Capitol, Christians Against Christianity is a clarion call to stand up to the hypocrisy of the evangelical Right, as well as a guide for Christians to return their faith to the life-affirming message that Jesus brought and died for. What Hendricks offers is a provocative diagnosis, an urgent warning that right-wing evangelicals’ aspirations for Christian nationalist supremacy are a looming threat, not only to Christian decency but to democracy itself. What they offer to America is anything but good news.

Book Is Your Christianity Working

Download or read book Is Your Christianity Working written by Billy Prewitt and published by TrinityBibleSchool.com. This book was released on 2019-12-07 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered why some Christians seem to be so unsuccessful in their Christian walk? Maybe you have had your own difficulties. This little booklet briefly examines four reasons why many people struggle. “Is Your Christianity Working?” is a short booklet that examines a question that I have pondered for a number of years. I often wondered why so many people who profess to be believers struggle in their faith. In my search for answers to this subject, I have found four distinct realities that can account for many of the problems that assail believers. The booklet is divided into four short chapters that are based on these realities in the form of questions: 1. Are You Really Saved? 2. Are You a Backslider? 3. Have You Made an Unholy Alliance? 4. Do You Have a Stronghold? Obviously, if you, or someone you know, has fallen victim to any of these, the result is a weak faith at best and a delusion of security at worst. While this little booklet is not meant to cover everything, it is my hope that it will at least shed the light of truth enough to start the needful changes. If any of these apply to you, take action today.

Book The Unholy Trinity

Download or read book The Unholy Trinity written by Thomas Van Dyke and published by Elm Hill. This book was released on 2020-04-28 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book I try to describe, as clearly and simply as possible, the Christian journey from a life lived in worldliness and defeat to a life lived in and through the grace of God. I use the Biblical story of Israel’s journey from Egypt to Canaan in an allegorical sense to show how God, through the activities and resources of the Holy Trinity, tries to bring us to that place of living in grace, and how the devil, through the unholy trinity (the world, the flesh, and demonic resistance) seeks to thwart that journey. I focus on three fronts in the battle between the two trinities. On the first front, the devil works indirectly through the world system (Egypt) to deny us our freedom that we have due to the atonement. Living under the illusion of pleasure, we end up in extreme bondage. On the second front, the devil works indirectly through our flesh (Amalek) to hinder us from following the leadership of the Holy Spirit as He attempts to guide us into God’s grace. On the third front, we can expect to experience a more direct conflict with the devil and his spiritual forces (Canaan). These demonic forces will try to oppose and negate all the benefits of God’s promised grace that comes into our lives through Christ. XXXXX

Book The Little Book of Unholy Questions

Download or read book The Little Book of Unholy Questions written by Jonathan M. S. Pearce and published by Anchor Books. This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan M.S. Pearce's second book (after Free Will?) continues along the same philosophical and theological vein, aiming to provide a cumulative case against the existence of God, and more specifically, God's triple characteristics of omniscience, omnipotence and omnibenevolence. Split into useful categories with an introduction to each category, these are questions that demand to be answered adequately and plausibly in order for the believer to retain a rationally-based faith. Pearce's easy writing style and explanation of philosophy, theology and science on the popular level make this book as enjoyable to read as it is thought-provoking. Does God change his mind when prayed to, and why has he never produced a miracle since biblical times that couldn't have occurred naturally anyway, like re-growing an amputee's leg? God only knows. "Pearce demands from God a rational explanation to all of the problems that seem illogical or incoherent. These are ... damningly challenging inconsistencies in the Christian narrative that necessarily antagonize any rational reader. If you are still or used to be Christian, "The Little Book of Unholy Questions" is an overview of the critical questions you need to be asking yourself." - Derek Murphy, Jesus Potter Harry Christ
