Book From Goethe to Gundolf

Download or read book From Goethe to Gundolf written by Roger Paulin and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2021-08-24 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Goethe to Gundolf: Essays on German Literature and Culture is a collection of Roger Paulin’s groundbreaking essays, spanning the last forty years. The work represents his major research interests of Romanticism and the reception of Shakespeare in Germany, but also explores a broader range of themes, from poetry and the public memorialization of poets to fairy stories - all meticulously researched, yet highly accessible. As a comprehensive examination of German literary history in the period 1700-1900, the collection not only includes accounts of the lives and work of Goethe, Schiller, the Schlegels, and Gundolf (amongst others), serving to nuance our understanding of these figures in history, but also considers diverse (and often underexplored) topics, from academic freedom to the rise of travel literature. The essays have been reformulated, corrected, and updated to add references to recent works. However, the core foundations of the originals remain, and just as when they were first published, the value of these essays – to researchers, students, and all those who are interested in German literary history – cannot be overstated.

Book The Meaning of Being Illuminati

Download or read book The Meaning of Being Illuminati written by Nicolas Laos and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book articulates a new research program, called “Ur-Illuminism,” which consists in an integrated and systematic study of humanity’s quest for “illumination,” namely, for the highest and noblest possible mode of being. Thus, it takes on the challenge of revising widely accepted ways of understanding and interpreting the ontological underpinnings of civilization and the ontological potential of humanity. It allows the reader to delve into a creative “rediscovery” of Platonism, medieval Christian mystics’ and scholars’ writings, and various “illuminist” systems, from the Orphic mystical cult to the European Enlightenment and thence to the eighteenth-century Illuminati fraternities and beyond. Moreover, the book studies major issues in the history of philosophy, politology, and esoteric systems (such as Hermeticism, the Kabbalah, alchemy, the Rosicrucian movement, Freemasonry, and the Bavarian Illuminati). It maintains that a postmodern “rediscovery” of premodern metaphysics, specifically, a postmodern esoteric theocracy (as distinct from old sacerdotalism and religious formalism), is the best bulwark against oppression and the ontological degradation of humanity, as well as the best path to the attainment of that wisdom and spiritual self-knowledge which constitute the existential integration and completion of the human being. In this context, it proposes a peculiar and intellectually fecund synthesis between Tory Anarchism, Libertarianism, Platonism, and Byzantine Hesychasm, as they are elucidated here.

Book Forster a Collection of Critical Essays

Download or read book Forster a Collection of Critical Essays written by Malcolm Bradbury and published by Englewood Cliffs, N.J : Prentice-Hall. This book was released on 1966 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manslaughter, blackmail, violent sex, sudden death: out of materials which might have served a lesser author as the basis for mere melodrama, E. M. Forster created literary vehicles which convey the reader with near-celestial ease to psychological realms as diverse as the London drawing-room and the Indian cave of revelation. The essays collected here range from early commentaries introducing Forster to an American audience, to more recent essays illuminating the subtlety and resourcefulness of his fictional method, the acute modernity of his moral and intellectual concerns. Disputing a long-held view that Forster is intellectually a Victorian, in bondage to the liberal pieties he portrayed so well, these critics point to his capacity for rigorous self-scrutiny and detached observation of those very institutions and ideas so often associated with him. As they reveal new facets of Forster's accomplishment, these essays indicate why the twentieth century now recognizes him as one of its major literary figures. -- From publisher's description.
