Book Unfulfilled Aspirations

Download or read book Unfulfilled Aspirations written by Adham Saouli and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-30 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concepts and theories of what constitutes a 'Middle Power' have played a key part in explaining the identity, behavior and foreign policy roles of many states in the international system, including the United Kingdom, France, Australia and Brazil. But, with a few exceptions, these frameworks have failed to travel to scholarship on the Middle East, despite the theoretical and empirical potential that they offer for understanding regional dynamics. The first of its kind, this volume addresses that major gap by interrogating the conceptual, theoretical and empirical underpinnings of the concept of 'Middle Power' at a regional level. Composed of nine chapters, Unfulfilled Aspirations offers the conceptual and theoretical tools to examine 'Middle Powerhood' in the Middle East, as well as insightful empirical analyses of both 'traditional' Middle Powers in the region (Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Algeria) and new, aspiring ones (Qatar, the UAE). The contributors reveal that the Middle Powers of the Middle East have failed, despite their best efforts, to fulfill their regional aspirations.

Book Consuming Happiness

Download or read book Consuming Happiness written by Mehita Iqani and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-27 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a collection of scholarly writing on the meanings of happiness in relation to consumption. The concept of happiness in relation to consumption deserves critical attention. While administrative marketing scholars might take for granted the notion that consumption and brand engagement produces positive affects in consumers, such as enjoyment and thrill, more analysis and theoretical exploration are needed to shed light on what that satisfaction and pleasure means in the context of an increasingly unjust and unequal world. This question is particularly pressing in terms of exploring consumer cultures in the global south. The chapters in this volume explore how material practices link to structures of power and exploitation. Taken together, they offer nuanced insight into what notions of a good and fulfilling life mean both to individual consumers and to the societies in which they participate, especially when those societies are characterised by inequality and poverty alongside wealth and elite consumption. This collection places the spotlight on consumption practices, that is, the various forms of social action including communication and marketing that are implemented in everyday life, in relation to the market economy, with and through it. This book will be of great value to students and scholars who are interested in the everyday practices of consumption within a range of fields such as business and management, sociology, media and cultural studies. The chapters in this book were originally published in Consumption Markets & Culture.

Book Revolution in the Social Sciences

Download or read book Revolution in the Social Sciences written by Bernard Phillips and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2011-12-16 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revolution in the Social Sciences centers on integrating knowledge from sociology, psychology, anthropology, history, political science and economics in order to confront increasing worldwide problems that threaten all of us. That integration of knowledge of human behavior is essential for understanding those problems, given their enormous complexity coupled with the highly specialized nature of the social sciences and their limited communication across specialized fields. It carries further the ideas developed by the Sociological Imagination Group in the seven books it has published since its founding in 2000 (www.sociological-imagination.org): Beyond Sociology's Tower of Babel, Toward a Sociological Imagination, The Invisible Crisis of Contemporary Society, Understanding Terrorism, Armageddon or Evolution?Bureaucratic Culture and Escalating World Problems, and Saving Society. In addition to visible problems like war and terrorism with weapons of mass destruction that are becoming ever more threatening, there are relatively invisible problems. For example, there is an increasing gap between what people throughout the world want—including a decent standard of living and freedom from patterns of hatred like racism, sexism and ageism—and what they are in fact able to get. There is, then, an increasing aspirations-fulfillment gap, largely produced by the "revolution of rising expectations" over the past five centuries. Political leaders who attempt to confront problems can only make limited progress on them, largely because of the failure of social scientists to integrate their knowledge and thus yield the understanding of these complex problems that is required.

Book The Political Economy of Post COVID Life and Work in the Global South Pandemic and Precarity

Download or read book The Political Economy of Post COVID Life and Work in the Global South Pandemic and Precarity written by Sandya Hewamanne and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-03-14 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume highlights cascading effects of the pandemic and lockdown on informal economies of varied countries in the Global South. Uneven development after colonization, imperialism, and externally influenced conflict have caused many countries in the formally colonized or semi-occupied countries in the world to lag behind in wealth accumulation, investments in manufacturing, and technology. The fact that these countries were dragged into world market dynamics on an equal footing with already developed countries exacerbated these inequalities and saw the rapid burgeoning of informal economies. COVID-19 and the lockdown of western countries unravelled global production chains, resulting in hordes of workers in the Global South losing their livelihoods. Even people engaged in traditionally locally-bound economic activities, such as domestic work and sex work, found their livelihoods disappear. This volume brings together case studies from India, Brazil, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka to analyze global economic disruptions as they affected informal sector workers who were already largely invisible within state development policies. The chapters question whether existing models of neoliberal development are still conducive within the post-pandemic Global South as it grapples with rebuilding economies, livelihoods, institutions, and systems of governance.

Book Conditions of Happiness

Download or read book Conditions of Happiness written by R. Veenhoven and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the degree to which people take pleasure in life: in short 'happiness'. It tries to identify conditions that favor a positive appreciation of life. Thus it hopes to shed more light on a longstanding and intriguing ques tion and, possibly, to guide attempts to improve the human lot. During the preceding decades a growing number of investigations have dealt with this issue. As a result there is now a sizable body of data. Yet it is quite difficult to make sense of it. There is a muddle of theories, concepts and indicators, and many of the findings seem to be contradictory. This book attempts to bring some order into the field. The study draws on an inventory of empirical investigations which involved valid indicators of happiness; 245 studies are involved, which together yield some 4000 observations: for the main part correlational ones. These results are presented in full detail in the simultaneously published 'Databook of Happiness' (Veenhoven 1984). The present volume distils conclusions from that wealth of data. It tries to assess the reality value of the findings and the degree to which correlations reflect the conditions of happiness rather than the consequences of it. It then attempts to place the scattered findings in context. As such, this work is not a typical study of literature on happiness.

Book Developmental Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with Adults

Download or read book Developmental Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with Adults written by Janet M. Zarb and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developmental Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with Adults outlines a new cognitive approach that combines existing CBT theory and strategies with a lifespan developmental psychopathology perspective. The major focus is on the relationship between mastery of normative psycho-social developmental tasks and mental health. Primary targets for therapy are maladaptive developmental pathways that have significantly disrupted the client’s ability to cope with normal adult tasks and challenges. The book builds on standard cognitive therapy models and techniques, while providing further assessment and therapy strategies to address patterns interfering with resolution of normative adult tasks and roles. It introduces several new developmental assessment and therapy strategies, designed to address client difficulties with normal adult developmental tasks and to identify longstanding maladaptive pathways maintaining these difficulties. The book offers a variety of psycho-social developmental task difficulties in occupational, social, and family functioning. The clinical examples provide a deeper understanding of pathways to competence, as well as pathways to deviance, and the contrast between normal and atypical processes as they emerge at different developmental periods.
