Book Unfinished Canvas An Life Of Koh Seow Chuan

Download or read book Unfinished Canvas An Life Of Koh Seow Chuan written by Tai Ho Woon and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2024-01-12 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Koh Seow Chuan likes to see his life as a continuous painting, and himself as the painter. An Unfinished Canvas is about a unique individual who sees life as just that — a canvas that is never finished. This book traces his remarkable life from the age of four, following his journey as a stamp collector, national swimmer, architect and art collector. In all his endeavours, he reached the very top on a global field. The book makes clear how he lived and continues to live his life guided by two principles, his strong belief in the power of knowledge and the power of teamwork, which he found and followed relatively early in his life. Through stamps, he saw what knowledge could do for him academically and how it would always put him in a position of strength in whatever he did later in life. But it is in his absolute embrace of the power of teamwork that sees him succeeding in project after project. People see in him a leader they rarely see in the world of architecture, the leader who insists on we over I, group glory over personal glory. The architecture firm he founded, DP Architects, is more than 50 years old — and is now one of the biggest in the world. In his 80s now, he reminds us that his canvas is still unfinished.

Power plays pit money, ideals and families against the inner workings of a competitive and closed art world. In his debut fiction, Woon Tai Ho gives us an insider's look into the creative world he knows well. Set in modern-day Singapore, and drifting between worlds, Riot Green tells a gripping tale that draws on rich Chinese traditions and beliefs. It puts the spotlight on the institution of family, the jade of green that is supposed to protect us, but can prove to be a riot of heartaches and secrets. It is a story of ties that bind and those that divide. Like an abstract painting that buffers the obvious, the story unravels deftly to show love and conspiracies, harmony and conflict, chaos and order.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brimming with verve and dramatic incident, Singapore: A Biography offers fresh insights into the life story of this island city-state through the personal experiences of the workers, adventurers, rulers and revolutionaries who have shaped its history over the last seven centuries. The authors, drawing on research undertaken in collaboration with the National Museum of Singapore, have woven together ancient chronicles, eyewitness accounts, oral histories and even modern radio and television broadcasts to create a vivid and compelling narrative that brings the past back to life. Grounded in scholarship yet fired by the imagination, this book reveals the Singapore story to have been as rich, diverse and multilayered as the city-state is prosperous, ordered and successful today.

Book Southeast Asian Personalities of Chinese Descent

Download or read book Southeast Asian Personalities of Chinese Descent written by Leo Suryadinata and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2012 with total page 1611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is a bold project recording the lives of a particular group of Southeast Asians. Most of the people whose biographies are included here have settled down in the ten countries that constitute the region. Each of them has either self-identified as Chinese or is comfortable to be known as someone of Chinese ancestry. There are also those who were born in China or elsewhere who came here to work and do business, including seeking help from others who have ethnic Chinese connections. With the political and economic conditions of the region in a great state of flux for the past two centuries, it is impossible to find consistency in the naming process. Confucius had stressed that correct names make for the best relationships. In this case, Professor Leo Suryadinata has been pursuing for decades the elusive goal of finding the right name to give to the large numbers of people who have, in one way or another, made their homes in, or made some difference to, Southeast Asia. I believe that, when he and his colleagues selected the biographies to be included here, they have taken a big step towards the rectification of identities for many leading personalities. In so doing, he has done us all a great service." - Professor Wang Gungwu, National University of Singapore

Book Japanese Language and Soft Power in Asia

Download or read book Japanese Language and Soft Power in Asia written by Kayoko Hashimoto and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-26 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This cutting edge collection considers how the Japanese language functions as a key element of Japanese soft power in Asia. Within Japanese culture itself, the promotion of language has been an area of ambivalence. This interdisciplinary book looks across the fields of language policy, language teaching, socio-linguistics, cultural studies and history to identify the links between Japan’s language policies and broader social, economic and political processes. It examines the challenges that undermine Japan’s potential soft power by identifying a gap between the “official Japan” portrayed by the Japanese government and the “cultural Japan” that foreigners perceive. It also reveals historical continuity in the way Japanese language is perceived and promoted by policy makers and how the current practices of Japanese language teaching in Asian countries have been shaped within the framework of “international exchange”, which has been a key concept in Japanese foreign policies since the 1970s. It particularly considers the concept of ‘Cool Japan’ as a symbol of Japan’s interpretation of its cultural power and offers a thoughtful assessment of the future of Japanese as a form of soft power in Asia as the country prepares for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andy Warhol bequeathed us the words "Death can really make you look like a star." But death per se is not a catalyst for the relevance of an artist. What is of crucial importance is the proper management structure for the posthumous preservation and development of an artistic estate. The handbook by Loretta Würtenberger presents the possible legal framework, appropriate financing models, as well as the proper handling of the market, museums, and academia. Her business, Fine Art Partners, has advised artists and artists' estates for many years in their structuring and development of estate concepts as well as in operative questions. Based on numerous international examples, the author explains the different alternatives for maintaining an artist's estate and makes recommendations on how to ideally handle work, archives, and mementos following the death of an artist.

Book Reconstructing Identities

Download or read book Reconstructing Identities written by Jürgen Rudolph and published by Ashgate Publishing. This book was released on 1998 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this text is to provide a social history of the Babas in Singapore. It describes and analyzes social, political and cultural aspects of their identities by taking into account the conceptual history of Baba designations from 1819-1994. It argues that defining the Babas is misleading, it is more meaningful to adopt a socio-historical approach that differentiates spaciotemporally-distinct Baba identities. Such an approach is usually avoided not only in research on the Babas, but in many other sociological, anthropological or historical studies. It concludes that there is no such thing as a Baba identity, it has always been in flux and needs to be reconstructed taking seriously the conceptual history. The two crucial turning-points in the history of the Babas, namely the Japanese occupation (1942-1945) and self-rule (1959) led to public emphasis on their culture. Prior emphasis on their former status as a political and economic elite have been hitherto neglected. Taking into account all aspects (legal, political, economic, cultural, linguistic, religious) of Baba identities leads us to a fascinating trajectory of a potential group.
