Book The Paradoxical Rationality of S ren Kierkegaard

Download or read book The Paradoxical Rationality of S ren Kierkegaard written by Richard McCombs and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-04 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard McCombs presents Søren Kierkegaard as an author who deliberately pretended to be irrational in many of his pseudonymous writings in order to provoke his readers to discover the hidden and paradoxical rationality of faith. Focusing on pseudonymous works by Johannes Climacus, McCombs interprets Kierkegaardian rationality as a striving to become a self consistently unified in all its dimensions: thinking, feeling, willing, acting, and communicating. McCombs argues that Kierkegaard's strategy of feigning irrationality is sometimes brilliantly instructive, but also partly misguided. This fresh reading of Kierkegaard addresses an essential problem in the philosophy of religion—the relation between faith and reason.

Book excerpt: Have you experienced loss in your career, finances, or relationships? After twenty-one years as a thriving wife and mother, Holly Ruddock found herself starting over. Her family lost their business, their home, and their cars. Her ministry as a public speaker was buried. All purpose seemed gone. Surrounded by the rubble of an old life, she delved into her broken dreams and found the secret of a servant's heart. She discovered that finding Life in Your Losses started with exactly what she had, nothing. Intimately familiar with life's difficulties, Holly openly describes her emotions of humility and emptiness and shares how those trials became the means to her success, to living the fulfilling life of a giving servant that Christ has called his followers to. Holly gives clear examples of servants in the Bible who gave willingly out of their wreckage and how they found joy through their sacrifice of love. Discover how to finding meaning in loss, purpose in emptiness in Life in Your Losses.

Book The Frankfurt School on Religion

Download or read book The Frankfurt School on Religion written by Eduardo Mendieta and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-07-22 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In "The Frankfurt School on Religion," Eduardo Mendieta has brought together a collection of readings and essays revealing both the deep connections that the Frankfurt School has always maintained with religion as well as the significant contribution that its work has to offer. Rather than being unanimously antagonistic towards religion as has been the received wisdom, this collection shows the great diversity of responses that individual thinkers of the school developed and the seriousness and sophistication with which they engaged the core religious issues and major religious traditions. Through a careful selection of writings from eleven prominent theorists, including several new and previously untranslated pieces from Leo Lowenthal, Max Horkheimer, Herbert Marcuse, and Jurgen Habermas, this volume provides much needed sources for religious leaders, philosophers, and social theorists as they grapple with the nature and functions of religion in the contemporary social, political, and economic landscape. "The Frankfurt School on Religion" recovers the religious dimensions of the Frankfurt School, for too long sidelined or ignored, and offers new perspectives and insights necessary to the development of a fuller and more nuanced critical theory of society. Selections and essays from: Ernst Bloch, Erich Fromm, Leo Lowenthal, Herbert Marcuse, Theodor W. Adorno, Max Horkheimer, Walter Benjamin, Johann Baptist Metz, Jurgen Habermas, Helmut Peukert, Edmund Arens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BLESSED HENRY SUSO COLLECTION [2 BOOKS] — Quality Formatting and Value — Active Index, Multiple Table of Contents for all Books — Multiple Illustrations Henry Suso, O.P. (also called Amandus, a name adopted in his writings, and Heinrich Seuse in German), was a German Dominican friar and the most popular vernacular writer of the fourteenth century (when considering the number of surviving manuscripts). An important author in both Latin and Middle High German, he is also notable for defending Meister Eckhart's legacy after Eckhart was posthumously condemned for heresy in 1329. He died in Ulm on 25 January 1366, and was beatified by the Catholic Church in 1831. Suso was born Heinrich von Berg, a member of the ruling family of Berg. He was born in either the Free imperial city of Überlingen on Lake Constance or nearby Constance, on 21 March 1295, and perhaps on that date up to 1297. Later, out of humility and devotion to his mother, he took her family name, which was Sus (or Süs). At 13 years of age he was admitted to the novitiate of the Dominican Order at their priory in Constance. After completing that year of probation, he advanced to do his preparatory, philosophical, and theological studies there. —BOOKS— A LITTLE BOOK OF ETERNAL WISDOM THE LIFE OF BLESSED HENRY SUSO PUBLISHER: AETERNA PRESS

Book excerpt: Today, racial wounds from three hundred years of slavery and a history of Jim Crow laws continue to impact the church in America. Martin Luther King Jr. captured this reality when he said: “The most segregated hour of Christian America is eleven o’clock on Sunday.” Equipped with the gospel, the evangelical church should be the catalyst for reconciliation, yet it continues to cultivate immense pain and division. Weep with Me by Mark Vroegop is a timely resource that presents lament as a bridge to racial reconciliation in the world today. In the Bible, lament is a prayer that leads to trust, which can be a starting point for the church to “weep with those who weep” (Rom. 12:15). As Vroegop writes: “Reconciliation in the church starts with tears and ends in trust.”

Book Journey into Deep Landscape

Download or read book Journey into Deep Landscape written by Joon Kim and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2023-06-18 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This literary work of non-fiction is based on the author's personal journeys alone. He backpacked to the coasts of the country, across the American continent, to London, England, Paris, France and Schwarzwald, Germany. And also to Andalusia, Spain, and Siberia, Russia. Above all, he cannot forget the simple-hearted pilgrimage to Siberia on the Trans-Siberian Railway. He journeyed alone, sometimes meditating on writing, and sometimes on the journey itself. He saw and felt flamenco through his journey into Andalusia, and stepped on the snow-covered birch forest in Siberia that he longed for. Writing this book, JOURNEY INTO DEEP LANSCAPES, he recalled a few of words of Annie Dillard: “Write about winter in summer. Describe Norway as Ibsen did, from a desk in Italy.” Lastly, he lived at home in seclusion and went on an inner journey with picture books. His long journey, like the flow of a deep river, was the source of inspiration for his writing. In a sense, writing was a kind of journey for him. This creative nonfiction deviates somewhat from the general novel structure. However, the flow of the entire text is consistent and organic. So, whether you may take it as a creative non-fiction or as a collection of f personal essays. It’s up to you.

Download or read book The Wisdom of Kierkegaard written by Soren Kierkegaard and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collected here in one volume are three of Søren Kierkegaard's most important works: Fear and Trembling, Purity of Heart Is to Will One Thing, and Sickness Unto Death. Fear and Trembling: In our time nobody is content to stop with faith but wants to go further. It would perhaps be rash to ask where these people are going, but it is surely a sign of breeding and culture for me to assume that everybody has faith, for otherwise it would be queer for them to be . . . going further. In those old days it was different, then faith was a task for a whole lifetime, because it was assumed that dexterity in faith is not acquired in a few days or weeks. When the tried oldster drew near to his last hour, having fought the good fight and kept the faith, his heart was still young enough not to have forgotten that fear and trembling which chastened the youth, which the man indeed held in check, but which no man quite outgrows. . . except as he might succeed at the earliest opportunity in going further. Where these revered figures arrived, that is the point where everybody in our day begins to go further. Purity of Heart Is to Will One Thing: Father in heaven! What is a man without Thee! What is all that he knows, vast accumulation though it be, but a chipped fragment if he does not know Thee! What is all his striving, could it even encompass a world, but a half-finished work if he does not know Thee: Thee the One, who art one thing and who art all! Sickness Unto Death: Man is spirit. But what is spirit? Spirit is the self. But what is the self? The self is a relation which relates itself to its own self, or it is that in the relation [which accounts for it] that the relation relates itself to its own self; the self is not the relation but [consists in the fact] that the relation relates itself to its own self. Man is a synthesis of the infinite and the finite, of the temporal and the eternal, of freedom and necessity, in short it is a synthesis.

Book Delphi Collected Works of Soren Kierkegaard Illustrated

Download or read book Delphi Collected Works of Soren Kierkegaard Illustrated written by Soren Kierkegaard and published by Delphi Classics. This book was released on 2023-12-03 with total page 4435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nineteenth century Danish philosopher and theologian, Søren Kierkegaard was a major influence on the development of existentialism and Protestant theology. He attacked the literary, philosophical and ecclesiastical establishments of his day for misrepresenting the highest task of human existence—becoming oneself in an ethical and religious sense. His critical works on organised religion, Christianity, morality, ethics and psychology reveal a fondness for metaphor, irony and parables. Many of his philosophical essays deal with how one lives as a “single individual”, giving priority to concrete human reality over abstract thinking, while highlighting the importance of personal choice.
