Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story depicts a novelist who meets a female friend in a small Connecticut shoreline town where they were once childhood sweethearts during their teenage years. Their accidental meeting expands and flourishes into a deep binding love between them, and eventually explodes with many torrid sexual encounters they share with each other. This augmenting love eventually leads to a proposal, marriage, and ends tragically due to an untreatable disease that causes the death of his beloved wife and unborn child. His deep sorrow of the loss of his wife and child slowly evolves into a hardened hatred toward his religion and God, which he angrily denounces and blames as the cause of his losses. He immersed into a deepening void of grief over a period of time which eventually affected his health, and at which point prompted him to give away his vast fortune he had accumulated from the royalties of his published novels and movies which were made from them. Frank Johnson legally bequeathed all of his worldly goods to his wife's family members whom had exhibited kindness and respect to both he and his wife during their courtship. Although Frank refused the offering of a priest to hear his confession as he grew nearer to death, he did manage to make an Act of Contrition with the remaining strength, as he thought he heard his wife call out his name while he sat in a chair in front of a window overlooking the lake and admired the view as he exhaled his last breath and died smiling.

Book Meeting Once More

Download or read book Meeting Once More written by Elise M. Prébin and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2013-05-06 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Thoughtfully written, drawing on her own life experience as well as her anthropological training, Prébin provides us with a new window into the complex world of trans-national adoption. She weaves together kinship, media, and globalization as well as recent Korean history to offer us lessons about today's adoption practices." —Barbara Katz Rothman, author of Weaving A Family: Untangling Race and Adoption A great mobilization began in South Korea in the 1990s: adult transnational adoptees began to return to their birth country and meet for the first time with their birth parents—sometimes in televised encounters which garnered high ratings. What makes the case of South Korea remarkable is the sheer scale of the activity that has taken place around the adult adoptees' return, and by extension the national significance that has been accorded to these family meetings. Informed by the author’s own experience as an adoptee and two years of ethnographic research in Seoul, Meeting Once More sheds light on an understudied aspect of transnational adoption: the impact of adoptees on their birth country, and especially on their birth families. The volume offers a complex and fascinating contribution to the study of new kinship models, migration, and the anthropology of media. Elise Prébin was born in South Korea in 1978, was raised in France, and is now living in New York City with her husband and daughter. In 2006 she obtained her PhD at University of Paris X-Nanterre in social anthropology, was a postdoc and lecturer at Harvard University from 2007 to 2009 and served as Assistant Professor at Hanyang University (South Korea) from 2010 to 2011. She is now an independent scholar.

Book excerpt: Conflict is an inevitable part of life, according to this ancient Chinese classic of strategy, but everything necessary to deal with conflict wisely, honourably, victoriously, is already present within us. Compiled more than two thousand years ago by a mysterious warrior-philosopher, The Art of War is still perhaps the most prestigious and influential book of strategy in the world, as eagerly studied in Asia by modern politicians and executives as it has been by military leaders since ancient times. As a study of the anatomy of organizations in conflict, The Art of War applies to competition and conflict in general, on every level from the interpersonal to the international. Its aim is invincibility, victory without battle, and unassailable strength through understanding the physics, politics, and psychology of conflict.

Book A Dictionary Persian Arabic and English

Download or read book A Dictionary Persian Arabic and English written by Francis Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1852 with total page 848 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dispelling our most cherished myths about work-family balance, Suzanne Venker argues in The Two-Income Trap that women who want to get married and have children will find their home lives less chaotic and far more satisfying by making motherhood, not career, their primary focus. The premise of The Two-Income Trap: Why Parents Are Choosing to Stay Home is that childrearing is no longer recognized for the enormous undertaking it is. Having it all is an impossible goal for anyone, male or female. The needs of children dont allow two married parents the freedom to dedicate themselves fully to something else. Its time to shift our paradigm. There is value in pursuing both work and family; but prioritizing family over career, and being realistic with ones goals, is the only way women can be successful at both. The Two-Income Trap does two things: helps elevates the status of parents at home, and helps mothers who want to be employed create a life that works.

Book The Ekphrastic Encounter in Contemporary British Poetry and Elsewhere

Download or read book The Ekphrastic Encounter in Contemporary British Poetry and Elsewhere written by David Kennedy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining a wide range of ekphrastic poems, David Kennedy argues that contemporary British poets writing out of both mainstream and avant-garde traditions challenge established critical models of ekphrasis with work that is more complex than representational or counter-representational responses to paintings in museums and galleries. Even when the poem appears to be straightforwardly representational, it is often selectively so, producing a 'virtual' work that doesn't exist in actuality. Poets such as Kelvin Corcoran, Peter Hughes, and Gillian Clarke, Kennedy suggests, relish the ekphrastic encounter as one in which word and image become mutually destabilizing. Similarly, other poets engage with the source artwork as a performance that participates in the ethical realm. Showing that the ethical turn in ekphrastic poetry is often powerfully gendered, Kennedy also surveys a range of ekphrastic poets from the Renaissance and nineteenth century to trace a tradition of female ekphrastic poetry that includes Pauline Stainer and Frances Presley. Kennedy concludes with a critique of ekphrastic exercises in creative writing teaching, proposing that ekphrastic writing that takes greater account of performance spectatorship may offer more fruitful models for the classroom than the narrativizing of images.
