Book China s Global Political Economy

Download or read book China s Global Political Economy written by Robert Taylor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-27 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written about China’s economy, as well as its business management system. China's Global Political Economy, however, is designed to bring together these two perspectives, serving to enhance our understanding of China’s growing global role. Examining changes in the management strategies of foreign companies investing in China and Chinese enterprises doing business overseas, this book analyses China’s political economy in the context of the Communist Party’s changing policies. The introductory section begins by studying the aspects of Chinese economic growth as it impacts on domestic social issues and the projection of Chinese power abroad. Within this overall framework, it then goes on to critically assess the effects of foreign investment, business management strategies, human resource management, corporate social responsibility and the financial services sector. Arguing that the encouragement of consumption is a significant objective of the Chinese leadership, the last section is concerned with the importance of the food industry. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of Chinese business, management and international political economy, as well as policymakers and business practitioners.

Book The Value of Agricultural Land

Download or read book The Value of Agricultural Land written by Colin Clark and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Value of Agricultural Land is concerned with the value of agricultural land and covers topics ranging from land rents, transport costs, and land use as well as land prices and agricultural rents. This book has seven chapters; the first of which discusses the principles underlying the value of agricultural land, with emphasis on rent and the views of David Ricardo. The next chapter focuses on Von Thünen’s theory of rents, transport costs, and land use. In particular, it examines Von Thünen’s argument that transport costs were the cause, and rents the consequence, of important differentiations of agricultural, dairy, and forest production, according to distance from the market. The use of production functions and programming to estimate the marginal productivity of land is then explained, along with agricultural rents actually paid in different countries and periods. This book concludes with an analysis of prices of land in relation to ""residual incomes."" Agricultural economists and policymakers will find this book extremely helpful.

Given new global trends towards antiglobalisation, FOCAC's importance is expected to increase in the years ahead. This book seeks to strengthen the China-Africa relationship and offer new suggestions for both policy makers and scholars seeking to understand and advance FOCAC for mutual benefit. Book Land Tenure and Natural Resource Management

Download or read book Land Tenure and Natural Resource Management written by Keijiro Otsuka and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2001-08-14 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The devastating environmental effects of deforestation and the exploitation of other natural resources in the developing world have been well documented, yet their impact on local communities has received far less attention. This volume fills this gap by looking at how land degradation and deforestation are being addressed at the local level, where households have experienced the reduction of farm size and the decline of natural resources. Through a comparison of Asia and Africa, Land Tenure and Natural Resource Management examines the evolution of land tenure institutions within diverse cultural, natural, and policy environments. Specific topics include the evolution of customary land tenure, the impacts of land tenure policies, and common property management. The editors conclude that the best strategy for managing land and forest resources lies in promoting the establishment of property rights and investment in the improvement of the natural resource base. Topics Include: Issues and Theoretical Framework; Quantitative Methodology; Agroforestry Management in Ghana; Agroforestry Management in Sumatra; Tree and Cropland Management in Malawi; Customary and Private Land Management in Uganda; Management of State Land and Privatization in Vietnam; Common Property Forest Management in the Hill Region of Nepal; Timber Forest Management in Nepal and Japan Toward New Paradigms of Land and Tree Resource Management.

Book Global Land Grabs

Download or read book Global Land Grabs written by Marc Edelman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 2008 world food crisis a surge of land grabbing swept Africa, Asia and Latin America and even some regions of Europe and North America. Investors have uprooted rural communities for massive agricultural, biofuels, mining, industrial and urbanisation projects. ‘Water grabbing’ and ‘green grabbing’ have further exacerbated social tensions. Early analyses of land grabbing focused on foreign actors, the biofuels boom and Africa, and pointed to catastrophic consequences for the rural poor. Subsequently scholars carried out local case studies in diverse world regions. The contributors to this volume advance the discussion to a new stage, critically scrutinizing alarmist claims of the first wave of research, probing the historical antecedents of today’s land grabbing, examining large-scale land acquisitions in light of international human rights and investment law, and considering anew longstanding questions in agrarian political economy about forms of dispossession and accumulation and grassroots resistance. Readers of this collection will learn about the impacts of land and water grabbing; the relevance of key theorists, including Marx, Polanyi and Harvey; the realities of China’s involvement in Africa; how contemporary land grabbing differs from earlier plantation agriculture; and how social movements—and rural people in general—are responding to this new threat. This book was published as a special issue of Third World Quarterly.

Download or read book China written by Gungwu Wang and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China has achieved significant socio-economic progress and has become a key player on the international stage after several decades of open-door and reform policy. Looking beyond China's transformation, this book focusses on the theme of governance which is widely regarded as the next most critical element to ensure that China's growth remains sustainable.Today, China is confronted with a host of pressing challenges that call for urgent attention. These include the need to rebalance and restructure the economy, the widening income gaps, the poor integration of migrant populations in the urban areas, insufficient public housing and healthcare coverage, the seeming lack of political reforms and the degree of environmental degradation. In the foreign policy arena, China is likewise under pressure to do more to address global concerns while not appearing to be overly aggressive. The next steps that China takes would have a great deal to do with governance, in terms of how it tackles or fails to address the myriad of challenges, both domestic and foreign.China: Development and Governance, with 57 short chapters in total, is based on up-to-date scholarly research written in a readable and concise style. Besides China's domestic developments, it also covers China's external relations with the United States, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. Non-specialists, in particular, should find this volume accessible and useful in keeping up with fast-changing developments in East Asia.

Book Modern Chinese Real Estate Law

It describes how the market functions, which laws are applicable and how they are applied, and how a nation can achieve dramatic economic growth so rapidly while its legal system is so unsettled. The book demonstrates how China is drawing on the world for ideas while retaining a domestic system that remains essentially Chinese, and how the recent revitalization of China's real estate market has confounded the predictions of many developments economists.

Book Financial Stability Issues The Case of East Asia

Download or read book Financial Stability Issues The Case of East Asia written by Mamiko Yokoi-Arai and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2002-07-08 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whatever can be said about the financial crises that have plagued East Asian countries since the early 1990s, it must be averred that they teach us a great deal. Many earlier assumptions about finance and investment have been called into question, and the field is more open than it has been in many decades to legal and economic analysis and theory. In particular, issues of financial sector reform have come into sharp focus. Here is a new proposal, solidly grounded in current reality, for a regional "zone of law" designed to supplement and benefit domestic reforms under way in Japan and the three emerging economies of Indonesia, South Korea, and Thailand. The author draws on a wide range of relevant material, including exploration of international standards and "best practices" in banking and finance, the experience of the U.S. and the U.K. in planning and implementing reform measures, and the theoretical literature respecting financial crises and what causes them. In this context, the specific reforms applied in the four Asian countries under consideration are discussed in detail, with "lessons to be learned" about crisis detection, containment, and prevention. During the course of the analysis, the author reveals fundamental policy areas where meaningful and effective reform can take place. Financial Stability Issues: The Case of East Asia offers numerous practical applications at the same time as it strikes a rich vein of theory in the field. Its fresh, sensible approach will be greatly appreciated, not only by academic theorists, but by hardheaded business people, policymakers, and regulators as well.
