Book excerpt: Textual, photographic and satellite image information is provided for each site depicted in the atlas. The details of a site's incription into the World Heritage's list are given, along with a brief description by the cultural or natural values for which the site was inscribed. The threats of the site are then described, followed by a brief explanation what is discernible in the satellite imagery that was selected for each site. The 'stories' told in the satellite imagery provide numerous examples of the utility of satellite imagery analysis for World Heritage site management. In certain cases, the main threats that place a World Heritage site in danger are not identifiable in the satellite imagery. In these cases, we have selected imagery which provides an improvement in the general understanding of that site.

Book ATLAS of Tadrart Acacus rock art A UNESCO World Heritage site in southwestern Libya

Download or read book ATLAS of Tadrart Acacus rock art A UNESCO World Heritage site in southwestern Libya written by Savino di Lernia and published by All’Insegna del Giglio. This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 1026 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rock art sites of the Tadrart Acacus in southwestern Libya were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985, largely owing to the activities started in 1955 by Fabrizio Mori, founder of the Libyan-Italian Mission in the Tadrart Acacus and Messak. Since the beginning, the Department of Antiquities of Tripoli and Sebha, Libya, and Sapienza University of Rome, Italy, have worked in the region nearly without interruption until 2011. This book presents the archive of the rock art sites, identified and recorded by the Italian Mission and by independent scholars, as described and critically assessed by the authors within the framework of the ASArt-DATA project (the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme). The contributions introducing the catalogue contextualize the environmental, archaeological, and cultural aspects of the engravings and paintings. They include chapters addressing the historical, cultural, and diplomatic issues involved in the long-term bilateral scientific cooperation.

Book UNESCO Cultural Heritage and Outstanding Universal Value

Download or read book UNESCO Cultural Heritage and Outstanding Universal Value written by Sophia Labadi and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the international legal framework developed by UNESCO to identify and protect world heritage and its implementation at the national level. Drawing on close policy analysis of UNESCO's major documents, extensive professional experience at UNESCO, as well as in-depth analyses of case studies from Asia, Europe, and Latin America, Sophia Labadi offers a nuanced discussion of the constitutive role of national understandings of a universalist framework. The discussion departs from considerations of the World Heritage Convention as Eurocentric and offers a more complex analysis of how official narratives relating to non-European and non-traditional heritage mark a subversion of a dominant and canonical European representation of heritage. It engages simultaneously with a diversity of discourses across the humanities and social sciences and with related theories pertaining not only to tangible and intangible heritage, conservation, and archaeology but also political science, social theory, tourism and development studies, economics, cultural, and gender studies. In doing so, it provides a critical review of many key concepts, including tourism, development, sustainability, intangible heritage, and authenticity.
